Tire Replacement schedule

I would guess 10k to 20k based on how many track days...

What tires are you using that they wear down after as little as 10k miles? Are you tracking it much? What 355 do you have?

Most owners replace based on time because they don't drive enough to wear through them in 4-6 years.

 

If you're driving 10k miles a year mostly at speed then I'd consider that very good rear tire life. Are you running really sticky tires, or normal high-po tires? Track days or spirited cruising?

 

You should be replacing your tyres long before they're down to slicks! (I'm hoping your "Wires sticking out" comment was just a euphemism to describe how much you wear them down).

Once the tyres get below 3mm of tread then they start becoming increasingly less efficient due to the lack of tread.

Once they get down below 1mm then they start to become dangerous as their grip levels a reduced by a massive amount.

Road tyres are not designed to work without any tread on them like a true racing slick tyre is.

It's your car so do what you like but bear in My that if you're ever involved in an accident where someone is injured (or God forbid - killed), you'll be deemed to have been criminally negligent in driving an un-roadworthy vehicle - Which could end up costing you a lot more than a set of tyres!

I'm hoping that you're not in the UK on your worn out tyres as that greatly reduces the chances of Me ever being on the same roads as you are!

I have my suspension setup so that both ends of the car become slick within 100 miles of each other. The tires loose the inside tread at the same point as loosing the outside tread.

I generally get 10K miles and 10 track days on a set of tires.

You asked for an opinion....
I'm changing my tires this winter and my tread depth is 5/32 at the rear but
the grip is gone (micheline pilots) due to the tires age.
For me, its all about cornering.

If your planning to drive the car as these cars were meant to be
driven then saftety should be your first priority....for both you,
your passenger and others on the road.

 

If your post is not serious then make it more obvious! (Try smileys for a start off! ).

There are plenty of people around who already (incorrectly) believe that it's okay to run road tyres down to slicks because they think as there's more rubber in contact with the road, then there's going to be more grip, completely failing to understand how road tyres function.

Tyre wear is not a linear process throughout the life of the tyre. Once tyres get to around 3mm the wear rates start to increase exponentially, and by the time there's only @ 1.5mm of tread left on the tyre the grip levels are reduced to such an extent that they can almost double a cars stopping distance in an emergency compared to the same car on tyres with the full amount of tread left on them.

You might be happy to give people the impression that it's fine to run road tyres down to slicks, but as it's a major matter of safety, not just for the driver of the vehicle with the worn tyres but also for those on the roads around them, I'd rather give the genuine information required to keep people safe, especially on the internet where people believe just about everything they read on it!

Fchat has a reputation for being a trust worthy site that carries information from people who know what they are talking about and I'd hate to see it's reputation get tarnished by people posting "Fast and the Furious" type b:censored:ks about running tyres down to slicks!

 

If this were true, then why are my lap times 1 second better when the tires are almost slick (and I mean less than 2mm of tread) ???

 

Tire tread is only for rain. Something to keep in mind.

 

When you ask for peoples opinions you have to be willing to take them or when you ask questions again not many will be looking to help.

I'm not so sure this is true, in harder compound rubber of street tires the tread actually makes a good portion of your traction letting the harder rubber flex. yes it channels water out from under the tire but that is no where near it's only porpuse.

 

I find it hard to stop laughing when I read this.

In any case, I'm sure some here have gotten more than 15k miles out of a set of rear tires but they were driven a lot of highway miles and had a harder compound than you are using.
