From the rendering, I think the 488 is gorgeous. So, is it worth it? Well, I buy something like a Ferrari based on emotion, not logic. So far, if the car in person looks as good as the rendering, then to me, yes, it's worth it and I am going to exchange my 458 for a 488.

Sound is part of that emotion as well. My thought is that Ferrari certainly is WELL aware that this car has to sound great. Again, I will wait until I hear it, but I am inclined to think they spent a lot of time effort and money to get the sound right.

    Cheers,

    Ron

Exactly. Everyone is talking as if Ferrari is unaware of how important the sound of its V8 is to its customers. They will move heaven and earth to make it sound good.

I think these "what should I do" threads are always kinda silly. We are always going o do what we want. What others think matters little. Maybe a thread titled "Compare the 458 to the 488" would be better then the people who are thinking of upgrading can use some of the information to make a decision. But asking others what you should do doesn't sound like it should be coming from a successful person. Anyone driving a Ferrari has to be successful......or lucky.

Well, look at it this way.

If the AC works in this car you can

    1) drive it 6 months more a year or
    2) drive it without the female passenger asking every time she gets in why a car that costs 300 Grand has such lousy AC.

    Could be worth it.

Do you like how current F1 cars sound(in person)?

    I agree with RLIPS.

I would say the driving profile of this car looks to me like a 458 +. There's gonna be more power and torque, but they are very cleaver with the torque- they are making the power delivery more like a NA motor than a TC motor.

I'm sure the sound will be more muffled, but I don't consider the V8 sound so musical anyway. I think it sounds good- I love it- but its no V12 for sound.

So- only you know if its worth it.

I love my 458 and I think I prefer the looks of the 458 (I just think the 458 is a masterpiece and the 488 seems too busy)- but I historically resist change and then I'll fall in love with it. So, guess what, no one wanting a year 1-2 488 has to worry I will be taking up a spot in line. But what happens after that....

Maybe he wants to just get feedback from other owners and fans of the marque? I don't think its silly- but I get your point that you can only understand yourself. However, for some of us, no one in our friends and family quite understands the passion for Ferrari except other Ferraristi.

PS gorgeous car in the first post.

Eliminating monetary considerations allows clear thinking, then "reality" sets in with regard to risk tolerance and preferences. I agree, few of us want to waste money, but spending $3-400.000 on a "car" might appear (just) a bit excessive to those on, let's say, the "Volkswagen Forum" (lol). Best

Maybe, along with the sound, Ferrari "will move heaven and earth" to make it actually feel cold. Perhaps using some of that cleaver turbo technology?

I test drove the Cali-T for about 30 minutes. It actually drove fairly linear with more low end torque compared to my 458. They've done a good job on the engine. The sound is not as good.....once the exhaust is open it is ok but fairly quiet car otherwise good as a daily! It certainly has lost all the pops and burbles from the N/A engine. It didn't help that I then test drove the FF, which in comparison sounded like a beast, screaming all the way to redline! I was very impressed by the FF's performance and handling in the canyons, it didn't feel like a big car at all. I hope they can improve the sound in the 488!

Is that why we have Speciale owners complaining about sound?

Your advice is spot on. Ferrari's are excessive, it makes no sense. But if you can do it........

Yes you should buy it. It will be a thrill ride to drive this car! I have a McLaren 650S and Ferrari 458 Spider. I barely drive the Ferrari because the incredible torque punch of the McLaren is so much more addicting every time you leave a stop light, every time you accelerate on to the highway, every time you pass someone on the highway, and every time you take it to the track. This car will now have that kind of power. You'll absolutely love it!

Combine that with a more modern & aggressive look, updated electronics, a more composed interior and improved aerodynamics and this is going to be wonderful improvement over the 458. It will make your 458 feel slow. It's 3/10 of a second faster to 60 mph and then with the built up torque probably even a bigger difference to 100. You WILL definitely feel that difference.

So don't let people held back by owning a 458 tell you your car is good enough. When they get their 488 GTBs they'll be bragging about what a huge improvement it is over their previous car. Happens every time!

A friend let me drive his Italia and warned: you will want to buy one. An he was right. I did.

So unless you REALLY want to buy a 488 drive one. If you don't, don't.

I personally felt the McLaren 650s, wasn't much fun, and quite clinical in feeling. Sounds very weak to me, regardless of how fast , and I know it's faster than probably most cars on the street including the 458. In comparison, I felt the 458 has more passion, if you want to call it that. Sounds amazing, and just a pleasure to get into and drive. I don't own a 650s, but drove my friends' 650s. And now he's also trying to sell it after owning it a few months. I liked the doors on the 650s, that was about it. But anyways, just my opinion.

I don't agree. I own a 650S, and it is the fastest stock car I have owned. It's very exciting, and I love the sound of V8 and turbos. Ferrari fans will like the new 488. I drove today top down I. My 650S. Had a huge smile.

Good insight. Don't pass judgement unless you've owned one. Test drive may be deceiving. Macca is pretty in blue.

I own a 650s and a 458 spider.. My opinion is quite the opposite.. The 458 is much more fun, try reving the engine of both and 650s gives back nothing.. The kick you get from the gearshifts of 458 is much more dramatic than a 650s, makes you feel you are driving a very special sports car.. Both cars are very fast for street driving, given 650 faster but in street driving the overall experience is what i judge from and 458 IMO is much more complete experience... So if 488 is going to feel and drive like the 650 id rather stick to the 458... However in the no logic world of super cars, when enough ppl are bragging about how much of an upgrade the 488 is, it may get tempting ... But i think it will need alot of convincing test drives to give up on the 458.. Today if i had to sell one of the 458 or 650, id probably let go of the 650, given part of the reason being the affection for the ferrari brand over the mclaren

Mark, how do you like your McLaren? The YouTube videos I see of the McLarens, they seem to blow the competitors out the window! I am hoping the 488 will compete with the 650 in the 1/4 mile.

Very nice 650S!!! I just noticed via YouTube and track tests how much faster the 650S is compared to all others!

Agree with you, the 650s has the numbers but I just don't like the design - since the F1 there isn't a Maclaren I find appealing. I have the same feelings about the R8 - just bland.

Agree. However there is a black R8 in the valley that really is a head turner. I have sworn to never own another black car. The other colors are indeed bland.
