The Mayor mentioned less than stellar air conditioning systems on contemporary Ferraris.

What's the down side to ordering a car with whatever unit Ferrari installs for cars that are destined for the Middle East (I'm assuming they offer one for hot climates)? Some weight, for sure. Do these use the same refrigerants as the paranoid West? Crash testing issues?

A friend came back from Maranello yesterday and he told me he'd seen the 488 GTB Spider (or whatever name they'll give it now). I'll ask him about further details later. He just sent me a message this evening saying that he'd seen the car and really liked it.

I suppose we may see an event resembling that of the California T launch.

My dealer said exactly the same thing after seeing the Spider last week "really really nice…"
The official presentation in Frankfurt this September with probably private client viewing end of August in Maranello. For the 458 Spider, also presented in Frankfurt, I was able to test drive it in November, some early birds clients got theirs for Christmas but the deliveries really started in January. I anticipate the same cycle for the 488 Spider version.
I am on the list for that one but the sound package of the new 488 will be a key element for me. We will know more in a few weeks time with the first road tests.

MM could you ask if the glass engine cover is coming back? I am curious to see how they work the blown spoiler on the GTS...

He told me this morning that the car he saw was partially covered, so couldn't provide a definite answer.

Why they don't call it 488 GTB? "New V8 Sports Car". Couldn't it be 488 GTS? I know, little too soon, but wouldn't it be nice to see first spiders on road this summer?

Because they are marketing people, and marketing people like to pack their products in fancy wrappings.

That sounds like it's right. We shouldn't expect any surprise. It will definetely be nice to see live photos of 488.

Looks like demand is already sky high on this car. Spoke to a few dealers to put me on the list and all said it was well over 20 plus deep with LaFerrari guys getting to the front followed by guys who bought five plus cars recently.

Seems the turbo isn't an issue for anyone. Now they just have to up production to 10k to avoid the long waits.

I can up my place in the line if I order a California. Thoughts?

I guess it depends on how big a hurry your are in and whether you want a California or not.

You never really know where you are in line anyway.

I'm sure there is plenty of puffery, but I am also sure there is very solid demand for this car. The car is a wonderful follow up to what seems to me as Ferraris greatest ever V8 street car.

There will be plenty of used cars with less than a 1000 miles on them 2 years from now. They are going to make a lot of them potentially more than the 458. They will not be rare. If I get an allocation in the next year or so I may take it but I can have one anyway.

I bought my '11 458 1.5 years old with 150 miles on it. I was able to read road tests and wait for some of the bugs to be worked out.

No need to take a hit on a car you don't want.

What was the market on your 458 when you got it? Did you pay over/under msrp and about how much if you don't mind me asking?

If I can pick up a 488 under MSRP in 1 to 2 years with < 1000 miles that's not such a bad option. Or I can be a little further behind the curve and pickup a 458 Spyder pretty cheap once the 488'*****. In the past the prior models accelerated depreciation as soon as the new ones hit the streets. I was on the tail end of the 430 and learned that lesson the hard way.

It didn't look as vulgar as I thought it might in person, but the interior/instrument cluster is way over the top -- and I saw it at night (driver's door open.)

These guys are right. The dealer will sell you a Cali T, and even then there no guarantee. Has your dealer specified what kind of place you'll get on the list if you buy a Cali, and is he willing to put it in writing?
