How Many 328s are left?

Alright, we all know the number of 328s produced between 1985 and 1989 (see below).

328 GTS: Total production: 6,068, 542 RHD (292 ABS)
328 GTB: Total production: 1,344, 130 RHD (53 ABS)

How many do you think are actually left in running order? i was looking at pictures of wrecked 328's was able to find pages and pages of them. Many flooded as well.

 

Another question is why aren't they being restored at the same rate as the 308s?

 

Good questions. My guess:
30% trashed/flooded
30% 'dogs' - modified, not well cared for, etc.
That leaves 40% nice cars 86-89
If you're looking for a 88.5 or 89 in great condition, I'd say they are becoming a rare commodity.

 

Ah yes, the "I want them to be rare so I have invented figures to prove it" method!

Heck, maybe it will work and raise the value of my '89!

Well, they are newer for one thing but what data do you have to show that they aren't being restored at the same rate?

 

most 89's I came across had low mileage and in mint condition, little restoration needed, how many '89 ABS models are there and how many LHD / RHD's ?

Well, my "guesstimate" would be "about 90 per cent still alive, most in good shape, almost none modified".
As said before, no-one, to the best of my knowledge, has a complete list of the 7413 328 produced (don't forget the factory build cabriolet...) but slightly more than 5000 have been identified by châssis number so far, almost all in running order, and very, very, very few modified. "new" châssis numbers are coming to light every day, always from cars in healthy state.
For some reasons, and in marked contrast to its successor the 348, most 328 survive today, unmodified, and in running order.

Factory figures are:
249 GTB produced (NOT "89 model year") from January 1st, 1989 to the end of production (sept 1989) and 1089 GTS.

I have been told once, but so far have NOT been able to cross-check This, That there were exactly 543 GTBs with the revised suspension (bulged wheels).
There COULD be about 2450 GTS with bulged wheels.

Sorry, but if You remember That ABS was an OPTION everywhere but in the USA...I don't have access to the list of options by châssis numbers!

 

The figures of 542 (of which, 292 with ABS) GTS and 130 (of which 53 with ABS) came from Maranello Concessionaires in the UK and are, to the best of m'y knowledge, only for the United Kingdom market.

There were others RHD cars produced, at least 152 RHD GTSs for Australia, which did not receive any GTB rhd new from the factory.

There could have been others RHD cars produced new for other RHD countries, although That, contrary to what would seem to be logical, all 328 built new for Japan are LEFT hand drive.

But if this is just for fun I will take a stab.

First of all either my internet skills are not up to par or there really are not pages and pages of crashed 328s. What I do see are multiple pics of the same car from different angles.

My Logic

1986-1989 most coveted so only a major frame damage/fire would count one out, even then you would probably encounter several salvage cars with unsafe frames limping along.


1990-2000 Still desirable but last years model depreciation continuing now.
Small percentage tucked away in collectors cellophane collections less on the road being driven


2001-2012 Major accidents, neglected, sat never ran, varmits building homes inside, cars with deferred maintenance that owners ran into the ground.

All these trigger the part out reflex.

This is the time period where I would guess that most 328’s died. Perceived value is much lower. Parts to repair/restore them exceed the appraised value car.


2013-present value increase enough for most repair


So my wild ass guess would be a fairly constant 1% attrition rate per year from 1985-2000.
With 2001-2012 having a 1.5% - 2% for the reasons above.



So a 32% to 38% culling from the original population

But then again, I could be wrong

 

I love cynisism! It always sparks interesting discussion. I did not invent these numbers - as stated, t's simply a guess. Secondly, facts are facts. The 88.5's and 89's were produced in lesser numbers (not invented) and have suspension upgrades. If that affects the value, so be it.

 

I think your number is high but of the 5000+ we know of a number of them have been totaled or parted out. Some make their way back to be operational. It is a moving target and really impossible to know for sure.

I also suspect that a substantial percentage of the 30% or so of production we have no records of are gone.

There are around 130 known US 328 GTB. I'm sure there are some more out there but after tracking them for about six years, it's pretty rare to find cars that are not on the list.

US type, registered in the USA.

I know of one or two US 328 GTB registered in Europe and I know of one or two Euro 328 GTB registered in the US.

But as far as US type registered in the US, there are about 130 that I have identified. I am sure there are a few more out there but they have remained hidden over the years.

In these post some of us are talking worldwide and some of us are talking North America (USA and Canada) numbers.

Ferrari I believe shipped far less than half to North America



The new thing we may have to be aware of is erosion of North American stock to Europe until prices balance out more.

It now may be more economical to buy a North American 328 and have it shipped to Europe than to purchase one there.

 

The 328 was released when ferrari values went nuts in the late '80's, which was the first time that really happened and put the car as collector item in everyone's head. Thus they never became just old cars like previous models,they were always a potentially collectible ferrari and did not get driven into the ground like prior models. Even the high mileage cars are kept in good shape. Ferrari also made a large step in rust prevention in that era, so both combined you see a much higher survival rate and many less cars needing restoration compared to prior Ferraris, since very few were treated as 'used cars.'

The 328's and testarossa were the first cars that got stashed with just delivery miles in that whole collector craze, but it permanently shifted everyone's mindset when it came to care, mileage, etc.

 

Like all figures, I am again repeating myself here, but:
During the eighties, Ferrari shipped "about 28 per cent" of its production to the United States; slightly more for some models, slightly less for others.
So the US got about 2000 to 2200 GTS (and about 130 GTB)
The US 328s are relatively well known, There are not many unknown cars here; other markets are much more difficult as for information.
There are already a number of US GTSs in Europe, I would say "about 150 to 200"; and two GTBs identified so far.

The difference is that I am simply taking a stab to answer the question with no alterior motive. Just enjoying being part of the discussion.

 

Very good point! Maybe this is why we are seeing some low mileage cars coming into the market place as of late.
