I'm not a mechanic by far. And I have no interest in wanting to take my mechanic's place. Nor doing my own major services nor other heavy lifting. I like knowing that I'm getting what I pay for and that my car is in good hands running perfectly.

But I do love learning about my car and the way it works. The owner's manual alone with the diagrams is a fantastic education. I will need to bust it out again when I get back from my current assignments.

What one 348 / F355 issue or process would you like to learn more about - to add to your knowledge wheelhouse? :)

For me it would be learning more about the ENGINE and TRANSMISSION. What all the parts are. How they work, and what happens from A to Z.

Although I dreamed of designing cars when I was very young, I never took the time to learn the basics of automotive 101 so I am playing catchup. I am up to speed on quite a lot but I will be going back a grade or two to nail the basics.

Great process. I'm looking forward to a road trip to join the stooges in April - six hours away from me. Should be a good time.

Maybe members can add their topics they would like to learn more about and someone with the knowledge can post a reply, send a PM, or take someone under their wing so we all can love our cars even more.

What would you like to learn?

    Best.

I've gotten a PDF file on the way to me extensively covering the engine operation of the F355.

Thank you much Mitch in helping my education :) I'll be happy to return the favor.

I still am confused as to how the crankshaft gets its power to the flywheel at the back of the car and then this power magically shifts via the clutch back towards the engine where the gearbox is activated and then the diff and then onto the driveshafts...

What is happening inside the transmission....is it Italian voodo?
How does the propshaft connect to the crankshaft?
Is there another shaft inside the propshaft that goes from the clutch to the transmission?
    It's crazeeee stuff!!!

I'd like to know about the electronics. I installed a wireless backup camera and wired it to my running lights. When I turn on the running lights the car has actually shut off twice. Holy ****! it's grounded to the ground bolt that is next to the positive terminal in the engine bay. I have brought it to three professionals. I give up. I disconnected it, feeling quite defeated. You know what happens when I turn on the running lights when the car does not shut off? The engine skips a beat. When I shut the rear engine lid or open it again, the engine skips a beat. at this point I think my next step is to bring it to a witch doctor and cast a couple spells and see if that fixes it. I am totally lost on this issue, but I have already started a thread on this to no avail. In summary, yes I would definitely like to know more about how the electronics work on my 355.I am not trying to crack open this topic within this thread but yes I would definitely like to know more about electronics.

Definitely the "semi-active" suspension. What is the computer doing to the bilstein dampers based on what parameters.

How would I go about getting that done ? I'd like a set up where I could put the cats on for the annual test, but off most the time.

I would like to know how to lower the car taking into consideration the age of the adjustable shocks and will something snap that would ruin my whole month.

You just need 02 simulators. Search google. There used to be a place 02simulators.com but I think they are gone now. I used to just build them from parts at radio shack!

I have read just above everything I can find on the F1 system. I would like to know more on what goes on in the actuators and the ECU. Hard stuff to find.

A shop on our FB site responded to a member looking for a top ecu that he needs to have it checked in a sd1 of 2.

This just piqued my curiosity more.

Bob, you will likely find that hand written and sitting within the ark of the covenant.

I have seen BOB's top work, and I am jealous as mine does not work and I had to convert it to manual...if we had a race to put tops up and down, he could take a coffee break beforehand and still beat me.

The crankshaft and the clutch output shaft are concentric with the crankshaft extension running inside the clutch shaft. The crankshaft extension goes all the way back to the end of the pumpkin and causes the outsides of the clutch to turn. An engaged clutch causes the clutch output shaft to turn.

Once back inside the transmission, the drop gears take the clutch output shaft to the 90 degree bevel gear which causes the main shaft of the tranny to turn.

The selected gear causes the lay shaft of the tranny to turn.

The lay shaft is connected to the differential, and the differential to the output (wheel) shafts.

I also though about this...I was less confused before I read how it works...I need pictures lol

Great idea for a thread...I feel inadequate as a human being for not coming up with it myself

At the moment, I'd like to know more about fuel trims and open loop vs closed loop operation.

For example, under what conditions is the ecu supposed to switch from closed loop to open loop (after reaching operating temp of course)

I'd love the learn the motronic 2.7 bin mapping to look at the different fuel and timing maps (and maybe edit them). Limited to '95 and some euro '96 cars, but would open up tuning options a lot if that data were known and out there.

Can anyone decipher in a diagram with pictures what this Italian voodo machinery looks like?
