When I started looking a year ago I was shocked a bit by how quick cars were selling. Some that I was chasing were gone a couple days after listed. 1 was sold within hours. I was able to get mine because I stated making the deal before the dealer had even received it. At the time I felt that I was being a bit hasty, but I haven't seen a better deal since then to make me regret the rush.
Thats what I did I called the seller and asked what it would cost to pull the car off their site. Agreed on a price, sent a paypal deposit and wired the funds that afternoon. The dealers have it made when everybody wants something they have. Some even won't honor you doing a PPI and say "if we get a written deal while the car is getting a PPI we will sell it" therefore no car and out $400+ on a wasted PPI
Are 308s showing up at the national top concours in the country (Pebble, Amelia, etc.)? I know with P-cars they couldn't be bothered several years ago and then the 356s started showing up and the Porsche family got involved. I think that may have offered some clout to the rising prices. Just wondering if this is happening to the 3X8 line at all. They are a bit newer than the 356, but the 911s are showing up too... Just a thought... Franny
Short (bit) off-topic: I read the term PPI a lot, I only find info on that abbreviation for stomach pain inhibitors and some sort of retirement-program.. Though I'm European I'd like to know, might come in handy one day, thanks ! Emile
"stomach pain inhibitors" is actually pretty close ...or should be... PPI - Pre Purchase Inspection... If that helps... I like yours better though...
A proper Pre Purchase Inspection may prevent later stomach pains and ensure a troublefree car for a great retirement -so in a way it makes sense. H
One thing this thread has made me realize is - finally - doing that 3.5L rebuild on my 84 no longer doesn't make economic sense, if that makes sense. Not that I ever plan to sell the car in the first place. It is just nice to know that even after that expense, I am still way in the black.
I can't believe you have waited this long. It's an incredible difference!!! I just had Carobu perform more updates. Dyno results to follow soon.
The empirical approach is usually the best. It's also tough to make generalizations when every car this old is unique. Commodity market rules don't strictly apply.
Couldn't agree more. A dealer I spoke to on the phone in June told me that they had a 1976 gtb just come in but refused to take a deposit. He did agree though to give me first refusal if I was at his showroom at 10am when they opened. Well I was there at 9.30 waiting patiently. His attitude was that's the price, take it or leave it. After we agreed the deal he showed me on their computers that even though the car had been online for a few hours they had over 20 enquiries. As the saying goes.. You snooze you lose Paul
Finally, 308 buyers can be treated as badly as new Ferrari buyers! We've waited years to be abused like this. So cool...
Don't be so flippant about it. The first variants of many cars become more valuable than their successors once they transition from used car to collector status, since they are the more pure to the original concept, regardless of whether or not their driving performance is inferior. There are many examples of this. It is very likely that this will happen for the 3X8s as well.
I think you need to man up and sell your car for 22k on eBay and do the community the same service as you have the last 7yrs claiming the 308 isn't worth more than 25k
Funny thing is I doubt I could get much more than 22K for my car - it has nearly 116,000 miles on it. People will run away from that like it has ebola
I could actually see this happening (yes I'm in Colorado but not smoking anything at the moment), although I don't know about it being very likely. I do find myself looking at photos of those 308 manual heater levers, etc. and liking them at lot.
I've waited since 2008 to bust your stones HARD about this day And still you cant Give me the props you a$$ LOL
You mean this isn't a joke? The most significant factor in price appreciation is when the supply outstrips the demand. You have to run out of sellers before buyers to make the price increase. With production volumes of 12,000 308s and 7,000 328s it isn't likely that the values would reverse.
But that's based on the very limited number of glass 308s vs. other 308s. I wish I could get my car out past the ice and snow and get in a good drive. I need to clear my head of all this talk of values and bubbles and remember why I bought the car in the first place!
