My girlfriend's father was just promoted to 4-Star Admiral taking over the entire US Navy Fleet Forces Command; quite the accomplishment! I know he likes to drink Manhattan cocktails which typically use rye whisky, but I bought him a bottle of Blanton's bourbon as a small Congratulations/Christmas gift. I'm not a whiskey expert, did I do ok or did I just embarrass myself?

Blantons is good stuff, very highly regarded. It's one of my favorites. Well done.

Agreed with Mark, Blanton's is good.

If he drinks Manhattans for a future gift I recommend Russell's Reserve Rye and Tillen Farms Bada Bing cherries. Both easy to find.

I had Russell's Reserve Rye in hand and switched for the Blanton's because I had no idea what I was doing and it seemed to have a nicer presentation. Thanks for the advice!

Blanton's is good bourbon, even for seasoned bourbon drinkers. I say well done.

    Good gift.

Now go find the "do I ask her father's permission to marry her" thread.

The Russell's Reserve makes the best Manhattan's. I use 2 shots of it poured over ice with 1 shot of sweet vermouth, a few shakes of Angostura bitters, a couple shakes of cherry bitters, stir and strain into a chilled Martini glass with a couple of the Bada Bing cherries.

Get him a bottle of Jeffersons "Ocean" if you can find it, its an amazing bourbon. It is barrelled and sent around the equator aging!! Wonderful
