Nope. They are specifically designed not to do that. Presuming of course the belt installer knew what he was doing (another reason to use someone who does). That is why these idiots that do it by eye or by feel should be avoided like the plague.

The Challenge cars got a bad reputation for it and only because the A/C compressor is not there. On a street car even when the casting breaks on the 5/8 side it can't move far enough to be a problem because of the A/C compressor.

Before advice is given with a tone of certainty a little actual knowledge of the topic is a really good idea.

Well.. I don't know if I'd go THAT far..

I'd trust my mechanic who has done many to take a peek and get HIS take on it.

 

I was kidding Kurt, sometimes I wish Brian would stop being such ******.. All I said was that for the small added cost I would simply have them replaced as part of my belt service. It's spit in the ocean that is Ferrari ownership. It's one thing to say you are incorrect in your assumptions, another to throw a shot, or maybe I took it wrong... I don't pretend to be an expert, simply state my opinion, flawed as it may be!

 

Mr. Crall is a VERY knowledgeable guy. He is an asset to this community. Though his style can be taken the wrong way at times..

C'mon.. this is the internet! Of course you're an expert! We've all stayed in a Holiday in... or at least went on their website right?

 

I know he is and greatly appreciate him taking the time to be here! I know a bit about Porsche air cooled motors, but very little about these and would be the first to admit it!

 

He may be very knowlegable but does not easily share his knowledge. Normally we just get cryptic comments. The 2 failure modes are still a secret.

In most cases, he actually is superior, so do not run him off. Cannot count the number of things I have learned about Ferraris from Brian that you cannot find in any printed tech data and that nobody else will teach you. Have a few bullet holes, too, but such is life.

 

Taz, and curt. would you ever routinely participate in an equivalent Internet medical forum for laypeople? And if u did how would you treat the participants.

 

I would treat them with a refreshing candor which to some would come off as "meanness".. but in the end would come out in a "house" moment and find the cure. Everyone would cry with joy in the end..

As in medicine, anyone can memorize the book.. but its the experience that makes the difference.

 

Good one curt! However, Dr. House is teaching other professional colleagues not laymen, and getting paid in salary, ego boost, and Vicodin to do it. But would/do you routinely participate in a similar forum in your profession?

 

Here's the thing. I know a lot about a lot of different things. Engineering a bridge, designing concrete, building a 911 race motor. I don't talk DOWN to people and treat them like Ass***** because they don't have my knowledge. Brian does, which puts him in a category i'm happy not to belong to. I don't care if he is Enzo's nephew and was there from inception, he has no right to talk down to people the way he does. I have been polite, and could care less what this mechanic has to say at this point.. He is NOTHING more than a wrench, and there are 100,000 of them out there.

 

He made this comment after a spat with another fchat member.

"On the other hand if he shows up here looking for it (help) he will be staring at the muzzle of a Sig Sauer."

I was so disturbed by it that I stopped posting for awhile. He will never get my business no matter how good he is.

 

I agree. Expertise is no excuse for rudeness. Definitely some sort of personality complex going on here, witnessed it for years. We're all supposed to take it and not question it, lest he take his knowledge and leave again, like he's done before. Please. Who cares?

So one should ask what is/are his motive(s)?

I can think of 4:

a. Good for his business to make these cars seem so complex that only a "superior intellect" can possibly repair them, which scares diy'ers into shops. Also his "stock" goes up with his customers when they see his posts - free advertising.

b. narcissism

c. boredom

d. Altruism- lmao

There is such a thing as "infant mortality" too. My business is industrial manufacturing. I have loads of machines that run on belts for 10's of thousands of hours at a time without being changed. I'd say brand new parts fail at a pretty high rate of frequency.

The key with belts is to run them. Don't let them sit.

 

This is the internet. We all (well most of us) say things that we might not say in person. That being said.. I'll take a little crude-ness, brusque responses, and a "tell it like it is" answers that actually educate me and help me solve the problem...

over a forum that is filled with anecdotal poseur stories about how "I beat this guy in a race the other day", or "how much better the 360 is than a C06" other useless drivel that you might find on Jalopnik. There are many posters that, this being a public forum, post who obviously don't know that mufflers don't have bearings in them.. but who have an opinion on Variator failure. Rifledriver has my attention and my respect when he posts.

I'll read through the personality and brusque answers.. for me at least sticks and stones.. I've got a thicker skin.

 

That is the same same logic that calls hazing, humiliation, intimidation, and sexual Improprieties "kids just being kids." Do I hear adolescent suicide? Or in the case of this site... loss of what I consider its most valuable members. The level 2 apprentices. I.e. Those that have knowledge, skills and intellect, and also have the lugnuts to turn a wrench on their own cars and dare ask for some guidance. These chaps will, with tenacity, research and fix anything. I have learned lots more from these guys than the so called experts from this site.

 

Take it as you will. I for one am not so sensitive that some writings on the internet are going to intimidate me. I live in S. Carolina. We still have the right to defend our home from an armed intruder without

I fix my own car and I try to help out here as much as possible from a technical standpoint. But the rub is, a mistake on my Porsches while fixing the car will cost $20 in parts to fix. On my Ferrari that cost is x10. Sometimes the internets doesn't have the Youtube showing how to prevent that. Experts here know the *tricks* that you don't see on those videos. If I can prevent a break during the fix.. I'm grateful.
I appreciate that many owners do contribute.. and we learn from them. But they haven't been doing this for 30 years. I'm sorry, but I might be good and fix my baby with perfection.. but that doesn't mean that I know enough to write a column for Forza.

So the discussion never really was is he qualified. Nor was it, does he potentially have valuable information and pearls that can save dough, time and heartache. Even those members most negative on our esteemed expert emeritus would not doubt that. So published in forza ... meh irrelevant to this discussion.

So let's say there is a technically fantastic cardio thoracic transplant surgeon that you refer to. And say she relocates, retires etc. the world will keep turning and invariably the void will be filled. My personal lesson in life is we are all replaceable and inevitably will be.

 

You might want to rephrase this statement or speak for yourself. As a human being, he is not superior to I or anyone else.
