P1 owners say they're happy. that's all that matters to them. my personal opinion has always been that P1 should've been priced in the 600k range. It is after all a rebodied 12C with larger turbo's and a E-system tacked on.
they've no doubt been working hard gearing up, optimizing, for the upcoming tests - should they happen.
You guys know what the best part about this is? That even if the 918 loses at the top gear test, it will still have the most wins out of the three.
both... I hear Mac is trying to get slicks fitted and convince us all that they are 'optional' from the factory. jk
the car was predicted by 'experts' everywhere to be comfortably slower than the LaF and P1 on both road and race track. by any standard, Porsche has delivered a heck of a capable car.
Here's another one. 1-month ban. If you can't respectfully debate others and act like an adult, then stay out of the discussion.
Oh I know. And every time I go on YouTube or reddit and look at the older comments from months ago and see how everyone was saying the P1's DF and lower weight would murder the 918 on track, I just laugh at how wrong they were. but oddly enough, some of them still hold that belief (like our resident maclovers) that the P1 would be the only true king of this decade and that ferrari cheats and the porsche would be too slow. And how much evidence do we actually have that ferrari still cheats today? I honestly don't know why people even doubted porsche (I must confess that even i had a bit of paranoid doubt about if they sent a ringer to the laguna test after the way treynor made it sound at first, but I admit that was stupid), they are a racing company first and a car company second, they know how to make a car work properly (and it doesn't hurt that the fact their bosses are car people).
To be fair, to say they have upped the game on this car is massive understatement..... At the end of the day the 918 is made from the best materials for Job, and that's the difference.....
That is incorrect. Both the 918 and the P1 achieved their best laps on their third session out, after two tire pressure adjustments.
It's fairly simple. From the Mclaren pitch, i was expecting a game changer. And to be that, it would have to be faster than more tham .x of seconds than a 918. Think GTR vs 430. The difference is usually 3 or 4 sec per lap. That is a game changer. That is what i thought Ron Dennis was talking about. It's not. Still a very nice car (and beautiful in some specs!..no fanboyism here i say the same thing for the LF.).
well, yes, If you have to explain that your car is the quickest, despite the numbers, than something has gone horribly wrong. Even if your explanation holds up.
This has happened before/doing more with less from Porsche. I never doubted Porsche for one second........... CGT vs Enzo CGT down 45hp, weights slightly more, and had a stick instead of "F1" paddles. How could it possibly compete at all??? Ferrari Enzo, Porsche Carrera GT & Ford GT - Exotic Coupe Comparison - Motor Trend Page 6 It braked better, cornered harder and faster, within .1 over the quarter mile with a stick than its stiffest competition. This time around Ferrari will ban you if you lend a car to a mag for a head to head. I really want to know if it is that much quicker than the 918 but we may not find out. Its crazy Ferrari can actually control their customers like that. Or maybe its crazy the customers let Ferrari control them? Im confused. ANd.... Dear Mac, When companies as deep as Ferrari, Porsche put their all into a halo car, you cant just come at it with an "upgraded" 12-C with an unstreatable race mode/tires and hope that works. It was a bad idea to begin with and the only outcome was this. This was my feeling way before any test came to be. Just not a winning formula. You needed a bespoke 12cyl like the F1 of yore attached to the same electric unit you have in the P1. Or better yet because you would have been the only one, you should have dipped into your old Formula 1 bag and pulled out a 10cyl super high revver with the folks at AMG/Mercedes. If you could have captured more of the race heritage then you would have just NAILED IT. NO ONE WOULD HAVE CRITICIZED YOU FOR A MOVE LIKE THAT!! But you either cheeped out or wanted to go it alone on the engine building front which is amicable, but you needed a jewel in there and you ended up with kind of a polished turd......... Lipstick on a pig. In the end, that move will cost much more than the upfront cost of building a normally aspirated gem for your first ever halo car. Sorry, you really missed a great chance to shine as a young car manufacturer. I was rooting for you but the game plan was so off from day one.
I still say that at this HP level AWD is THE advantage and the LaFe will not be faster around a track
Indeed. I would propose that in fact the P1 *did* up the bar considerably compared to what existed when it was announced, and what Porsche said they were building -- a 795hp, 3900lb car. The thing was, in the interim Porsche changed their game too...
Could be also McLaren underestimated Porsche. Back then Porsche only set a min spec they will meet. McLaren didn't aim high enough with the P1 or that the 12C platform can only be maximized so much. Race mode helps with countering the higher Cg in the P1 because of the high mounted battery, but by lowering the car that much the platform's suspension geometry is out of whack and can't work properly. 12C platform's suspension geometry was designed for a car with the normal ride height, that's when it can provide the maximum amount of grip, lowering it by 50mm changes all the angles and that's probably the reason why you car even with grippier tires is not out gripping the 918 in the corners. McLaren is not dumb, they augmented the reduced mechanical grip with higher aero grip but there aren't too many corners in the world where the car can go fast enough to benefit from that.
It is truly amazing how this thread has developed on hearsay, assumptions and guesswork. Now factual tests are showing the real truth. And let's face it, we all expected the P1 to be a game changer. Even if it at some point proves to be faster on a track like Spa it is no longer a game changer. It is just one of three fantastic hyper cars. Let's face it all three are stunning and no one really expected the Porsche 918 to do so well. Well done Porsche. A HyperCar, a hybrid electric car with a meaningful electric range, a convertible, a luxury interior and one mean track day car all in one! To sell Porsche short is plain naive. The P1 is still a wonderful car. And saying that it is a souped up MP4 is just not correct. An incredible amount of engineering went into the P1. When you see the production line in Woking with the P1 next to a 650S you immediately see the massive difference. The Carbon fibre tub is very similar but everything else is not. Even the engine has been heavily modified to achieve the desired result. It's raw and very much a race car. When it goes into race mode you feel the whole car stiffening up and transforming to a track animal. One thing though. It is not clear for me why race mode is not for the road. The car does not bottom out on normal roads and the front overhang is by far less problematic than a Carrera GT or a 997 GT3 RS. Guess on secondary UK roads it may be a problem. Be sure the La Ferrari will put up a good performance. We will know when Top Gear finally does its test. Again the amount of engineering input that went into the LF is mind blowing. The layout of the combustion engine and the electrical engine and the way they function together is simply perfect. Relentless power. Not easy to achieve. Even though this is a Ferrari thread one has not gone into great detail on the technical merits of the LF. I remember over 10 years ago when I was convinced that the Carrera GT was faster than the Enzo due to its superior handling and Group C type suspension. Then when Sport Auto finally was able to do a test the Enzo was quicker. As a Sports car enthusiast I am very happy to be experiencing such fantastic cars that stir our emotions and reset the goalposts for future cars to come. May the fastest one of the three on the track that Top Gear chooses win, but does that make the runners up less desireable? Not for me anyway! So over to: Trofeo vs Corsa, Hotlap mode, Ron Dennis exaggerations, Ferrari will cheat etc!
IMHO power without traction is simply tire smoke. IMHO it is not possible to put down more than 750NM of torque with 2wd on street tires without too much TC. We have only 510 HP and 700NM of torque in our race version at 1250KG (street version is 1100 KG wet and has 650HP and 750NM of torque base but Race version's engine is restricted and minimum weight allowed is 1250KG so we add steel roll cage and ballast). At our latest test we entered the straight at 60mph and reached 180MPH before we had to brake. Our time is just about P1's and La's 60-180 with only 510 HP. Think about how these cars would be 1000LB lighter with 650HP that they could put down. We have met the enemy and he is us. The flag dropped, The bull**** continues but the fact is 918 beat P1 at Leguna and is shockingly fast around a race course and IMHO that is due to TRACTION. Carry On.
