I was crossing the street one evening across from my home. Crosswalks are about a quarter mile in either direction. It's after rush hour so very little traffic, so I think "eh, what the hell"...

Cop at light sees me, speeds up and whistles for me to stay put. I comply, feeling like a bit of an ass, but hoping to get off with a warning. Nope. Ticket for $300. $300!?!

I know this isn't car related, but just FYI for those of you who don't know... As a new California resident, I had no idea the fine would be so severe.

    That's infuriating.

I hate crossing the street at intersections because that's where all the cars are. It's far safer to do it when nobody has to stop for you and there isn't any cross traffic.

I have not done my research, but if I had that ticket issued, I would fight it and find a way to win. First research on the actual code, then find a definition of a cross walk, and exemption of (size of street, location or zoning, etc...), and make the cop prove every one of those points.

Finally, any ticket for any moving violation is 500 bucks now. Ashholes.

Oh I'm keeping that one in my secret drawer of tricks. lol.

Maybe they need a healthy dose of "city crime" so there's actually something meaningful to pursue.

I didn't know the fine amount until I received the court judgement in the mail. I assumed it would be $75 or so - not worth my time in court....

As for why I live in Fremont, we moved here from the east coast last summer. Fremont is halfway between my and my wife's offices. And the view from the aprtment isn't bad.

For what it's worth, we are building a house in San Jose.
