Lumention is an optical trigger system.
Any difficulty in using a magnetic triggering system like Pertronix?
    Is Tach output affected?

    Thank you

You can install a hall sensor setup instead of a Lumenition optical switch, but reluctor wheels and hall sensors are more difficult to source than the Lumenition setup.

A Pertronix setup is somewhat less precise (up to 4º difference between cylinders due to the way the magnets are installed in the sleeve) and it would require a custom electronic circuit to adapt the output to the Bosch system.

The tacho output signal is created by the Bosch ignition module, so no issues with either the Lumenition or a hall sensor setup.

    I have two AEC 103s.
The version without connector cover has marking 1D while the one with a cover is 2L

New variety perhaps or date stamping?

Interesting, thanks! I went through my archive and found another one from october 1970 which has the same enclosure. Haven't noticed this before.

I assume the number is the year after 1970? What's the mapping from letters to months? Lucas used date codes for electrical components like relays but they made more sense - first numeric months 01-12, superseded later by the week of the year 01-52, both variants followed by 2 digit year.

The number is the year after the decade, the character indicates the month. The mapping changed after the seventies, also the month code is not consecutive, as example the 'J' is left out in the original coding but was reintroduced later on.
Although Marelli used this code on many of their products, it was actually introduced by Fiat.

    Missing the J would mean L=November ? :)
Sorry, I just went with the windscreen codes, they didn't skip J.

I need to check mine again...

K was also left out but reappeared in the eighties somewhere, i also have it in the nineties code listing, together with J. Not sure if there was any logic behind this.

I'm sure there was internal logic. Whether anyone else would find it logical is open for debate. Latin alphabet doesn't have a J (remember Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade?), maybe that has something to do with it.

My Bosch unit arrived but did not come with thermal grease.
I have some Wurth CU 1800 which is an AntiSeize lubricant good to 1800 degrees
that I was thinking of using. Is this adequate?

Not sure that this will work as intended, but should be no problem to source thermal grease via ebay. Or mail me your postal address and i'll send you some, should have some of the Bosch supplied bags left.

Hi I have almost completed my conversion however note that the fitting kit link in this thread is different to the one shown in the step by step guide be daviek. It should work but the method is different.

Did it work out as expected? Some of the trigger wheels (choppers) are a bit larger and need a shim, others are smaller and fit with a bit of sanding. My preference is the #411 chopper from the FK124 set, which requires just a bit of sanding and some black window sealer for the installation.

One was a very expensive Perma-Tune unit I boought in Aug of 1994 for $425.00 and now I'm gutting it just to use the Marelli case.

The problem is that PermaTune/Lonnie tried to clean up the case and there were "shine" marks everywhere. Vapor blasting brought back the original cast look and finishing luster

Installing 2 units; an OEM Bosch and a VW.
The diagonal placement allows clearance for the connector removal while the lateral mount requires connector installed prior to mounting.

My Bosch install went really well, quite easy however the chopper was set statically and was a long way out once I timed the car running, I don't really understand why but it meant removing the chopper and turning it then glueing it back, the chopper itself fitted perfectly first time without shims or sanding. Car runs a lot better now

Had a request on the source for vapor blasting:

    Jeff Gibson in Oregon http://www.vaporblasting.biz/How_to_Order_Vaporblasting.html

You can tell it is a one man operation and he spends nost of his time in the shop as he can be a little cryptic on shipping costs & primitive on payments. I just calculated $15 for the return by USPS Priority and he only takes checks/MOs. This allowed me to send a check with the order so the return didn't get held up by a check clearing

How did you reattach the blue data plate to the case? Mine was fixed to the case in an odd way - no rivets or screws - and I had to chisel the top off the four fixing locations to get the plate to lift off.

I see MSD now has a new digital 6AL2 which has a smaller outline - has anyone taken that apart and will it fit in a Marelli box?
MSD Ignition Kit 6AL 2 Ignition Box Blaster 2 Coil Universal Coil Bracket | eBay

Avoided damaging the post mounts on removal, used adhesive on the old one to attach it.
