Hey all. We just picked up a 81' black 308 with 43k miles in R.I for 23grand. You may have seen the C list post. It's a pretty decent car. Going to do cam belts as it came with the kit as last belt was in 08' and about a couple hundered miles ago. Anything else I should be checking? I am very familiar in the 911 world, especially the 964 model. So this is VERY new to me. Advise would be very helpful. The car was bought in a whim, came
With some service records, books and tools. many guys were offering much more money hearing he already had a buyer, but the seller was a man of his word as I hit him early and begged to see it first. Seems like a good deal for the money. Any advice appreciated. Guess I will also become a paying member in a few minutes.

Do your belts and just give it a good look over.

You can deal with the rest on a as needed bases if you want to just drive it and have fun.

Killer.... Do Belts/Tensioner Bearings, oil change, check gear oil, brake fluid flush, and drive the snot out of it. Likely the water pump needs rebuilding (seals) based on time + lack of mileage, so might as well do that while you're doing belts for good measure. Otherwise, congrats and ENJOY!

    Welcome to Fchat...

I would replace water pump belt, Alt. belt, and AC belt too as well as coolant and gear oil. Cam seals and shift shaft seals might need replacing but you just have to inspect. When you do the front bank for T-belt, you're going to need to remove the AC compressor and inspect the cam pulleys for damage or crack as they are made of plastic, hopefully all is good. Make sure you order the new design Hill Engineering tensioner bearings, look inside the distributor cap to see if the oil seal is not leaking inside the caps.

Ferrari of NE (dealer) did water pump and bearings last year. I am going to do the belts myself as I can turn a wrench. (Have dumped plenty of 964 motors and worked on cars my whole life, two Bend Pak lifts etc.) just wondering if when buying this after two min look I may of missed something. It really does appear as a solid car. I feel 23k was a good deal. Also, I smell a little coolant smell, seems to be coming from that metal tank. I am guessing with age those are failing. Anyways the BBS (real 2 or three piece) wheels are leaving. Want stock look. Maybe aftermarket 16 replicas? I will attempt to post pics. Says I missing security token for pics. Same **** as Rennlist, but different site from Iphone. I will try later from MacBook .

The tips are wrong, I don't really mind. The pic thing on this is maddening. Bear with me. Drivers seat and partial pass seat leather are new. Not else to report. Weird whistle when revved up. Put a rag over pipes, appeares to be exhaust, Prob the tips?

I know its a bit late but the buyers guide and other useful threads section at the top should provide you some background reading and then just remembering that almost every question has been asked before so there is probably an answer already here

I bet you are just a little sore about my mention of ugly ass fender badges cause you have a pair? Ha

Hey Greg congrats on the new 308!

Wanna sell one of those 964's? Black looks fantastic. I've been looking for a c2 manual for awhile... No luck

Missing my 930 which I sold 2 years ago.

Nice looking car. I would highly suggest taking a look at all fuel and vapor lines as they are likely coming up on 35 years old, and were never intended for ethanol. Many 308's have been lost due to leaking fuel, and it is not too terrible of a job to just replace them.

welcome to the group. the whistle you hear is pretty normal. the exhaust tips resonate and make a whilstly sound - you can eliminate that by sealing off the perforated part of the tips by using a cut metal sleve that is a bit bigger than the ehaust opening - just tap it in to each tip, and the whilstle will go away

coolant smell - from the catch tank - could be corrosion and or leaking hoses - check the micro switch terminal for leaks under the tank. I've seen them repaired - welded - or get a new one. I have a black 328 so love the color!

Congrats! We also bought my first Ferrari a number of months ago and are coming from the Porsche world. Now the Italian keeps the Germans company in the garage. No fights yet.

I'm still learning my way around the car with a wrench, but so far it doesn't seem too bad.
