I've wanted a 928 since I was a caddy at a local country club, got to park one during an evening event at the country club back in 1989. That was the last time I ever drove one. I'm thinking a 5 speed GTS. Can I find one? Would I like it at all? Is this a childhood thing and I should leave it alone? Any advice is appreciated.

I thought you just ordered a new Targa? (With a retro gearbox, sources say.)

Like many older cars now, condition is the wildcard.

However, as both an S4 and GTS (5spds), when properly sorted and maintained, 928s remain one of the great GT driving experiences, ever.

Can't recommend a GTS strongly enough, in my eyes the most appealing visually as well as the most exciting of the bunch. It doesn't hurt that it is a rare car, with only 400 ever imported to North America in all years ('93-'95)

I did. I've sold off quite a few cars and want to move back into Porsches. I had a 67 911S that I regret to this day selling and I've missed my 997 TTS ever since I traded it for a 430. I'm more of a Porsche guy. I just wonder if the 928 GTS is better left to my imagination or is it fun and worth owning for the sheer joy of it.

Either GT or GTS manual - great fun and superb engineering. Get ready for lots of admiring glances though.

Tell me you didn't sell the autographed silver GTO???

The big thing (or maybe I shoud say tiny thing) I see on all the old cars in the small and weak OEM brakes the manufacturers used. Modern cars have spoiled us in that respect...

True, probably nothing has improved as much over the years. I just put new (rebuilt OEM) calipers on the 308 and they seriously look like something off an '80s Scirocco.

Out of all the manufactures the best part of all Porsches is they have the best brakes of the era, may not be up too modern brakes. Still the best of the 80's and 90's. S4 to GTS, have excellent brakes.

Id copy me and decide to get the GTS. The 345hp makes it closer to being modern.

Yes the 928 brakes are quite superb compared to other same era cars.

Porsche left plenty on the table with the 928. The 5.4 litre GTS can easily get 400bhp with no serious mods or undue stress.

GTS brakes were massive Brembos for the era, still impressive stopping power today.

I let a few 911 skeptics, some with significant racing experience, drive the GTS and the brakes definitely impressed them. Of course the torque compared to 911's was what blew most of them away.

I'm looking for a great GT or manual GTS (unicorn, I know) for my own collection. I had a GT last year on consignment, and should have never sold that car.

That's a smart looking GTS William. Did you keep the standard pads in ? I've found them to be surprisingly good.

    ^^^^^^^

Thanks for the kind words, Beau! GTS recently has a new owner, but I get visitation, lol! As such, I can say that there are GTS 5 spds in great condition out there. If a buyer is serious, patient, and willing to pay a fair price they can be had. A great GTS is a 6 figure car.

OEM I am pretty sure, I will verify with my mechanic.

good to hear that you still retain visitation rights :) Yes a mint GTS is in the same bracket as a 550 Maranello in my view. My previous g/f actually preferred it, praising the aircraft-esq cockpit. It's understandable they will continue to rise in value and become rarer.

My DD standard brakes with SRF fluid hold up to all kinds of requests, including track days. Impressive for the era :)

The GTS has excellent brakes. Might be a little slow 0-60, by todays standards. Its really good 60 to 80 or 80 to 100. At highway speeds, its as good or better then some of todays cars. The interior is high quality and is even better then some modern cars.

I had a 88 S4 in 92/3 time frame. I tested a brand new at the time RX-7. It was a lot faster 0to60 and quarter mile. But on the highway, it was very unstable. Felt like if we had some wind, it would have taken off. 80/90 mph it was scary. The salesmen didn't believe my excuse. So we went for a drive in the 928. After he admitted over all the Porsche was better.

In 08 was thinking about getting a Vette. I was in my 85 928s 5spd. The Vette was o.k. at high speeds, 928 was more solid. The Vette also had better overall performance. This time, found the Vette to be poorly built. The seats are garbage. The doors don't close like a bank vault. After looking at my 928, the salesmen agreed on the overall quality of the 928 was light years better.

While in production the 928 was the definition of Porsche being no substitute.

    Great looking S4!

So Chad, I think a test drive is the next step. If you need to find a good one, come to SoCal and I will arrange it for you. Also, you can see how great that Larini has worked out on my BBi as well! :)

I kind of want one as well. It seems like it's really hard to find them in decent condition at all, and then manuals are even rarer.

I don't like the way the GTSs look, so in many ways I'd be more interested in an S or S4. I like the purity of that design.

s4 and GTS are the same look except for a flare in the rear quarters. You would need an '86 or earliuer for the smaller spoiler look.
