Considering the cars they've produced last few seasons I'm surprised that guy has held onto his job as TD.

Renault confirmed they have already used most of their tokens.

 

So, if they are not a match for last years Merc, right out of the box, they are pretty much toast.

But that raises a question in my mind about tokens and homologation.

If the table in the appendix to the regs says that a team can use a token to change the compressor (or whatever part), is the token deemed used when the change is made or when the PU is submitted for homologation?

Can a team use a different compressor at every race until it is homologated?

Obviously a team could have tried several different compressor designs during the off season, and those would only count as one change when the PU was submitted for homologation. But that was when PUs had to be homologated by the first race. Now that there is no date certain by which a team must submit for homologation, shouldn't teams be able to make as many changes as they like right up to homologation, at which time the changes are recorded, tokens are counted and the PU is homologated.

I wonder if the contracts with teams would require the PU makers to provide unhomologated updates to all teams or merely the homologated PU.

 

My guess would be the packaging is much tighter. More coke bottle maybe? Hope the Honda doesn't overheat everything like the Cans in testing last year.....

Good question! A conundrum indeed..... We know they're only allowed to homolgate one design each, but seems they're free to do whatever (within the 32 token allowance) until they choose to give a reference unit to the FIA.

This also begs the question of can they run different specs until they homologate? Are we going to see 'works' units for 'preferred' teams with the others running older units? Or must any changes be on all units?

A mess for sure....

Renault has completed a "fundamental" overhaul of its Formula 1 engine for the 2015 season in a bid to help Red Bull close the gap to Mercedes.

Ahead of the first pre-season test at Jerez this weekend, Renault has revealed details of the extent of its changes.

Renault managing director Cyril Abiteboul said: "We knew what we had to do over the winter and we know what we have achieved.

"We believe we have made a very big step in performance and will be more reliable.

"We do not know where the others will be: we may not have erased all the gaps, but we are confident that we have gone a long way to making up the deficit of last season."

DEVELOPMENT TOKENS USED

Engine manufacturers are allowed to change up to 48 per cent of their power unit for this season, with modifications allowed at any point over the campaign.

Renault says for the first race it has used the majority of the 32 development tokens that it has available, but will save some for updates later in the campaign.

Chief technical officer Rob White (pictured) said: "We have made some fundamental changes to gain performance and reliability. We have upgraded every system and subsystem, with items that will give the most performance prioritised.

"The principal changes involve the internal combustion engine, turbocharger and battery.

"The ICE will have a new combustion chamber, exhaust system concept and variable trumpets, as permitted by the 2015 regulations.

"The compressor is more efficient, while the energy recovery systems are able to deal with more severe usage.

"The 2014 unit was already well placed in its centre of gravity; however we have tidied up the packaging to give greater ease of integration into the chassis.

"Additionally many systems and functions have been rationalised and simplified to further ease the task.

"In short, there are very few carry-over pieces between the 2014 and 2015 power units."

Head of trackside operations Remi Taffin added: "We won't go into specifics about each and every part we have changed, but we will arrive in Melbourne with a very different engine to last year."

STAFFING CHANGES

Renault has also restructured its technical staff.

White has been made chief technical officer and will work alongside former head of production Jean-Paul Gousset, who is now organisation performance officer.

There is also a new development department, headed by Naoki Tokunaga, aimed at maximising performance and reliability across all teams.

Taffin will take on an expanded role to oversee factory operations as well.

Abiteboul said: "F1 constantly moves forward at a very fast rate. The sport evolves, technology evolves and the competition never sleeps so Viry needs to evolve at the same rate.

"Viry needed a refresh. We did not suffer from a lack of resources or finances in 2014, it was simply that the resources were not joined up in time or used to their optimum."

Yes. I haven't found anything from McLaren stating the time but everywhere else it seems people are mentioning 10:00 (AM) their local time, so about 34 minutes from now.

*edit: Yep, looks like that wasn't the correct time at all.

That McLaren looks good, except for the plain boring livery.

 

Quite like the livery; not a fan of the nose.

 

Its not bad.

 

Not a bad looking car overall. I was hoping for a retro color scheme. Such is not the case. I do hope the Honda PU can workout early on and provide some competition to the Mercedes machines!

 

Beautiful car. Unbelievably tight side pods. Honda must have incredible confidence regarding their cooling needs. The rear uppermost a-arms feature flaps inboard of the rear wing pylons which I am sure we will see many configurations.
