Hello all, My cars previous owner has painted the area behind the front grill to red for some reasons. I am pretty sure, that is not original factory work. Now I am planning to restore that area to original, but I need some help. How do I mask that area? Where is the border between black and red color? Just underneath the grill or in somewhere else? Can someone send picture from original? Thanks in advance. Br, Ville Image Unavailable, Please Login
If you want to pimp your TR ghetto style: step one: paint red behind the front grill (check), step two: neons, spinners, 12000 watts subwoofer, and a skull shifter knob. Thank you for painting it back to black, you're giving this poor TR her dignity back! Take pictures of the process if you can!
Maybe the former owner resprayed the complete front and did not complete the black part ... Use the grill and LOOK what has to be black ... EASY ! Spray can matte black ... 5 minutes job Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Did someone say paint job? Here's an old school ferrario that needs some luvin' Ya' know what I means? http://youtu.be/0gldhzkzGmk Sent via itty bitty electrons
Agree, this area looks bad painted body color. The correct color is semi-gloss/satin black. On the bottom, mask right through the center of the three holes for the pins in the grill. On the top, just mask along the inside right to the middle or edge where the grill goes (so no paint is forward of the grill). Along the sides use the photos as reference--they didn't spray where the fog lights mount and just misted out to the edge--the key is to ensure the central part of the bumper is coated fully. Mask off where the rubber bellows for the brake cooling ducts start as they are very flexible and if painted the paint will flake off. Like the spoiler this area gets blasted by road debris (and bugs in my case) so apply several coats of paint for durability. Thanks Tim! This was just, what I was looking for! I have Motip semigloss paint, I think it is very close to original glossy.
Many thanks for the info. My '87 TR is also painted red behind the front grill, which I'm going to correct and paint semi-matt black in a couple of months time. I'm guessing the chrome prancing horse is wrong too.. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Leave the chrome Cavallino on there !!! Why did they changed that on the successor ? Yes ... because it looks nice / better !
Tim, great pics. Do you know if that is how it left the factory? I chatted to the original owner of my TR (he is now a charter customer of mine) and he told me his wife gave him the chrome Cavallinos for a birthday present. Its nice to solve little mysteries on our cars.
I actually think that black front Cavallino on that silver/gray car looks best of all - I wonder why they didn`t do that from the factory like the rear? If I was going to keep the front one chrome I would keep the rear one chrome too - I don`t think they look bad - but on the other hand those wide black grills are one of the main things that gives the Testarossa it`s look - and putting chrome Cavallino`s on there seems to break it up a bit too much. The later versions of the car have a similar front end theme to other 90`s Ferrari`s - but that unique plain black front grill on the 80`s Testarossa`s makes it unmistakable for any other Ferrari, even of it`s own era - it`s what gives it "the look" Dom
To the best of my knowledge that was the factory paint and demarcation lines. I have since had my front bumper re-sprayed and I had them mask off the factory black and just re-spray the red (but this photo was from before that).
