How much would you spend on maintaining a 2000 360 with 36K miles on it before you would feel its time to consider trading her in?? As the value of these cars is only about $60K, where is that point where it no longer makes sense to spend the heavy dollars for maintenance? Just wondering as I love my car but need to decide how much is worth spending at this point? As I intend to drive my car a lot this is a valid question as its not easy to find data on expected maintenance costs of these cars once the mileage is 40,000+.

If I had your car, I'd be willing to drop 10k on it to "get it right" in addition to whatever the normal annual maintenance is as long as you enjoy it and will keep it. At 20k I would hesitate and rather put the money towards a 430. Good luck.

Ps. I would consider fluids, clutch, brakes, tires part of normal maintenance and not part of the extra 10k.

How much "maintenance" does the car need?

Belts and fluids probably $3500-ish. And you're good for another 5 years and car is up to date. If it needs a clutch and belts and fluids and a host of other things, then its your call. I can't see how its going to be cost competitive with a price differential with a 430 quite frankly. $60k is a lower value car. If it needs all these things and is a tad beaten and an off color then yes it is a $60k car.

This is why used Ferrari's are so difficult to buy.

With his current mileage of 36k and if he keeps the car, mileage will be over 40k, so a 60k value on a 2000 360 is pretty reasonable. I doubt a dealer would offer much more than 60k right now, if not lower.

To the op, after putting 1,450 miles on my leased F430 I would trade up since decent F430 coupes are very close to 360 spider asking prices.

In my opinion if you are asking this question, start looking for a 430 before something expensive happens. I believe the 360 market is not yet at bottom.

This is exactly the reason more 360s are trickling down into the hands of the DIYers. The value of the car may fall, but cost of upkeep doesn't change so there is a diminishing return unless maintenance costs can be cut somehow.

For me I have an attachment to mine and I have been lucky enough to be able to do all maintenance and repairs myself so I'm keeping it and have no inkling to sell. But that's me.

Is there any other car on the market that does not have the same maintenance costs?

    I dont understand your question.

Take a M3 - a clutch on that will cost you equal if not more than your 360.

Tons of other cars. 996-997 clutch for example. I was quoted $2-3k for my 997. Parts prices done right on the 360 clutch cost that.

    M3? On what planet?

If I have a 2002 Modena, my clutch costs are as follows per ebay: clutch disk and pressure plate $1350-2500. 2002 M3: Clutch pressure plate and disc $500. If you do the work the parts prices are the same right? And I'm not including the $1000 in ricambi or other parts supplier for the support flange and bearing.

If M3 clutches cost the same as a 360... there would be a lot less used ones driving around.

"But I want to compare a 2012 BMW clutch replacement to a 1999 Modena". Apples to apples.

My previuos F430 needed 50K service + new clutch in a couple of thousand kilometers...I traded for a Scud + some more money added. Jump to a F430 and you'll forget your 360 as fast as a lightning.

Here in Switzerland 360 are now at 60k Swiss francs, F430 around 90K, Scud around 140K, does it make sense for you to spend 10K on a 360 when you can probably have a F430 by adding another 15-20k$?

Except that a $60k-360 plus $30k will NOT buy you a no-story 430 (at least here in the States). A late model low mileage 360 coupe or a spider is what you get for $90k here. I even see asking prices a bit over $100k for 360 spiders.

The airport parking in the ZRH airport had more Ferrari's per capita than any place I've ever parked! Not surprised... so many FCars...
