I have seen used cars that had repaired damages, but still that had clean carfax reports. Many, many, "false negative" reports (i.e., damage that was not reported). There is no law, regulation, etc., that states damage must be reported to them, and most good repair shops do NOT report it. CarFax has done a great job marketing and making giving the FALSE impression that if a car has been damaged then it will show up on the CarFax, which is FALSE. It is not a be-all-end-all, but IMO, you should check the CarFax just as another easy, cheap auxiliary in addition to your other due diligence.

Caveat Emptor: I would not stray much from the Big 3 of car condition reporting. There are a number of scammers out there that will (1) provide you with an entirely bogus report showing no problems with a subject car, (2) ding your credit card in following months with a "subscription" you somehow agreed to in terms and conditions hidden deep elsewhere in their web site, (4) subscriptions to other valuable useless information from their "partners", and (5) avoid consumer attempts to cancel unwanted subscriptions. About the only recourse is to get your credit card company to back charge the scammers and give you a new credit card number.

Gotcha.....the ole bait-and-switch job by Carfax...

 

I have information and history on some cars in my database that can't and won't be found on/with any other Website/entity. With that said, I am not cheap, and usually require reciprocity in addition to a fee.
