Guy wants my 1989 328 GTB

Personally I myself would hang on to it. These cars have nowhere to go than up. They are finally at the age to be viewed as a classic by serious collectors, not just a used ferrari. GTB's in the US are a very rare car. As 3x8's begin to to noticed more and more by serious collectors they to will begin to know how few their really are. They are the last of the true hand built Ferrari's before they started to have a much more modern look. I think nice examples will appreciate at a steady pace from this point on. Generally history repeats it self so if look at any Ferrari before the 3x8's it should help indicate what will likely happen with these car. It's only my opinion and nothing in life is a sure thing but I feel confident enough to write this. Best of luck with what ever your decision may be.

 

An 89 GTB in red/tan is one of the highest valued premium 3x8 there is. I would not sell for less than $125k based on what people are looking for and the reason people are paying a premium right now. They are hoping these premium ones end up being $300-400k cars which I feel they will eventually. That being said I would keep it and enjoy it if you still do. I probably wouldn't even sell my 89 GTS for that as I love it too much.

I know I am nitpicking here, but :
- There were 249 “série 2” 328 GTB built between January 1st, 1989 and end of the 328 production in September 1989, the last 328 GTB built being 83017.
- Should we talk about the “Model year 1989”, which, I believe, began in September 1988 in the USA, the number of 328 GTB produced for the “model year” 1989 on all world markets is “about 335” .
- Should we consider all the 328 GTB with revised suspension and bulged wheels (= the “série 2” cars) produced, this from the first one which is 76626 build in February 1988, I have been told once that the total is 543 for all markets BUT I have never been able to confirm this firmly with a written source or a cross-reference, so this should only be considered as a ballpark, not a number carved in stone (yet?).

Have you followed the Hagerty price guides lately? They lag the market a bit, but they show the 89 328GTB being one of the hottest cars over the past year, nearly doubling in value. As others posted, while the increase over the next year might not continue at the same rate, everyone expects the 328s to continue to climb - the next year or two will likely show significant increases. Hang on to it!

I'd keep it, unless you aren't using it.

I get occasional offers on my Speedster, but it would be hard to replace with a car that I know is solid and sorted. Probably what I miss about my 328 (versus new 308) is that I had that car sorted, and now have to go through another old car to make sure everything is tight.

 

Just shooting from the hip, the market ask for your car is anywhere from $80,000 to $120,000.

My sense is 328 will settle around $100,000 or so. But based on the last eight years, values on all collector cars will continue to rise. This is a fine time to sell even if values continue to rise.

But if you aren't really in the market to sell, why ask for the market amount? If someone wants your car they should have have to work for it. What is the car worth to you?

In order for someone to buy my '87 328 GTB they would have to pay a lot of money. Like maybe $160,000 (the going price for a CS). Sorry if that blows people away.

Now, if I was to truly put my car on the market I would list it around $120,000 and see what action I got.

BTW I don't think there are any 328 GTB on the US market at this point in time.

Not sure it would hit that high of a number but it should fetch more than the 125kmark, and 200k for a 328gtb is very possible for sure.

Assuming the miles on this car at 47,000 miles is most likely a good driver, I agree with others that 125 is a GOOD number, I would try at 135 to start and see what he says, all he can say is no, so start at 135 and see if he flinches.

If you are saying "I don't want to sell my car but if someone offers me 125k, I'll sell it, fine. But if you are thinking 125k is a price that someone in the USA will pay for the car OTHER than an extremely low mileage garage queen, you're dreaming.

Hey, don't take my opinion - put one up for sale at that price and see what happens.

 

Why not, M.Brandon Motorcars recently just sold a 1988GTB with approximately 32,000miles, with an asking price $99,000.

 

Furmano, as you know, we have the same car, 1987 328 GTB. Mine has 25,200 miles, and is a fully - sorted red/tan example. I almost sold it a couple weeks ago for $80k, then i caught myself and stopped the transaction. People caught wind on here that i might be selling and were contacting me.
I'm currently in Italy on a trip with family, thinking it over. If i do choose to sell the car, it most certainly won't be for $80k. I'm desiring a 360 right now, and my initial thought was to cash out the 328 for 360 and have cash left over. At this point i may just keep the 328 and buy a 360. I'll store the 328 as investment.
If someone wants my red/tan GTB, it would have to a healthy six-figure offer. And i may still not sell, not just yet.

An asking price is, as we have all agreed innumerable times, just that. It's the SELLING price that matters.

As has been discussed over and over…If you are actively trying to SELL something, the price needs to be competitive/be seen as reasonable or there will be no buyers.

Frankly, I think all this price discussion stuff belongs in some other forum. Leave this one to technical subjects re these cars. YEAH, like THAT will happen!

As a dealer (mentioned above in this thread), all I can say is that I'm a buyer for your 89 328 GTB.

I personally own an 89 328 GTB as well, and I have had multiple unsolicited offers for the car, all of which I have turned down. I'm taking it to Cavallino in a couple of weeks to be judged, and it's most definitely not for sale, at least not at this time.

 

I bet you a dollar that mbrandon will tell you that the sale price was if not on the money, was very close. your implication is that the asking price and transactional price show a huge or at least significant delta. I highly doubt that.

 

Well, we'll see when it sells. Speculation is meaningless - when it sells and the selling price is accurately reported, we'll know what it sold for!

I figure it's a win/win for me. Either I'm right and the car doesn't sell for anywhere near that price or I'm wrong which means my 89 328 is worth a lot more than I paid for it.

 

I have it on good authority that the mbrandonmotorcars 328 GTB sold for close to asking. Can say no more.

 

I will be at Cavallino as well next week, and look forward to seeing your 89 GTB.
