Hello everyone. Hope all is well. My name is Freddy and this is my first time in a Ferrari Forum. I am an avid car nut and have owned mostly German and Japanese cars in my life and was previously a line mechanic working at several BMW and Honda dealerships. I currently work at an Exotic car dealership in NYC that sells/service all his end Marques.

My question is as follows: I am contemplating on purchasing either a 360 Modena or possibly a 550 Maranello as my first Ferrari. What I wanted to know was since I am fairly confident that I can perform almost all, if not most of the maintenance work myself, and have full access to my shop and equipment, would doing so de-value the car in the long run? Or am I pretty much forced to do everything at the dealer in order to preserve the records of the car. I am obviously not oblivious to the fact that you must pay to play but it just kills me that I will be paying ridiculous money to have someone else do what I can on my own.

    Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

You could keep records of all the parts you buy for the maintenance, and then document your work. Some may subtract some compared to a dealer or independent specialist maintained car, but I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you are qualified to work on it - a future buyer should be able to get a PPI to verify condition and quality of work. It isn't a gold mine anyway, but rather a depreciating asset. Having said that, everything else being equal, a future buyer will likely be more comfortable with a dealer or independent specialist maintained car...

Keep good records like an aircraft mechanic and you are all set. If you are going to do your own majors it might be a good idea to also take photos. Some of the well regarded indys do this.

I agree with all of the above. I just bought my first Ferrari a few months ago and although the seller did not take his car to the dealership, he did have records of all the services performed by independents (Major Service), and all the receipts of do-it-yourself oil changes etc.

I agree with what everyone said. Just keep all records, receipts and take good photos to document everything and you should be good.

+1. So, to the OP, you're saying that you'll have free access to the SD computers needed to perform some of the more "advanced" maintenance/repair operations? If so, that's pretty sweet.

There are two types of Ferrari buyers. One wants a pristine car with work only done by a certified dealership and less than 5,000 miles on the car. If there is a scuff on the leather or the paint has a chip in it... Deal's Off! They pay absolute top value for the car and then are too scared to drive it because it will loose value or get dinged in a parking lot. ;)

The second buyer isn't as particular and will pay a lower price for a car with some miles that has actually been driven. Some evidence that the car was loved and taken care of will be demanded. As above records in some level that correlates with condition and you'll be fine. Some "big things" like belts and clutches you might want to bring in to have the shop name on the repair. e.g. the only criteria when I bought mine was "does it run?".. but I'd still be leery of some guy doing the belts in his garage. Photos wouldn't mean squat to me.

Thank you for the feeback guys. I really do appreciate it. I intended on keeping records and receipts on every part that I purchase anyways as I also own an E30 M3 and for those of you who know that is a collector car whose value is on a steady rise and documentation is a critical part of preserving its value.

On another note do you guys have any recommendation on a reputable independant mechanic who is trusted with Fcars in the NYC area?

    IDRIVEM5,

Yes I can have access to SD computers as I am friendly with a few techs at a Ferrari Dealer, but is about 50 miles away from where I live though!

Ooh, share a pic of the E30? When I lived in the UK I had a black E30 M3 (LHD, interesting to say the least) and an Alpina B6 3.5S which was an E30 M3 with a 535 engine.

I would check out the following:

    Tommy @P1 Motorcars
    203-276-0749
    65 Halloween Boulevard
    Stamford CT 06902

    Vinny @AutoElite
    1 Atwood Ave
    Tenafly, NJ
    204-947-2371

As to the records I agree with everyone else and I think you will see if your car has low miles and has excellent documentation even if its done by you so long as you are a good mechanic and the car is in great shape you might find some of those really picky level 1 buyers come your way too.
