95 Berlinetta Dyno. 2.7 vs the world! ;)

Ok, maybe not vs the world but I thought this car felt really strong. After doing the exhaust I wanted to verify that air/fuel was good and also equal on both banks (it was).

95B, 11k miles and oct 94 production date. Stock headers (for now), 200cel magnaflow cats, secondary cat delete, Capristo 2.

For some reason on this car and my previous F355 the ignition lead gets a lot of interference which results in spikes in the graph.

Speaking of which, my previous car was a 99 GTS, 22k miles, rebuilt original headers by QV, 200cel magnaflow cats, secondary cat delete, Quicksilver exhaust modified similar to Capristo (bypass flow divorced from primary flow).

The 99 was a great runner btw. Ran 13.2 @ 109mph in the 1/4.

Jim, was the same dyno used on both cars. That is a significant increase in power over the later car. Aren't you glad you bought a 95? My car was built in September 1994.

 

Yes it's the same Dynojet at the shop I work for. (and I ran them both myself).

And yes I'm pretty happy with the 95 right now

I also have the eproms that were supposed to be done by Tubi back in the day but I didn't want to try them without having someone check them out first. Considering how well it runs I may not even bother messing with it.

 

Is your 95 a euro as well? Mine pulls very hard too, the 99 was a different power band on my experience. wonder what difference if any is in the fuel maps or other setups.

 

very nice dyno run! looks like you did the pull in 5th.
I seem to recall reading somewhere that 5th was the correct gear for 355.
whereas usually it's 4th on most cars.

how are those magnaflow cats holding up?
I remember your other thread when you installed them.

when you say secondary cat delete, you deleted the y-pipe and capped off the bypass?

Thanks! Yes 5th gear for both cars as it's the closest we have to 1:1.

eproms, chips for the dual 2.7 ecu's. I have a pair that were supposed to be recalibrated by Tubi back in the day but I didn't try them.

are these chips available now.

No mine is originally a Canadian car. Air fuel ratio was pretty much the same as between both of my cars.

 

Yes they store the engine calibration. Timing/fueling/etc. They plug into the ecu's and are removable on 2.7 cars.

Tubi no longer makes them but other shops offer tuning for both 2.7 and 5.2 cars

 

Thanks for posting those. I dyno'd my Challenge car and it produced numbers similar to your 99 car on a Dynojet as well. There is another thread here where a member with a Challenge car dyno'd in the 290 range on a Dynojet and after some tuning at the shop got it up to around 320 rwhp. I asked what they played with and was told fuel and ignition timing.

My car has 360 Challenge headers (which have a larger diameter runners), no y pipe, high flow cats, straight pipes that x just before two custom mufflers. I would be curious to know how the exhausts play a part in power for these cars. Any idea's?

Erik, it seems as if your dyno pulls were a bit short on rpm. Either way, to flatten out like that I'm wondering if you verified the bypass valve is opening?

Edit- I just saw your post detailing the exhaust setup. What cats? It certainly could be good with the right parts and no y pipe but I would test backpressure to verify

 

Yeah your exhaust is working for sure

Loose that single bypass valve and really see something, you will need to fatten the mixture up for sure and dial in more timing

A guy on ebay has aftermarket ones for $130 that are the correct ID mm size
I have one left but he has dozens

 

To be honest I pulled out at the top end because I was nervous at that high wheel speed. LOL

I will have to check the cats and report back on what they are. I also might swap in a full straight pipe system just to see what the differences are.

On another note, I'm going to Monterey in August for the FCA meet. Any shops nearby that have experience with Challenge cars that I could visit with mine?

what year is your car?

 

Why is the torque figure so high? I've never seen a 355 with more than about 225-230lbs torque on a dynojet

 

Not sure. 245 was just putting a cursor on the graph but it was actually a little higher (unfortunately there was interference causing a spike right at peak tq).

It made 277.37hp at 5920rpm, calculated back that's 246.07 ft/lbs.

 

The interference is caused by spark plug wire cross talk and heat. Your engines run hotter and those pesky wires are all snugged up in the valve cover channels. Have your tech do it observationally. We use a guy with a Dynapak and it seems to work fine. Yes, 4th gear in the 355's, but the F1's have a different gear set, I remember.

Chip programming for 355's is tricky since there is only a single year for Motronic 2.7's. Well, more if you include the Challenge cars. Those are the chips I'd use. Get someone to burn you a set of Challenge chips. That's 355 Challenge, not 348, in case you were wondering.

You should be able to generate over 400 HP gross adjusted with your mods. Depending on the dyno this would be about 340 on a Dynapak and maybe 305-320 on a Dynojet, but I need to check that. The 2 systems measure very differently, hence the variation. Dynapak is a hub dyno, Dynojet is wheels on the barrel type, which I think is too variable. The Dynapak has software that adjusts for the gear ratios - you just key in the model and it plugs the right numbers in.

Regardless, don't get hung up with the absolute numbers. They are highly variable. You are more concerned with the differences between your base run and successive runs as you modify.

 

Vince, I'm the one who ran the dyno. It's at the shop I work for. Not sure what you mean by do it observationally.

I had the rpm lead on the plug wire itself but we also have a primary ignition lead that can go on the trigger wire to the coil. These were all inside the harness casing so I didn't explore that option any further.

I thought Challenge cars had the same calibration as the street cars? Either way I would like to have the spare set I have checked out by someone first. I have a pm to No Doubt to see if he still does this.
