I need a new A/V receiver. I currently have a Pioneer Elite VSX-92-TXH that has 130W per channel. It is failing and keeps shutting off. We've used it daily since January 2008 when we purchased it new. We run all of our HDMI devices into it and then one HDMI goes to the TV. We have a powered Polk Audio 12" subwoofer and pretty big Polk Audio speakers connected to it. Our old family room was the size of a 3 car garage with 16 foot ceilings, so we were sold this unit which worked well. We just moved and the new room is the size of a 2 car garage with 9.5 foot ceilings. We run it with 2 fronts, one center and 2 rear speakers and a sub.

What receiver would you guys recommend we buy? I'm thinking Denon, Onkyo or Pioneer. I'd like to do steaming from iPhone to receiver if possible and have 2 zones so I can run outside music in the summertime. I'm open and looking for pros and cons. I need at least 4 HDMI inputs and do not really need Dolby 7.1 or 7.2 but will take it if I need it.

Also, where should I buy it from? We have a 10% coupon for BestBuy since we just moved.

I bought Denon a few years ago because in my living area I have both 5.1 surround and old school Infinity stereo speakers that I still listen to music on. I needed something with different output modes to handle my needs. Denon was one of the few that could do it.

I haven't been happy with it. Its user interface is overly difficult and the 2 channel output zone won't drive my big speakers to the volume I want for my rock and roll with 120W. My old receiver would shake the house with 100W.

If you care about 4k resolution you might consider waiting a few months for receivers to start shipping with support for HDCP 2.2. They'll need to have that support in order to display copyrighted content in the 4K resolution format.

It's a moving target to try and keep up with evolving standards, but I'd suspect 4k will be fairly ubiquitous by next year, even though there's currently not a ton of content available.

I start by saying I haven't kept up to speed on reciever / home theater technology over the past few years. But I will say 12-13 years ago I bought a Pioneer Elite receiver, one of their best at the time. I loved it.

When I moved and set up a new theater about 7 years ago, I bought a new Denon 4302 (I think that's the number), one of their best at the time. I liked the pioneer better. Even after calibrating both for room acoustics, the pioneer still sounded a little nicer to my ears. I plan on buying another one in a year or so, and I would probably look for something other then a Denon. I would start my search with Pioneer again.

    Just my general, un-scientific opinion.

My Denon replaced my Marantz. I loved the Marantz but the Denon is superior.

Take the case off the Pioneer and clean the heat sinks.
If they come off take them off and get some heat sink paste from your local Best Buy/ Frys etc and reapply.
New computers have the same problem.

    That's a GREAT receiver BTW.

I've been into hi end audio for +25 years and the mid level units that Marantz and NAD put out are great. Both have great quality D/A converters and features. The NAD's have a great feature where the reciever is very easly upgraded. In today's ever changing electronics that's a great selling point. If you go NAD I would suggest purchasing a FACTORY REFERBISHED unit from an authorized dealer. NAD products are great quality but remind me of Ford Mo. Co.? Let the consumer deal with recalls.
I have been waiting for many years for the new Acurus pre/pro amp. coming out in a couple months. Theirs a great audio site called Audiogon = audiogon.com. It's like eBay for audio but for people who want that much more in their audio. I just purchased a pair of Sonus Faber Aida speakers from Audiogon along with numerous other items for many years and feel secure dealing with Audiogon.
    Good luck.
