+1 Mark wiggles the valve(s) and the numbers get better... Blame the tool(s)...right Takes a week off Forum damage control The numbers miraculously fix themselves Button it up, April is coming, time to put the boat in the water. Your deadline has been met. Good for you, enjoy.
Well I posted videos of my tests because I knew there were one or two dip****s like yourself that wouldn't believe what I was seeing and were probably rooting for bad numbers for some reason. If you want to see for yourself stop over, I know you're somewhat local to me. It probably gets back to your belief that a hobbyist couldn't possibly figure this stuff out by researching and getting help from smart friends. Maybe it's a conspiracy and I have really good editing software that makes a gauge read different numbers...... I guess the drama continues.
Like I stated earlier Know your tool, same procedure each time I have leakdowns from way back till now and compression testers to go with it each are used for different situations. Night, day, hot, cold, high alltitude, rainy days, sunny, humid, dry, indoor, outdoors Glad you folks are on the right track now Drive that thing Image Unavailable, Please Login
Tim, do you want to sell want of those Sun units? I have been hunting hard for them with no luck as of yet
I'll add that I'm still troubled I get significantly different numbers between the two LD gauges and my tech friend does not like hearing the air coming through that valve, but we've concluded that it's best to drive it (sometimes hard) for one summer and test again next fall. I can still get the one gauge to read a bit lower when I press on that valve. On the OTC gauge I cannot. At full open, I can't feel any play in that valve. When guides fail, I'd guess you get bad numbers much of the way around and not on just one valve, but I have no idea. The compression numbers give me comfort. If I started with a compression test or with the OTC gauge this thread would have never started. I've done a whole bunch of reading at night the last week when I was off skiing with my kids and didn't find any documented cases of bad steel guides, especially on a 20,000 mile car. There's also a not too old post somewhere on this forum from Dave Helms also stating that he's never seen proof of steel guides failing. Hopefully we're done with this discussion.
Let me start with: you don't know me and you have no idea how I do my work and how many times I retest my results. The OP presented a set of numbers (with no supporting information) and asked for an opinion. I took those numbers to be reasonably accurate, compared them to a car I'm currently working on and described the work being done. I also showed the additional steps taken by me to prove that there actually was a problem and further identify just where it is. I conduct these tests several times, as the absolute last thing I want to do is make more work for myself by fixing things that aren't broken. I never recommended any specific course of action for the OP other than to gather more information. Of course tests need to be repeatable, even here under the "shade tree". This is social media and a lot of people claim to be experts that aren't. You get what you pay for here. I have considerable knowledge and experience yet NEVER claim to be an expert at anything. Even after seeing a lot in 61 years I still get new lessons all the time. Perhaps today's lesson from Professor johnk... is to share less information and wait for your learned assessment. You can kiss my ass.
Sorry no, I use them all and then some. I never tell what I really did which makes it more the fun here
He can pretty much kiss my ass too. He is not the only one that discussed this project on the phone. Just another anonymous a hole with a key board and internet access.
At lower test pressure if the valve can be manipulated to greatly effect the leakdown number than something is not right. (and he said this is repeatable). If the valve/seat/guide interface was all 100% correct you will never be able to push on the valve by hand and manipulate the leakdown number, so I will stick with my opinion that the heads should be rebuilt to be 100%. Now based on the compression test it will (and probably did) run completely fine, for now. That is unless you want to throw out those test results as well assuming he can't do a compression test correctly? (Or are we only tossing data we don't like??). Drop the condescending attitude.
I'll defend Brian and I don't think those comments were aimed at him....he took time to talk with me over the phone, advised me to do some further testing, and recommended a shop close to me that could do further work, if necessary. It's been a couple weeks but I don't recall Brian being focused solely on the valve guides.
Temporarily-banned user "gobble" circumventing his three-day ban by registering under a different username. Now banned permanently. I don't understand why someone would go and get themselves permabanned instead of just sitting out the three days.
Gobble is a good guy he makes us all key fobs. Now we all argue like children over compression gauges. Let it go guys it turns the forum into a war zone instead of a resource for our hobby Can someone come compression test my gts? I put a few quarts of motor honey in her for good measure we can do a before and after adding snake oil products. I want to see the numbers let's video it and make it a YouTube series. We can be famous. I have a lift and all tools but no cc and LD tester ( I never check my compression on any cars lol)
Yeah, probably just a lapse in judgment. I've reviewed the moderator logs on him and I'm changing his ban to two weeks instead.
Cool I think that's a good idea considering the contribution he provides us all. Thanks for reconsidering.
Well, Marks was not exactly correct. Call me an anonymous ***hole with internet access and a key board if you like. Ask me to kiss you ass. I won't. I won't stoop to profanity nor will I yield to bulling. An "armature" asked for an opinion on his data from the pros. You can all go back and read your responses. No one, at least early on, if at all, question the data. I didn't see any constructive responses. I don't think they are the same responses you would make to a client who showed up at you shop with the same data. Why? My comments have no reflection on whether anyone who posted is a good or bad mechanic or their knowledge. Rather, Tim, your comment just reinforced my position when you said, "This is social media and a lot of people claim to be experts that aren't. You get what you pay for here." And that was my point. And I sorry if the pros are upset, but I would have expected more. FChat should be more. If it's going to be a place where people can come and ask for assistance in solving a problem and receive responsible, thoughtful replies it has to be more.
I don't understand what's so confusing. Nor do I understand why you are misspelling amateur. Seems simple to me. If leakdown varies while you push on a valve, that is not correct and an indication of a problem. "you can hear air leaking out of the exhaust valve" If the guides/valves/seats have zero issues this is not happening! If you choose to ignore that and say it's fine because it leaks down better with more pressure or the compression test is fine, it's your right to do so. It doesn't however mean that the rest of us are wrong or giving bad advice.
I don't think you can condemn them (or anyone) based on the data provided. The initial test indicated a problem. Subsequent data led it to be questioned. What's missing here is a problem with the car. The leakdown test is a diagnostic tool, not a tool to determine whether there is a problem or not. If the car has no misfire, no oil burning, no loss of power, no loss of compression, ie no symptom or problem you are attempting to diagnose, then what are you diagnosing?
Wow. I leave for a few days.... Been to Gobble's house while he did my key fob. Great guy...he is just trying to get a car right and stepped out of line in what has grown into a very ugly thread. Glad it was changed to a two week ban. Second user is big no-no....but it was done in good faith to defend Brian. Why do so many threads in the 355 section lead to mass carnage anyway? Can't we all play nice?
Oh, you should see the epic battles that take place among the fourteen year-olds in the LaFerrari threads. You adult 355 people are tame by comparison.
So much baiting going on by folks here can make a good man snap There is so much more to life and I feel sad about their anger or need to fuel an ego. Peace all
All we need is the vin to seal this thread up...so everyone from ferrarichat knows he didn't do the valve job. Lmao just kidding.
He is a good guy and glad it was reconsidered. Part of the problem here is there is a troll that is following some of the professionals around and starting **** at every chance. One of us needs to go.
