I'm really glad I see things differently, treat cars differently and love and enjoy them differently. it makes me laugh at some who only hunt for words here and and they forgot some of us owns few exotics and enjoy them differently. Mclaren got my bussines as simple as that now go prove the 918 is faster mine coming soon and that's will makes me happy too. Then few later someone will prove Mclaren won another test an then I'm happier. and so on with laferrari and others. Keep arguing keep talking about tires and mechanical grip or Downforce, battery..etc Like some planning a world championship race, when some of us driving to late dinner or friendly track day without the ego I'm the fastest. simple any of the 3 cars and I drove them all nothing but Special. If I want to be the fastest on track I'll contact SRT to build me one of one Viper GT3-R and I can break any record i want. But I'm reasonable guy i respect people choices and I keep away from non sense talks, I'm driving exotics since I'm 15 so I got my own view and experience and its always been "who cares what others thinks" And its working pretty good lol. But some trying to justify they bought the better car and force you to believe sorry to me that's an secure approach, we happy for your choice so move one no need to try and say yah it's just a 12C or hey they said 500 (not true) but built 375 only. That's not your or anyone call anyway, they free to build whatever they like. I'm happy with my P1 experience and Mclaren HQ and Porsche will deliver my 918 WP and I know they not alike at all and as I said I'm loving that candies approach. Mbn
Seriously guys there really is not point trying to reason with LMFAO. He'll just drown you with one logical fallacy after another.
You apologists/cultists are simply ABSURD! Good F'ing Grief! Every time 918 eats the P1's lunch, y'all come out blazing with excuses, your uninformed 'caveats'. It's getting soooooo F'ing old after nearly 800 pages. 918 HL mode a gimmick? Are you dense? Modes are changeable on the fly. GET OVER IT... 918 simply much more than P1 can chew. FFS!!! Here's the real kick in balls. 918 in Race Hybrid, ie lap after lap, is neck and neck with P1 on TRo F'ing Feo's!!! 918 on Track tires such as forthcoming 'Cup X' or Trofeo's? Err.. .P1 wouldn't see which way it went. This is the biggest slap in the face for Ron Dennis an ye faithful. The 'track destroyer' is destroyed by the 'underpowered fat pig'. Porsche kicking back laughing their butts off. They've made A LOT of money off 918, and will continue to based on the tech trickle down. Cherry on top, it's nobody's ***** when it comes to put up or shut up. Cultists...unbelievable.
I applaud your ability to appreciate them all. And you are truly lucky to have access to all 3. But your stance on the 'debate' is something else. The issue here has to do Mac and ye faithful 'writing checks that P1 can't cash'. I get it, some owners, and ALL cultists will believe to the end that 'their' 1.2mil machine is the end all be all...the fastest, most exciting, blah blah blah. It's these people that keep this 'debate' alive. They cannot and will not ever believe that the porker is the better built, higher quality, more bespoke car...a car with an insane performance envelope. 918 shades P1...again. And again...cue the excuses. The 'But... But....But...' What's worth noting in all of this rage, is Porsche's calmness. They know P1 has been running around on Trofeo's trying to claw back some respect. They simply don't care. Next gen Michelins are coming, but they are comfortable enough to sit back and enjoy the show. And yes, they can, and do have access to non production bespoke 'track' tires sized for 918. The engineers know FULL well what this car will do with proper track shoes. The 'debate' will not end anytime soon. Just go out and drive the crap out of your cars. I'm jealous. That is all.
Exactly, let's say your on track in a 918 with your buddy in a p1 and your both good drivers having a fun run. The 918 will be faster in the first lap or two. After that the p1 will overtake you and give you a marginal gap in next couple of laps. More consistent due to not having a hot lap mode. I'm actually starting to like the 918 more by the day, I still think the p1 is more of a drivers car and is more fun on track. I know that different tracks will suit certain cars more than others in terms of timing. I'll say it again, Kudos to Porsche for continuously improving the 918 and for attaining this level of performance. And to Mclaren, kudos for building the best car I have ever driven. Now I'm a purist, I'd pick Na over turbos any day. I havnt driven a Lf yet and looking forward to driving one soon. But for now, the explosive 900+ hp of turbo/electric power is so intoxicating it should be illegal. Well technically it is illegal in race mode on public roads
It's not that simple Drift. PCNA reps I've spoken to, as well as info from several owners, have clearly explained how adjustable the performance of 918 is. Knowing when and where and how to use what the car has on offer, the modes, will make you awfully hard to catch much less pass, after you get the jump from standing start. Why do you still believe your 918 only has 'take it or leave it' modes, where the car is severely neutered if not in HL mode 100% of the time? Everyone keeps forgetting how fast the car is in Race Hybrid...within 5-7 seconds at the Ring. If that's not good enough, take comfort in knowing that 918 on equivalent Trofeo's will do more than enough even in everyday 'Sport' Hybrid. Goodness, 2 seconds worth on a GT3 over standard MPSC2. You should go out and put a lot of track miles on it, experiment, see for yourself.
Drift, even you found, that for straight line speed (fast straights on every track) HL isn't the proper mode due to the aero setup. For this purpose you have RH and even Sport. The charm of this car is the ability to "play" with the different modes, throughout the specific lap and the goals you want to achieve...
FFS!! Go out and drive your cars lads, who gives a **** which one is .000001 sec faster on any given track! Just enjoy your cars and stop this ridiculous discussion! We have the best hypercars one could desire at the moment, do we really need all this?
No one is forgetting how fast it is in Race Mode or HB Mode because no one knows. For some reason there don't seem to be any tests with it and Porsche has never once suggested using such modes in tests. There seems to be a lot of commentary on here on how one should drive cars they have no experience with...
Thanks. Out of all the debate which will Leads us to nothing. Did you drive the P1 and the 918 back to back ? I can say without question the P1 the most exciting to drive actually it's more than just exciting and Mclaren did get my respect way before, because I've been to MTC/MSO and saw all the hard work they doing the plans and the friendship I built with the team. And to be fair the 918 also deliver an exciting experience with a different approach, plus an open top so to me they apples and oranges and I like fruits. better built quality than Porsches ? I can't say until I take delivery of my 918 WP and have some time with the car, but I'm aware of Porsche quality long time ago, but I won't call my P1 a bad quality car either. Some of us see things differently which is a good thing, some may feel touchy if someone accused their car but in my case I'm confident in what I say so I have nothing to worry about or an agenda to prove my X car is the best, because I don't need to and I don't have to. my first Ferrari leaked oil, had F1 trans issues and the sticky parts made me crazy, my second ferrari my Scud Alcantar dash and a pillars fall apart few days after delivery. my first Mclaren leaked after two years and I replaced the crankshaft seal. My first Porsche had fuel issues with engine stalling middle of the road, trust me not a good situation. But I still owns all of the above because cars do break sometimes, nothing strange about it unless it's a lemon. Mbn
Bespoke GT3 MPSC2s != Bespoke 918 MPSC2s. OTS Trofeo Rs != Bespoke Trofeo Rs. The bespoke ones may well be modified for more longevity and that seems to be supported by peopel who track P1s regularly. MPSC2s were 2.4s faster than MPSC+ on the Jerez racetrack in Spain, therefore much faster than PZCS. I'd like to see a car with bespoke Trofeo Rs actually make more lateral g than a car with bespoke Trofeo Rs, so far this has never happened. Which effectively defaults to race hybrid after the battery runs low and it can only use what it regenerates. Porsche themselves say HL mode is good for 4s on the 'ring despite battery depletion meaning they can only use it for less than half of the lap. Or the lighter one? To save weight. They've been managing fine for brakes well before KERS reared its ugly head. Of course it did, that's been yet another consistent difference between MPSC2 and PZCS. Stickier tyres = better braking. It never ceases to amaze me the number of fools who think the brakes on modern supercars have any impact on 60-0mph braking figures. Here's a nice comparison for MPSC2 (458S) vs Trofeo R (Huracan) and PZCS (650S), see bottom of table. You can also see the difference between different bespoke sets of MPSC2 (GT3).
Hmm... Few months ago, a lot of people told you, that HL is different and very, very fast in the optimized car. Back then Mac followers were arguing that such thing doesn't exist, not proved, rumors, etc... Now we listen to the back side of the tape?
The P1 regenerates via the engine when not under WOT, this improves the braking feel. Even on Spa, which is a much longer, faster circuit, regen was not an issue for the P1: P1 vs 918 - Page 37 - McLaren Life On Laguna it'll actually be gaining charge. Looking at the graph the battery never gets below 80% of max towards the end but is hitting troughs near 70% of peak charge at the beginning, so the battery is recharging even with straights where speed gets over 150mph, faster than Laguna Seca. The 918 by comparison would be bottoming out the battery by lap 2.
Damn you have no idea how regen works on the P1. The battery is recharged via the engine when not under WOT or during traction control, so during corners, under TCS, in gearchanges and via the engine during braking. So it still recharges under braking, just not from the brakes. As pointed out above, the P1 battery maintains charge even on long GP tracks like Spa, where the 918 would be juiced out before the end of lap 1. 4s advantage on a 20.6km track with intermittent use due to battery depletion, with 2 minutes on, 4 minutes off and 1 minute on. So that 4s is coming from just 3 of the 7 minutes. And how the heck does (4/7) x 1.5 equal 0.7 anyway? If only Porsche had used Duracel.
?? Our Road/Race car is 2.1mm e and our customers and I are going to race it in real races and drive it on the road when we're not racing. BTW full photos and press release Friday before Geneva.
12C Spider. Don't really know much about that track. If I had a telemetry data trace I could probably make a call on it.
So where are the RM and HB results? Where are all the tests where people are switching between HL and RM mid-lap? Come on man, do you really think the people testing these cars haven't given it any thought or that Porsche hasn't explained how to use it? Do you really think the members of Fchat, 99% of which have never even driven the car, have figured out some strategy that no one else has?
Wait, wait... These "test" doesn't exist, because always the task of every "test" is to see, which car can set a faster lap time. For this reason, Porsche has "Hot LaP", which is absolutely enough for the Ring (so, every other track around the globe respectfully). Then, after the LS test, the loosing owner of the P1, decided to change the objective, seeing something in the telemetry... The new objective is 15 laps or 24 hours, i don't know... For all the above the 918 has the Race mode, as well as the other modes. You just need to use them, if the objective is endurance... Btw, I'm pretty sure, that when the test is published, we won't see a single word about 15 laps races, but let's see...
Many owners, and prospective owners, such as Argosy here, have driven the car in Race Mode (and even HL) on a track to their hearts content and actually gained on the battery. Many have stated this (besides Porsche's claims). It's well known. We also know, various magazines and individuals have driven the car on tracks during repeated, spirited driving and testing with no battery issues whatsoever (whether they were in Hot Lap, or Race Mode most of the time, who knows). Shrugs. Ironically, since you're bringing up batteries; one of them (EVO, and Jethro Bovington), communicated it was The P1's Battery which was very weak and disappointing in comparison to the 918's. Of course, this wasn't printed in the article, but it was tweeted, etc.. So, I find this entire discussion/subject quite humorous and rich. "Race Mode" is not an issue. Such a Red Herring. And suggesting such, only some appear desperate or unscrupulous (not saying necessarily you). This gives many Mac Super Supporters their well earned reputations as various cultist, flat earthers, Hallucinogenic participants, and probable, or known paid Mac internet crowd.
Well said. You understand!! Several of us had communicated earlier, the goals of magazine track testing, and/or the various modes of the 918 and how they can be utilized if/when necessary. Nonetheless, this is quite humorous and entertaining. Just get your popcorn. Sit back, and enjoy the show.
Ben, I was speaking about the "big 3" hyper cars - not yours. Your car obviously comes from a very different focus - a racing car first, street car second. I'm sure yours will feel quite at home going toe to toe with dedicated race cars and I look forward to the Road and Track article. The big 3 however were developed as cost no object ultimate engineered road cars by their respective manufacturers. Given that focus, they are not suited for racing, despite their high performance. Could you imagine an engine problem half way through an endurance race in a 918? How would the mechanic even get at the engine? It would probably take 15 minutes. Definitely not designed for racing. It is rather a showcase for engineering.
It's only about 100 kg lighter... For that 100 kg in the Porsche you get AWD, 4WS, brake regen, more than double the e-range on battery, removable roof, Burmester and much better infotainment. Oh... it's also faster on most tracks Only partially correct. Yes, they are saving weight, but the reason they have the option to save weight is the fact that, just like 918 and LaFerrari, they use electric generators to brake and generate electricity, helping the brakes. I know perfectly well how the battery is recharged on the P1. I was simply pointing out to you why P1 cannot have a HL mode like 918. A 918 can use the option of not using the ICE to recharge batteries and rely exclusively on brake regen. This is not insignificant because it brings cca 4 s on a lap of Norschleife. P1 cannot because do this, it doesn't have brake regen. LaFerrari cannot do this, it's battery is too small.
