VERY happy with my recent '92 Mondial T leather project! Drivers side seat bolster and car door sill dyed with LEATHERIQUE CUSTOM MATCHED 8oz dye kit that includes the cleaner and dye. http://www.leatherique.org/restoration_products.htm You will need to buy some 320-grade sandpaper and a decent acrylic paintbrush for application. I sent a small piece of leather from under the seat and they matched it perfectly. Sorry for the somewhat bad Blackberry pictures as the colors don't look great but they did match extremely well in real life. Nice Job, Did they keep records of your dye match? Since we both have 1992 Ts, I wonder if they could just mix up a batch for me based on your data? thanks, Dave
Bad idea unless you want to redo everything in the car. I did the Leatherique thing twice and I have to admit that they failed to match my samples perfectly. A long way off, in fact. But, good for you if they match yours.
Looks Great, do you have any pics of what the seats looked like after sanding and before dying? how far down do you sand them, or do you just "scuff" them up? Thanks, Mark
I guess this would be the thread to ask this the question, if your car has been dyed, can you re-dye ? I am currently trying to get mine reconditioned using Zymol as everything is like cardboard. Thoughts and/advice would be appreciated.
Andrew: What is Zymol? Is it oil-based? Is it Silicon-based? I have some mild cardboard-like leather issues and I have not solved them with Leatherique I guess because part of my leather has been painted? and anything I use does not seem to penetrate. Removing it is tedious and very difficult using solvents and I am afraid to really damage the leather. Any comments welcome.
Randal, This is just reading off the label, " It is solvent free premium formula containing collagen, biodegradable emulsifiers and emollients derived from nature, vitamin E, aloe Vera neatsfoot oil restores the natural moisture balance and supple feel of fine leathers." I have put several coats on mine and I have noticed a difference as some of the luster is coming back, but it is going to take time. You can look it up on the internet, I purchased mine on ebay, the have a cleaner that should be used prior to the conditioner.
From the description it sound to me it is very similar to Leatherique. Randy like you said it may not penetrate because if the dye(paint) that seals the surface. I know it could be a very hard job but if it could be soaked by the underside of the leather it would go deaper in the skin.
Salut Claude, Hope you are good and keeping warm. I do have some possibilities to get at the back of the skins in some places but mostly not where I need it. I have sanded some of the the painted areas with 600 sandpaper and it seems to help penetration somewhat.
Yes Randy, I'm good and I burn wood so it's warm. But WAY too much snow. Tonight -46C with windchill. Last friday morning we had -38C before windchill. Lots of wood in the boiler.
