We had a great weekend. I was very happy with the speed of the cars in Qualifying and that we've secured a place in the Top 30 Shootout for the 24 Hour Race which was our main goal. The Organizers did a great job to ensure safety for all and I'm glad they're open to tweaking the new rules so that the teams can race safety and put on a good show. I'm disappointed that we had an Electrical wiring problem in Car 2 and really thank Bosch and Audi for trying so hard to help us. Car 1 ran very well during the race and we moved up to P2 from Q6 when once again we were Flagged for being too loud. We had made pre race changes but more were needed so we pitted and fit even bigger mufflers. We lost a lot of time and went back out at P62. We fought back to finish 13 OA/1 in Class and finished the 6 Hours without any mechanical issues. We have a lot of work to do before the 24 but remain extremely hopeful that both cars will have a great 24.

Any hope of guaranteeing that the organizers are appeased re: noise before the 24? I don't know the ins and outs completely, but it seems a shame that they don't address those issues pre-race. Would hate for that to be an issue again in the big one.

Good luck! She does seem like a monster, indeed...

After we came in and added more mufflers we finished the 6 hour under the limit so now we have to build a system that muffles to that level and lasts 24 which we think we can. A lot of cars were flagged for noise so everyone's a bit unhappy. We figured out wiring issue, will run loom and sensors further away from heat and fix the next problem.

    Step by step...

In general keep the wiring away from anything that heavily switches current. A switching supply can be a huge source of noise and errors in a system...

Hi Jim, great spread in R&T.

In the cockpit photo, I noticed a transponder in the photo mounted on the roll cage/dash drivers side at the time of the photo shoot.

The transponder looked very similar or the same as the timing transponders we use at the various road race courses here in the states. Typically we mount those very low and near the front of the car because the track timing antenna loop is lying in a groove in the concrete.

Is that the permanent location for the transponder? Same unit and location as raced? Or do you guys have your own transponder system for testing days?

That is our transponder. We also have several required for the Ring. All are mounted where the regulators want them. They seem to work. I don't think the Ring has an in ground antenna.

    "THANKS AUDI"

Our second car suffered from a technical problem that fried the ECU.

AUDI Ingolstadt graciously got us another ECU so we could attempt to race. Unfortunately the problem was caused by shorted wiring and Car Two had to pull out anyways but we are very grateful to Audi for the help.

I don't understand why is the 'Ring record thing still being relayed by all automotive news sites when you cleared up yourself (SGC Facebook at least) that this was:

    1. Race car, not street car so not production car, not street legal, etc.
    2. Part of a racing/qualifying lap of the full track (not a NS lap)
    3. HP restricted and weight ballast but slick tires

Fine that everything is looking good for a possible actual record with street version and all, but all this new-record fuss about basically nothing???

Zonda's "6:47 Record" wasn't on a road legal car or road legal tires either.

There are no "Official" NS records certified by a real timing authority.

    There never have been.

The distances timed on the NS are different for different people and magazines.

I was VERY clear about exactly what our time was, where it was timed and what condition the car was in when it was timed. My estimate of a 6:42 NS time was based on verifiable published timing by race authorities and telemetry but was clearly stated in writing immediately as an estimate. Many news sources read my statement and in their sole discretion decided what to say. I simply posted about what happened during VLN 1 Qualifying and what I thought that meant. The press took it from there.

As I said I think with road HP which is higher than race HP, Road weight which is lower than race weight and very good Dunlop bespoke road legal tires we would "kiss 6:30 on The NS" with a road legal version of SGC 003.

I still believe that is true but as I also said due to the speed limits on the NS imposed after the fatal accident in VLN 1 all Ring "Records" will be 30s higher and the days of a new lower one being set may be over for ever.

So you kind of agree that the press are on their own here. Thanks, I really thought I was missing something! :)

Fun fact is half of the internet believes you're the new King of the Ring so... enjoy, I guess!

Congratulations on your ongoing achievements with SCG saga.

How can the ECU be the same as an Audi?

Or are we not talking engine ECU?

We both use Bosch engine management ECU's and dash boards. We both have different programing and use different features but an Audi ECU can be reprogramed with our programing to work in our car and after the wiring issue fried our ECU, Audi lent us an ECU which we reprogramed and raced the 6 hour with in car one. As car two had a wiring issue since identified and fixed the second ecu from Audi was also fried by car two so we fried 3 and have to give them back two working ones as well as get a new ones for our cars.
