-the Swiss car earns major demerits for the painted bottom skirts and silly scuderia shield. -pretty much every TR for sale needs the major service. -Testarossa's will be $250k cars in a few years as the styling graduates from being perceived as dated to classic. They made 7k of these cars. That's a big factor in pricing. The made almost 2k countach's vs 7k Testarossa's..... that's why.
I'm sure that has an effect but I wonder how much. A Jalpa has 1/4 of Countach production and isn't worth anything like - and compared to a 308 with 12,000 made yet still only worth the same. I think it's also a lot to do with the era. The Countach was made earlier than the Testarossa so it's kindof had a double jump as it's seen as a 70's car and an 80's car, so grabbed both generations. That could means in a few years things could favour the Testarossa more as it's seen as an 80's and a 90's car.... I might be completely wrong ofc, just the way I see it! Dom.
I think general knolage of Testarossa will counter numbers; yes, many unit's where made, but name is so well known that our local Ferrari dealer told me that people still call's in asking "what is latest Testarossa model and how much is it?" Also, compare to Montezemolo cars that all seems to be front engine, Testarossa has same basic layout as Lamborghini; mid engine and that is something that is very diffrent. Testarossa is also last non computer car. I also think looks of the car is so diffrent that it will hold great in time.
good point about countach's being both a 70,s and 80,s car..... the first generation countach's are so nice looking.... A much better look then the later winged cars. Plus the countach's design is much more outrageous than the Testarossa. check this out: http://youtu.be/IqlLfAtGD3s
Well said Dom. This is exactly what I feel and I would have bought one years ago if I could have, not because they were cheap but because they were and still are the ultimate supercars to me! Fortunately I grabbed my TR about 8 months back just as things were getting hot. Regards, Demetri Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Looks like it's the one advertised by Amari today...for £110,995... 1988 (E) FERRARI Testarossa For Sale in Preston - Amari Super Cars GB David
Well spotted! What did they do for their circa 22k gross profit on offer price? They didn't even rewrite the auction catalogue much. I guess they take the risk on a warranty?
Yeah I noticed that too. TBH I thought the opposite - that it`s not an extortionate profit by todays standards. Don`t get me wrong I know it`s a good profit even if it went for 105k - but I`ve seen plenty of cars over the past couple of years sell at auction and go on a dealer`s site at double the auction price! Nice way to make a living though! Dom
Looks like they have used a different car for the photos - with a black dash. I guess they have not picked it up from the auction yet. The description is certainly of the auctioned car and it was confirmed on Twitter that Amari made the winning bid (Harry Metcalfe of Evo fame and this forum saw them bidding). David
Don't get me wrong, I don't begrudge them their profit. They have to make a living, and they will make less out of it than Ferrari make on a slice of carbon fibre for the doorsill of your new 488. But slapping it online next day just doesn't feel like much 'value add'. Would like to hear what any traders here think. Maybe I am talking rubbish.
I think they mentioned the mileage in miles at the auction - ie. 27,000 miles. Yeah I know what you mean Darius - you would think it would take a week or two to check the car over and do any bits and pieces. There again it did say it had a major service within the last 1,000 miles - so maybe it was already in top shape for the auction. Still it would surely sell better if the lower sill areas and lower front fender were returned back to original black. It`s one of the things that gives the original 80`s version it`s classic look. Dom.
The Domani Motors white TR is back on Ebay. It now has the original wheels, wing is removed, chrome on the rear vents is gone, most of the cavilino stickers are gone and the price has been reduced to $129K from $149k. I'm willing to bet some one over there has been reading this thread or they came to the same conclusions......'stock rocks'! I actually like the custom red side panels and seats. I would ditch the custom steering wheel, paint the side strake supports back to black and paint the front spoiler/sides back to black. $400 in materials (majority being the steering wheel) and this car could sell for near asking if it checks out mechanically. It still looks like there is a polarizing of available cars. One pool is uber low mile cars and the other pool is 'higher' mileage cars IE 30k+ miles. And just to clarify, I personally dont consider 30k high miles. The 10-25k mile cars are slim pickins. Im really surprised that more of the US cars aren't being loaded on containers and heading over to Europe. They might be but I dont follow that sort of thing.
In my opinion, the US stuff isn't coming over because all of the ugly Federaisation, silly seat belts, Cats etc - That said, the Swiss cars which are appearing in the UK are presumably fitted with Cats, and they are appearing and selling. What is happening is some truly horrible Japanese stuff being shipped and flipped Used 1989 FERRARI TESTAROSSA 5.0 2dr for sale in West Yorkshire | Pistonheads Granted, they have removed the really offensive graphics it went to auction with, but I believe this went through sub £40K abut a month ago. I hate to imagine the state of the differentials on thes "Fast and Furious" monstrosities given the Japanese penchant for Drifting!! Will try and dig up the original photos
Found it!! http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/boxers-tr-m/476836-koenig-tr.html#post143713991 So that is a Circa £30K markup on UK landed price - Maybe Amari arent being so greedy after all!!
Not sure whether it's been discussed yet, but do we think there will be another leap in prices when/if china opens it's doors to the use of classic cars?
of course : YES in china some people have so much money and don´t know what to do with this because there it is no the possibility to buy just now. I know some chinese that have some high class cars in europe, registered to a sister factory from china. when china will pen it will happen the same as the time the 2 german states came together: the prices will raise disproportionately for the forst 6 month and then will go down again, but still about 20 % higher then before the bubble starts. I remember the german reunification when you got for absolutely junk cars, worth not even 500 german marks more than 4000 in some cases.
'If' is the big question. Importing things like autos is heavily regulated. There is also a culture issue as mainland Chinese view new to be the best. Chinese dont commonly hold vintage and classics with the same revere as we do. They are considered old and used. Thats the view point I have gathered living in Asia in the past. In Southern California, there is an underground car culture for students of wealthy Chinese. They drive the latest Aventadors or 458's....and a Mercedes C class to keep a low profile at University.
Its interesting living out in the East now as i do, that i see the attitudes and tastes evolving towards a more positive view of the classic car market. If the legislation changes, and its been suggested for some time that it will, then we may well see an exodus of the best examples to China.....prices would accelerate , through the roof $300k 308's , $1m Dinos, $600k TR's?? Who knows, but judging by the art , property and fine wine markets, quite possible......
Same thing here at Michigan State University. These chinese nationals are riding around in insane stuff. Just insane.
I have the same perspective and agree with lear60man. There isn't much love for old or used "stuff" in general. What we cherish as "Antiques" is old used goods to many Asian eyes. Buying an old used car is like saying you want to buy some old used shoes...not impressive at all.
This is certainly true. But the question is, will it change? Sophisticated mainland Chinese fell out of love with Chateau Lafite (the obvious wine) and started buying Burgundy very rapidly. Luxe brands will tell you sales of obviously logoed product (LV, Chanel etc) are suddenly down. Will a handful of opinion formers spread the word that a 40 year old Ferrari can be 10 times the price of a new one? Won't take many converts to move the market. Or is the anti old culture too ingrained? And then there's the law about no second hand cars allowed to be imported. And no collective memory of these cars from when they were young. But if Mainlanders in North America start buying Testarossas...
I think it will change IF, IF, IF the government eases up on the importation of used cars. Like every body else, the Chinese love good investments. Right now it seems like real estate and classics are a good place to park money. IF it does happen, it will be slowly IE low import duties for cars not to be driven on the open roads. This will open up the market to investors who dont want to store their investments out of country. Once the door is cracked open.....Thats when I think the flood gates will open. The only thing in the way is they dont have the same level of car culture mentality as the rest of the world. I really dont think they care if its a Monet or a California Spyder, if it goes up in value, the demand is there. India is a market that I would like to know more about.
Seems very hard to predict how the Chinese will react... I would have thought that the richest Chinese will slowly want to rid themselves of their world upstart status and buy themselves some old world class. Buying old Ferraris would be a good way of showing their neighbours that they live their lives on a more rarified plane, in alignment with the values of the old world. Something like that. And then, the Chinese on the next rung down will want to immitate the first movers and get themselves some old world chic too. Driving around in their old Ferraris will show their fellow Chinese that they have old world taste. I could easily be totally wrong though...
