I live in the country, its a mixture of old farm houses, executive homes and mansions. The closest area with services is about 5miles away. That neighborhood is mostly immigrants, South Asians mainly. The neighborhood has a gang problem. Every few months someone gets shot or stabbed. It was worse a few years ago, my town became murder capital of Canada then.

Anyway, the most recent was last night. Someone stabbed at a gas station and they died. But its not just any gas station, I frequently go there. I was there last night, but before the murder. This one is too close to home.

story here: Murder investigation underway in Abbotsford - Abbotsford News

The other murder in the story was also near me.

    Oh hells bells.

Down here in SW Florida, we have a shooting almost every night on the news, and this is supposed to be the nice part of town.

Last week I went to get gas, the station was full of fire trucks and police cars. Robbed at gunpoint less than an hour earlier.

We've had four people killed in the last six months because of hit and run accidents, at least a couple more shot to death, and I don't feel any less safe than I did up north in my snooty neighborhood.

We got an email this morning advising us that there was a couple of guys trying to kidnap women in broad daylight from parking lots in the area. Sheriffs caught them this morning.

Life is dangerous. If you want safe, move into a bunker.

All other kidding aside, I do not envy you being out there in the middle of nowhere. Maybe time to grab a good alarm system, a nasty dog and a couple of reliable firearms.

It is bad elsewhere, but this is very small town Canada. The town once held the record for number of churches per capita.

I have Rottweiler's, well down to one. But on the hunt for a second. Canada, guns are difficult to get for home defense.

I betcha buying a shotgun for hunting isn't all that tough, and it's probably a better defensive weapon than a handgun.

Where I live about five years ago within a 12 month period there were seven or eight murders (depending on whether you believe the police ruling one a suicide). This is a town of about 12,000 people. But even during that time I never really felt unsafe.

    Why?

All of the murders were done due to relationships: husband, ex BF, or known enemies. Do you know if the murder at the gas station was gang related, or just a random act of violence or attempted robbery?

It was probably gang related. Makes it somewhat safer for the average person. Unless you somehow offend a gang member then you might have problems.

Believe some restrictions on shotguns here. Really the red tape, its really not worth buying a gun.

Gangs tend to leave civilians alone. It brings too much heat and they can't operate. The general population doesn't care much when gangs kill each other, its the misfires and drive bys when innocent people get killed that you hear the outrage.

We have only one civilian killed during a gang hit. He was a building maintenance worker, doing work in a gangsters apartment. Hit squad to a home invasion and he was killed.

I'm partly joking about moving. If I do move, its for more garage space.

It is the same for many criminal enterprises. Years ago this area was known as a chop shop haven, yet it was almost unheard of for cars to be stolen in the actual town.

Criminals know not to s*** where they eat...

The problem here is neighboring Washington now has legal marijuana. As the legal growers come on line there, the illegal ones slowly die off. The gangs are looking to replace the lost income. They are now fighting over a smaller illegal drug pie.

For the most part civilians have nothing to fear. Unless you happen to be near a gangster when they are killed.

Bars/nightclubs can refuse anyone entry, including basing it on a criminal record. Police have a program here, allows bars to run patrons drivers license. Criminal record and the establishment can refuse service. Police here do fear civilians being in the crossfire. Or someone doing something to set a thug off. Don't think the U.S, could do such a program, pesky constitution and civil rights.

Abbotsford is a very small town?? LOL

What is the population of Abbotsford..150,000? Not to mention it is adjacent to Vancouver. I wouldn't be surprised if the Greater Vancouver area (Vancouver and surrounding cities) is 3 million people!!

Abbotsford and Mission combined are maybe 150,000. We have Surrey and Langley separating us from Vancouver. A bigger city, yes, but still small town by most standards. We call it the city in the country. We shouldn't see the problems of a big city, its one of the most religious areas in Canada.

Ever been? I have numerous numerous times. Had bottls thrown at me from 4th floor windows because I was white, one of my guys robbed at gun point, gun shots were a nightly routine. Sad part is, you become used toit. Unfortunately 90% of my jobs are in crappy neighborhoods.

It really humbles you and makes you feel bad for these people that are stuck there.
