Quick question on the proper rear cavallino. On my 86 TR I have a shiny silver cavallino and on the 87 i is a flat black. I know the flat black is correct on the 87 since the judges had no issue with FCA international meet concours. Should the 86 be flat black and flat like the picture below or could the silver be correct? I sure hope the shiny is right because it sure looks better.

    TRs had flat black.

The shinny silver was for the 512tr.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was afraid of that. Now I need to find one at a reasonable price. Let me know if anyone has one.

The flat black is correct for your 86, somewhere in the 1990 production they changed to sculptured black so you may see 1990 cars with flat or sculptured but should be black. Then chromed for the 512TR.

So the chrome one I have on my 85 TR was added? Hmm...I tought it was original... Why would the previous owner do that? Stolen original? Bling taste?...I kind of like my bling horsy, anyway! :D
But can someone find a black one?

They're difficult to find, but once in a while one pops up on eBay. The one from the picture you posted has been for sale for a long time, a little expensive to my taste. I ended up finding one much cheaper and in perfect condition but you have be patient.

Yes, the switch from flat black to sculpted black occurred around June time in 1990. We found May TRs with sculpted and July TRs with flat ones, probably finishing flat cavallino boxes here and there on the assembly line.

We agree, and would not change it! ;)

Have you checked with Black-Barts? I'd guess that their 110mm "black" is more like the sculpted black 90/91, but maybe they know something:

    Page Title

Is that photo you posted a known truly original early example or a what's-now-officially-supplied piece? -- it looks a little too "water-jet" cutout and CNC milled to me, but I'm no expert, and maybe the supplier was authorized to modernize.

It says original in the add but I haven't compared the one I have to it. $384 is expensive for that in my opinion. As long as I only take one car to a concours I guess I can always switch them. LOL

Guys, it is an original one. I've seen many and this one is right.

I had a chromed cavalino on my TR when I bought it and never liked it, it distracts from the width of the car and focuses the eye's attention in the middle instead of scanning that stunning rear design (look at the photoshop comparison below I did back then). Pininfarina made it black for a reason, and I personally think they got it right, but I can understand the "chromed" opinion. It just looks wider and meaner with the black cavalino.

Since the flat black cavalino is very difficult to find, I ordered one at Black-Barts. The details looked good, but compared to the original 512TR chromed one I had, you could see plenty of differences that in end felt wrong. That's why I hunted down a flat one, much better looking I think. So the black-barts one is a good option, but not the ultimate one.
