Did you look at the car yourself? The seller's photostream link and some related youtube videos shows the car has been abused pretty hard. Looks like there's a coolant leak on the left side underneath the rear quarter panel as well, front bumper cracked, non-original shifter, scratches on bodywork along with painted hideous red accents and badges, etc.

If the Diablo was a small production run it would make sense to buy this cheap and store until the salvage tittle no longer has any relevance, i.e. in 20-30 years?

I think what makes most sense in the Diablo world is to try to import 1990 - 1991 models from Europe now that they are 25 years old...some of them are asking 80 - 90K Euro over there which includes VAT, so a ~20+% discount from that and with the Euro being in the crapper it makes that down to this car's value (if factoring in some $$$ fixes needed...never mind the salvage title which can't ever go away)

For those wondering (like me) about the difference between rebuilt VS salvage title, here is a quick read:
Rebuilt vs Salvage Title | Rebuilt Title

60K would be a great buy assuming it didnt need engine work right off the bat. But the custom stuff....needs to go.

That was a perfect candidate, but a car with a rebuilt title is a real bugger to get into canada. But somthing along those lines is what I'm looking for for sure.

when it was damaged and the insurance paid out, they then went to the state and the vehicle was given a "salvage" title.

They sell it at a salvage car auction for whatever their price is.

Whom ever bought it gets the wreck and the salvage title.

They fix the car to a (maybe) acceptable standard. Depending on the states rules from now is where it gets different from state to state.

In Michigan you must call one of the Certified Salvage Vehicle Inspector in your county to come look the vehicle over

SOS - Certified Salvage Vehicle Inspector List

    http://www.michigan.gov/documents/tr-13a_18951_7.pdf

    read that ^^^

after the inspection is passed you can go register the car get license plates and then the salvage title is turned in and you get a "rebuilt" title.

Hope this helps I know that **** is confusing.

Interesting...looks like the car sold so maybe the market is stronger than I thought.

If a clean title early diablo is around the 80-100 range and a common discount for salvage is around 30% then this car would be worth 55-75. Based on fixes required up front it would seem the buyer would be upside down on thew purchase just getting into it and then still have a salvage title.

He was willing to let it go at 52. The buyer may have gotten a better deal then that but the way diablo prices have been going I doubt you will see many more at that price range in ANY condition soon.

I don't know how you can tell that. User names are hidden and the x**x name is auto generated in each auction for others to see. It's specifically designed so people don't know who's bidding on what. I'm pretty sure if you started looking at bids in different auctions you would see the same x**x display name on 100,000 auctions. Its meaningless to who is actually bidding.

The high bid and sale price is shown at $40,600. Not bad for a beater/track car.

I went through this about 5 years ago when I laid down a 2002 MV Agusta. The bike ran fine but the fairings were scratched and are not repairable/paintable. They were expensive to replace and the repairs came within about 80% of the value of the bike, so it was wrecked out by my insurance company. I then began negotiating buying it back from them and after a few weeks came to a very reasonable price, so I bought it. However, it order for them to sell it back to me, it had to be stripped of its title and be issued a "salvage certificate" (technically not even a title, per se). I took my time locating used parts in decent condition and then looked up the list of PA-DMV-approved motorcycle inspectors who are licensed by the state to determine whether or not a m/c is "safe" to be converted back to a roadworthy vehicle (which is a very short list, btw). Anyway, in my case there was really nothing wrong with the bike, so as long as its turnsignals, horn, etc all worked, the mechanic was delighted to charge me a few hundred dollars to approve my bike and then began the process of converting the salvage cert to a rebuilt title, which wasn't all that bad as I recall. About a year later I sold the bike with full disclosure of the history and the title branding and actually made a profit. The key was finding the parts at reasonable prices.

Anyway, the point is, just because a car has a rebuilt title doesn't always mean its a basket case, and if the owner is savvy enough to negotiate buying his/her vehicle back from the insurance company for the right price its actually a very interesting proposition for the right person.

I don't need to check ****, I was joking sarcasm is lost on the internet. I guess I have to say HAHA after everything

Check it out while it wont let you know their name specifically (they used to) ebay tells you what their bid activity is.

But believe me I am not anylizing all auctions I just checked who the high bidder was and what he has been doing.

The high bid from the Diablo

    a***a ( 685) US $40,600.00 Feb-19-15 15:34:23 PST

    Follow this link.

    http://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBidderProfile&mode=1&item=161604005929&aid=a***a&eu=&bidtid=1221742618006&view=NONE&ssPageName=PageBidderProfileViewBids_None_ViewLink

With that info it says the bidder activity with this seller is 12% and states he has bid on two auctions with seller #1 that is the Diablo and the Porsche.

Besides I can look at A***A and 685 and know its the same bidder.

check this link the bid of 22,000 is the same guy so thats how you can kinda track someones bidding.

    http://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBids&item=161604004713&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2565

Nothing crazy just surprised the guy is biding on so many different cars I feel the A***A bidder is just biding for the fun of it

Okay, well that's weird. I have never seen an auction end early or be pulled where the listing shows a final high bid amount and says ended.

Yeah, if you look at the top it says listing was ended by the seller because the item was sold. I see it a lot on cars I'm watching that get sold off EBay and they end the auction. I don't know why they leave the last bid amount.

I talked to the guy between the auctions and while the second auction was still up. He said his bottom line was 51K and was willing to sell to the first to agree on that price and wire him the $. I was considering this at first but I could not get over the fact that there were 10K of parts and fixes right off the bat (this would be at cost, probably a lot more going through dealer or large parts channels).

Wheels (some $ could probably be recouped by selling off the rapper wheels), exhaust tips, bumper fix, repaint, clutch, seat and that covers the visible problems...who knows what else is neglected and like a gentleman here said nothing is cheap/easy fix on these cars.

So at the end of the day 60K with parts and no labor for a salvage car...using the 30% valuation it would mean an 85K equivalent no stories car. Can you still get an 85K early model car with high miles?

In the end I was on the fence on this and I asked the seller for a few more pictures of 'scratches here and there' and under the left rear quarter of the car where there was a visible leak and I never heard back so I was a little too lazy and too slow to make a decision on it...I'm sure one day this lambo will appear *cheap* but I don't know if it's the right one for me...

I think your looking at it the wrong way. Cost is always a factor obviously, but if you want to save the car and do it over a period of time it's not so bad. If you do everything in one shot..that can hurt the wallet. Fix the mechanicals first, then fix what ever else it needs over the long term.

    These are very simple cars.
