Did that guy have to adhere to emissions standards? Did that guy try to make the turbo as efficient as possible by not wasting exhaust gases energy? Did that guy fit an exhaust that conforms with EU sound regulations?

Listen to the Hennessey twin turbo 458 spider with 738 hp and pretty much the same performance numbers as the 488 and 650S. This is a real option for those that want to get more performance out of their 458. Cost listed at $60k. Best is that it is reversible.

The only concern is that the upgrade will dramatically shorten the life of the 458's engine,
the 488's power plant on the other hand was designed to accommodate the turbos from the outset.

    Concur as well.

I made my M3 sound awesome, but it isn't exactly legal.

I do think Ferrari should offer a "sport" exhaust option. Plus, they could make a ton of money on it. BMW got wise to this about 3 years ago and started offering their own louder exhausts to take some business away from the aftermarket.

Dramatically shorten the life perhaps, but like most exotics, it's irrelevant because a shorter life is still longer than they ever get driven.

Ferrari should just put engine sound through the speakers and let you enable it via infotainment if you desire. This way those that want to hear a 12 cylinder NA can and you won't know the difference. Many cars doing this already including BMW

Indeed many manufacturers do that. It's disgraceful.

The BMW i8 does it. A three cylinder car with electric motors just won't deliver a sound worth the $120K price tag.

It's a automobile version "auto tune" for today's pop stars. Can't sing but look sexy? No problem -- we have an app for that.

It's today's video game mentality. Anything goes today. The movie industry tossed it all in years ago with CGI animation. More blockbusters movies are made today in a computer on some guy's terminal in India than on a real set.

Fake carbon fiber, fake noises, fake fake.

What a sad period of car design we live in. Everything is "retro" and everything is fake.

BMW does this in the M3/M4 and M5 also. The difference is that the sound is of the engine, but is enhanced through the stereo. There are ways to disable it, although they require hacks I believe.

Not a fan either, but the sound is not fake per BMW, just enhanced.

Not true in many places...like Europe where people put big miles on Ferraris. Plus all heavily modified cars are not reliable in my experience. There is always something that needs a little attention or tuning.

    You are pretty close minded.

Depends on what the meaning of is is.

I knew a girl with enhanced boobies. Nice as they were, they were still "fake".

i agree with you on the hood scoop on lafe, i admit that it is after 2 years of careful observation, the least elegant part of the car and wish they would have done it differently ( and the next part for me would be the rear end treatment, especially the 't' shape structure with that license plate cut out..) but even with that grotesque design on the hood, the laferrari looks good. yes even from the ariel view when you can see those two big holes on the hood, the overall shape of the front of laferrari still looks very fluid with the overall design ( for those who complained about the lengthy overhang, they were mostly misled by the camera distortion), something that the side view of 488 doesn't have. the cut out shape around the scoop of 488 broke the underlying structure of the car hence the fluidity of the 458's form. i downloaded a bunch of 458 and 458 s photos side by side with the 488 and i keep seeing that broken form and messy side profile that i dont think i can quite swallow..

It's not like it's an audio track. It's actually sampling the engine noise in real time and amplifying it.

There are other systems which allow 100% synthetic noises. Like make your Subaru sound like a hemi fake.

Btw I have been told by experienced sources that it has been rather frequent that these 458 bolt-on turbos make the engine blow up, or reduce it's life to some 60 or so hours..

The 5 series F10 BMW is 100% fake. It's a digital sample that the sound system changes in pitch proportional to rpm and feeds it into the sound system. Through coding of the NBT module and sound generator you can choose to make it play a rolls Royce, 2 series, 7 series, each type of engine in each range etc. It is not connected to actual noise. I think the latest 3 series may use actual noise.

Can you give me a source? I've driven all the cars in question and also heard them inside and out at all relevant speeds. If it is 100% fake, it fooled me.

What I read is that the m3/m4 use a microphone and sample in real time. Sounds like the m5 is an overlaid track.

    Louder exhaust option...so much easier ; )

I can feel a difference, with the sound enabled, it reaches higher tones, especially in the first 3 gears. since we cannot hear higher gears in this link, I cannot speak for them.

But I can clearly hear the difference, u gotta click on 00:10 and listen to the first 3 gear changes, then immediately click on 00:25 which is when the other type starts and you will notice it.
