With the prices for these old bangers going the way they are, I am becoming increasingly tempted to sell all mine and retire!
A few years ago, one would struggle to get £25000 for a solid K.
Now with prices possibly being £100,000 for a solid car, one wonders if there is really much latitude left for increases. Those two recent results were surprising as I had thought top prices were about £75000.

    Hi Paul, AMLC,

Yes Paul and some magazines are still hopelessly outdated, actually in a Paris train station newsstand I suddenly burst out "incompetent idiots" out loud confusing people around me when leafing through a really poor value guide for GT cars which still mentioned €22000 for a K!

AMLC many GT cars as you recall had such additional headlights fitted by their owners back in the days when you could really drive and usually after years they end up pivoting at odd angles sure signs of a neglected car. I do not think there is or was any law mandating how high or low they could be mounted.

    Best regards,

    Marc

Another one for sale and sold.

This advert for a white (US?) Khamsin automatic with 55000 km (miles?) is at mobile.de at the moment:

A very rare chance to Maserati's flagship model from the era, that's three times rarer than a Ghibli at only 430 produced. To many the most beautiful Gandini designed car.

    So it is original.

I remember seeing it first in a magazine (just checked, Classic & Sports Car, April 2001) and can understand that you like it!

    Hello AMLC and all,

At least 3 of the bidders came to the auction just for the Khamsin T-Top. flattering. I learned this after the sale when the others came to congratulate the new owner with his acquisition! It was their only reason to go through the effort to go and stay in Paris. Looking at what the car brought at least those 3 thought the conversion is contemporary, unique and were willing to pay a premium for it.

I am happy that the car went to a serious Germany based collector who has only special bodied cars in his collection that he plans to turn into a museum. Moreover he plans to drive the car regularly, and that is what Khamsins are made for!

For the rest the greedyness of the public to posess a classic car was and is sending the prices, even for very tatty cars, through the roof.
We have seen that before in the late eighties and early nineties. Let's how this one ends.
It makes me think of an old Rolling Stones song: You cannot always get what you want...

    Ciao,
    Bart

    Gents,

I'm re-installing the A/C compressor on my Khamsin.

Does anybody have experience / advice on how to align the compressor- and water pump shafts?

    Advices highly appreciated.

    Hi Carsten,

Send me your e-mail address, I have a nice write-up on the pump drive that was sent to me several years ago, but I can't post it here as I ran out of space.

    Best,

    Jack.

    Hello all,

Greetings from the Geneva Motor show. This car, AM120US1258, one and the same in your mentions: it is the same one, was already owned in 2007 by Mistral Dreams when they advertised it for €75000...according to all in the know including Adolfo Orsi the vendors are not actual car dealers, they never sell anything and no one knows them, they are always pricing themselves way ahead of the market, so think about their motives for a moment...:-(

Yes stay away....and do not take their asking price into account when assessing the market.

Here are a few photos from when it was in the US years ago in 1985 when owned by broker Steve Ahlgrim.

    Best regards,

    Marc

    Hi Ivan,

Of course: I had tried to do so quite a while ago, but it didn't work and I didn't bother. Tried again just now and it seems to have worked this time. Let's see!

    Best,

    Jack.

    Hello all,
Just returned home from the Historics at Brooklands auction where this car has a hammer price of £114,000.
The engine looked well, but as in the description "it must be noted that there are some areas of micro blistering; only noticeable on close inspection". You didn't have to get too close to see there must have been moisture in the airline when the re-spray was done. Evey panel had blisters on.

    numbers listed in the catalogue as;
    Chassis number 550210
    Engine number AM120-411
    estimate £75,000- £80,000

The car was purchase by a German person and it will be shipped out there.
He will confirm what the correct colour was with Maserati and refinish the car.
    Regards all,
    Richard

Richjar yes the body work needed a complete respray but tye car was structutally excellent. Did you speak to the buyer. Was he a dealer? There were two very serious buyers and it was probably the fastest sale of the day which made me think it was two professionals bidding but could be totally wrong. I was planning to bid but my limit was reached very quickly so I kept my hand down.

    Hello all,

I have been following this car since UK dealer Martin Chisholm sold it to the vendor in 2007. A vendor who barely drove it.

By the way I met Chisholm at the RM Maranello auction in May 2009 and he was still excited about how he had loved the car:)

I had an enthusiast and a dealer, both from the Uk obviously since this is a "wrong hand drive", contact me before the auction so a couple of weeks ago I asked Fabio Collina of Maserati Classiche what the colors were and he kindly dug up the details:

    Ciao Marc,
la vettura venne prodotta colore "Blue Ischia" con interni in pelle fungo.

    ...purtroppo non sarò a Ginevra.....

    Ciao e un abbraccio
    Fabio

It was delivered new in Blue ischia with pelle fungo (fungo means mushroom).

Both were bidding today but the current market blew the car up and away from their intended bids like leaves in the wind.

According to Andy Heywood of McGraths, the leading UK classic Maserati service and restoration facility and one of the top tech experts anywhere they worked on it a few years ago and it was not in the best of shapes...It is surprising that a German would buy a right hand drive car but there is already another RHD running around in Belgium...

Lots going on right now will report when I have a minute.

    Best regards,

    Marc

Agreed Mark. A German buying a RHD is odd. The euro is very weak at the moment so after factoring in transport and commission the price was EUR 175k+. After a repray, service and retrim you are looking at 210k+. The T top went for much less than this last month in Paris. So I'm struggling a bit with the price for an euro buyer but then again maybe I'm just disappointed to lose out.

On the car itself. It had a respray in 1991 at a local firm for about £4000. It also had new carpet at this time. The car was sold in 2007 for £22k (!) . the owner then spent about 10k at McGrath. After this it looks like the car wasn't driven or serviced at all.

    Hey Richard,

Hope you had a good day at Brooklands, sorry I couldn't make it. Interesting result for a Rhd K. I have to say though it makes no sense what these auctions are drumming up when you look at the way cars are presented. It was much the same at silverstone auctions at stoneleigh last month. How much of this is speculating rather than the real enthusiast...
