Take five seconds and open your owners manual or look in the spare parts catalog. They are listed right there. Doesnt get much easier than that.

I am a real loss to understand how most of this applies to what I said.

Here is a picture of a correct original tool kit for an early carb car. Notice the carb tool, two piece spark plug tool, no combo wrench.

Prove me wrong instead of making a blatant statement and presenting it as fact.

    *sigh*

I've been with my car since day one with an unbroken tenure. What you are telling me is that the tool kit delivered with the car by Ferrari is incorrect.

Next week I will make a special trip just to take photos of that identical original tool roll.

I think that you will find that you have the same one that I have pictured here. As was suggested, if you look in a repair parts manual it should be the same one, unless it's not original for some reason.

Again, I suggested you go look in your owners manual. What more proof do you need?

Did you say bought a vetro 308 in 1978?

Here is what my owner's manual says for my 1982 308 GTB:

    Socket spanner
    Open ended spanner 6-22 mm
    Pliers 180 mm long
Screwdriver - American type 120 mm. long
Screwdriver American type 150 mm. long
Philips screwdriver up to 4 mm. dia.
    Philips screwdriver 5 - 9 mm dia.
    Sparking plug spanner

    Lifting jack
    Wheels removing spanner
    Alternator belt
    Air conditioner compressor control belt
    Air pumps control belts
    Set of fuses
    Set of bulbs
    Sparking plugs

Not really as detailed as I would like, honestly. No information to enlighten the endless debates here regarding whether I should have the rather cheap tube-type spark plug wrench that I do, or whether the "U-Joint" wrench extension that came in some kits is actually correct. I believe that my "Polytools / Italy" wrenches are correct for this year, based on information I have found elsewhere on F-Chat. I also believe that my translucent orange handled screwdrivers are correct for this year.

So, does a concours judge just look at the above list from the owner's manual and check off that a given tool kit has tools that match that description - more or less? If a set of pliers appears to be the wider-handled insulated type that I've been given to understand is more appropriate to a 328 kit, does he lose points? Nobody seems to agree here on F-Chat when the handle color on the screwdrivers changed from orange to deep red to black, or when the screwdrivers began being embossed with "Ferrari" script.

There is another thread in which a buyer expresses disappointment with his purchase of a reissue tool kit; it seems that the handles do not all match on the screwdrivers. Is this still acceptable to a concours judge, if the screwdrivers still match the length and diameter specifications in the owner's manual, or does this owner lose points for having a kit that is obviously a reissue?

I've heard firsthand from judges that a "reasonable facsimile" is acceptable. Brian, you seem to be saying that at a "real" Ferrari concours, judges would be much more particular than that. I'm not trying to pick a fight, just seeking information regarding the required level of specificity within tool kits.

It looks to me like you have the same tool kit as 4Right posted, minus the "two-piece" (U-Joint?) spark plug tool.

I do wonder about the yellow-handled pliers, though. I've never seen those before, but my owner's manual does not specify color. I suppose it's right, if the length is correct. (?)

Interestingly, I also see that you have both an emergency window crank and an oil filter wrench, neither of which was in my tool kit when I bought my 308, and neither of which is specified in the owner's manual. I guess 1982 model cars didn't come with them.

Comparing my screwdrivers (left) with the ones from Scott (right), I would say they are identical. So it seems that it WAS possible to have a set of four srewdrivers with mixed handles in one tool roll at a certain time. Like in this case, three with a flat top and one with a rounded top. I assume that it was simply a question of supply, and when the stock of identical screwdrivers had ended, a similar one was ordered from the (cheapest?) supplier. It certainly was not important for Ferrari to have screwdrivers with identical handles in the tool rolls from the first 308 GTB until the last one built.

Wishful thinking, the screwdrivers would have all matched.

And this notion or observation is based on what exactly? I don't agree....

Based on the observation that Scotty and me have screwdrivers with mixed handles in our tool rolls. Which seem to be identical, from what I can see on the small pic.

Anyone with a similar "mix" of screwdriver handles?

My late father bought what is now my 308 GTB in brand new in May 1978. It was built October 1977 from memory.

I haven't checked my handbook; but given it has hand written Italian "English" annotations concerning details particular to the Australian models, I wouldn't place a lot of faith in anything much printed being the last word in accuracy.
If my car was without a shadow of a doubt delivered with an identical tool roll to the one bought through official spare parts I think it is ridiculous to suggest it to be anything other than correct for a late production vetroresina car.

    I concur.

And, after awhile the T handle might get stuck making it a ONE part plug wrench!!

With escalting values I am not about to hit it with a hammer, I just leave it assembled...

Hi, Tex! I wondered how long it would be before our resident expert on 308 tool rolls chimed in here.

Given Ferrari's history of temporarily substituting whatever was on hand when stock ran out how sure can we be that tool roll spec was consistent?

    O.k., I stand corrected.

Just for a moment I had forgotten that you were the guy who assembled all those tool rolls in Maranello from 1975 to 1980.

Ok guys, if we accept that maybe at some point some tool rolls had different screwdriver handles in their set, and that as we also know many early cars 76-77, had in fact matching screwdriver sets, I think we can probably safely deduce that originally at least there was one type of screwdriver style, but that maybe the supplier at some point, for what ever reason, stopped making them and had to make due with a different handle screwdriver, so the guys at Ferrari for a time had to stick in the tool roll whatever they had available. If we accept this hypothesis, and say it happened to me I'm sorry but I would not be happy and would not just say that's how Ferrari worked. To me at least, now it is clear they came matching originally, and so I would try to get it as it should have been not what I was given-which was a blip in the screwdriver production. They certainly also had them matching later on in the eighties with different screwdrivers. if anything it just looks wrong. I know I know its pedantic but we've thrown up threads and wasted words for other pedantic matters so why not this as well.....?

I suggest we postpone any further discussions about your car or tool roll until you take a look at both of them to ensure what you actually have, both car and tool roll.

I went back last night and checked ALL of my rolls, from the 76-77 cars...the "round end" odd amber screwdriver is indeed consistent in ALL of them!

    For whatever that proves!
