Espada thread

Only if it were just a so so driver. But most S1s I've see are either in dire need of a lot of work or already restored. There's one getting a restoration now that didn't quite make Amelia unless a miracle happened.

 

Another Espada given away at auction. I wonder why Espada values in the USA are falling so far behind European Espada sale prices?

There's a nicely restored Espada S3 in the UK and the asking price is £165,000 ($240,000), while a friend paid £110,000 ($160,000) for a superb Espada S3 last year and has already turned down several significant offers from potential buyers.

All very strange..

 

Are you making a distinction between Europe [lhd] and UK [rhd] in this equation? Maybe the weakness of the euro has some bearing here...or maybe its just those side markers....

 

Both the cars I mentioned are RHD but both are S3 models, so the same as the Amelia car.

Then there was the Espada S3 sold at Retromobile Paris auction back in February, which fetched €183,500 inc. so way above what the Espada fetched at Goodings auction yesterday. I'm told the Goodings Espada was a better example too..

 

It could be an accumulation of things I suppose. The body looked great from the photos which they've now taken down ....

The interior isn't original in color selection and lacks any of the seat facing perforations.
I can see pronounced wrinkling in the driver's seat.
I think the engine may have needed more detailing but the engine compartment looked clean if perhaps a bit overly glossy?

WO being there to asses it all as a package it's hard to say for certain for me ...

It certainly wasn't a fastidiously prepared original looking example. It looked nice to me though?

Are the side marker lights THAT big of a deal?

And we have had a couple of Espadas sell here for more than twice that amount. One was a very nice, well done car I saw a lot of on a rally in Montana and the other was the glass roof Espada. I never saw that one after it was done over.

But didn't other cars like SOME perhaps not so rare Ferraris result in meeting only the lower end of the estimates at Amelia? I thought I saw discussions about this in the Ferrari sections.

 

In continental Europe, or in Germany at least, US specs are far less desired. With some classic cars the importers in the past even went all the way to "europize" a car, not only by replacement of the miles speedometer etc., but even including removal of the side markers and welding the apertures thereof. Not to speak of those impact bumpers.

Presently dealers are changing habits and claiming that originality of US cars, including e.g. the impact bumpers (looks most awful on the 70s Mercedes SL), is of higher priority than the looks and technical specs. However,I believe that this is rather due to the fact that it presently is very difficult to get hands on good European cars, in particular for dealers.

Bumpers, the big rubber ones, is one thing but side markers aren't THAT hard to fix if you feel you must.

Appears mostly there but gee, is there some money to be spent to get this thing up to speed. Looks like they lost interest in the fuel injection conversion early on but not so early as to keep the manifolds and carbs.

The garage Affolter told me that my Espada was used some time ago in an italian magazine. It took me quite a lot of time, but I managed to find it! It was used in the March 1999 issue of "Ruoteclassiche", which is the vintage car edition of the famous "Quattroruote". It is a fantastic 12 page article against the Maserati Indy.

The article is absolutely fascinating because unlike the vast majority of magazine out there, "Ruoteclassiche" actually test their cars and monitor their actual performance. They were using the same material as they used in "Quattroruote", and the tests were conducted in a very professional manner.


My actual car was measured at:
Top speed: 237.5 km/h

0-60 km/h: 3.4s
0-100 km/h: 7.5s
0-120 km/h: 10.1s
0-140 km/h: 13s
0-160 km/h: 17.5s
0-180 km/h: 22.3s
0-200 km/h: 30.4s

Standing 400m: 15.3 with a terminal speed of 146.5 km/h

I think that's quite impressive! Makes you wonder what it would do now, another 16 years later.

 

Is this now deemed a normal price? 70,000 USD for THIS äh "rough" car????

 

In our search for a project, we considered this. But in the end, this may be too high of a price to make sense.
Imo, that missing carb set up was a not cool.

My brother told me yesterday it would be ok to find the worst of the worst Espadas too.
Looking to turn a basketcase into concours.

 

I'd love to make such a test! It runs really strong. Unfortunately I don't have neither the place to do it nor the required equipment...

 

Oh to have such time and patience! I've done 1.5 restorations on an Espada, a full out-of-boxes ground-up that took seven years and a rolling mechanical-only resto that's in its fourth year. Got the Boy Scout badge and am done.

LOL and a doctor with a couch. We've gone through what it takes. That includes financial, time frame, frustration, patience. This more of a long term investment, enjoyment, and project.

Several sessions with a stern screamer of a dominatrix dressed in Italian leather, preferably senape, and dripping with olive oil might accomplish almost the same experiences and for a whole lot less money. I.E. the same advice given to smitten young men who want to get married.

Either way you will be screaming non più, non più at some point ... LOL

We most likely would not want to pay more than 60k. 20k-60k depending on condition/being complete.
I have been in the Lamborghini game a long time and am under no illusions of what it take. So, anything more for the car would not make sense.....currently.

The 2014 Lamborghini bubble has deflated some. It's just taking brokers/dealers/flippers to accept that I've excepted that with my Countach and Jarama. But my Urraco seems to be still strong and not dropping. So, places like Beverlt Hills selling those 3 for those prices are, well, not realistic. At least not to me. Maybe the green car is. Their car for 69k might be ok if they are willing to be flexible. But it is an S3. A great series, if that is what you are looking for. But not sure if the S3 is worth that. I know an S1 and S2 are.

As I said, a project is what we're looking for. So far the handful that have been presented to me are real nice cars. Most in driver condition and just not worthy enough for a full blown restoration. But I know the better the car, the better the restoration.....a little

 

Those are all pretty rough - lots of doll hairs required to bring those cars around.

Oh and an aqua verde - S3. Jeez, look at what someone did to that car!

Peter I'm as surprised as you are for the high prices for these cars but that one that sold at a local auction in California was a steal IMHO. I'm going to meet the guy who was a friend of the collection owner and rebuilt the carbs next time I'm in Lodi. I suspect he's going to say the same thing about that car. I believe Hollywood bought that and sold it after a quick clean up. I don't know what the sales price was but I believe the ask was 130K, which is a huge flip from the auction price of 83K. I wonder what they got?

Is that too nice of a car for you guys?
