I say they did not, no one has monkeyed with my rolls and they came from 20405, 22641, and 22127.

Or in one case, from a destroyed Canadian 1977 car.

Very interesting! Different colored bulb pots, different colored jacks. . . Not sure if all the belts are identical from looking at the picture, but I would hope so.

There is a fairly well-known story that I've heard and seen written in a number of places: Seems some guys were on the Concours arguing about the "correct" yellow paint in the engine bay of a 308, as one car had a different shade than the rest. Finally a guy said, "I worked for Ferrari. We just used whatever paint we had around."

Okay, I wasn't there to hear the conversation. It may be a myth. But I still wonder if the Concours judges are really going to deduct points if a guy has, say, Polytools wrenches in a carbureted 308. For all any of us really know, it could have been original to that particular car.

    Alan,

The first one, with the black jack and the rubber on the handle of the wrench, looks very "1985-1986 Ferrari 328" to me....

Now that you mention it, I previously thought that the 308's had the yellow jacks and that 328's had the black ones. However, from what I know, the tool bags all appear to be correct for a 308.

Well, even the ratchet on Alan's first picture (gold metal with black on the handle) is identical to the one I have in both my '89 328 jack rolls...so I would really not be surprised if...ah, but what do I know?

I have road hazard reflectors in my 87. How in the world does that black rubber strap unfasten? (or maybe it doesn't). I need 3 8" amber screwdrivers, 2 flat, one phillips

It looks very familiar. I suspect it's also identical to what I have for my Alfa 166 (from 2001).

Right, you note on the black jack the thumb wheel rides the jack hex and not the tool as the earlier ones did...

Well, on the belts, the ONLY belt on an early carbed car, once the air pump belts (tw small ones) "fall off" is the water pump/alternator belt.

IF the car has air conditioning, that would make two..so the proper belt set (early) is 2 pumps, 1 alternator, 1 A/C = 4 total.

The only one that burns off is the alternator, when the water pump seizes.
I keep five or six of that one...

As discussed in this thread, if you ordered "308 tools" from someone like FerrariUK Classic Parts you would likely get a current superseeded part number for the application.

It would have the modern screwdrivers, and such.

Really, really much more enjoyable than threads about value...
I wonder when we will be ready to publish an autoritative: "the complete book about Ferrari 308/328 tool rolls?"

As the cars break thru the $200K ceiling!

    LOL!

I just thought the "round back" screwdriver was an interesting find....never really noticed that, before now.

The Alfa 166 jack from my 2001 car looks like it came from the same supplier. The only difference to the jack, afaics, is the addition of a guard plate, mounting bump and slightly changed base. The ratchet spanner & handle are identical.

Any chance of some pics of the screwdrivers when removed from the tool roll?

I have a few observations from seeing a host of pics on this forum and others:

    1) The measurements quoted for the flat-head screwdrivers in the owner's manual are way off, surely? The 'small' screwdrivers (Philips and flat-head) I've seen appear to be 205mm end-to-end, and approx 125mm if you just measure the metal shaft. The large Philips I have seen is approx 225mm total length. Does that tally with other kits?

    2) Despite the statement in the owner's manual, are the two flat-head screwdrivers in fact the same total length (say 205mm each), but different widths of blade at the ends?...

    3) ...Or is the 'small' flat-head screwdriver indeed a 'short' one, which is approx 185mm total length with approx 103mm shaft.

Anyone have any comments based on actual or supposedly original tool rolls that they either own or have inspected?

    Ed

OK, here's another observation while I'm at it...

On some tool rolls, it appears that the fifth screwdriver pocket from the left (ie, the one that should fit the 13/12 size wrench) is actually too small to accommodate this tool.

Most tool rolls appear to have what I assume is the 'correct' pocket sizes, which is to say that as you go from left to right, they gradually decrease along with the size of the wrenches.

However, there is also clearly a design that has this very narrow fifth wrench pocket. This is not something unique to modern repros. Some rolls that are certainly original also have this odd feature (a machine mistake that stitched it too close?).

Any insight from the experts greatly appreciated as ever.

Tool kit mania, the winning bidder of a tool kit that was recently purchased on eBay for $1625.00 has now resisted the same tool kit for $4995.00. Makes perfect sense to me.

Good observation the lengths are all very close, and the flats are large and small, but not shorter.

Be glad to check it all, when I am next home, and bored...LOL!

Which 308 are you chasing the tool roll for, and I assume a U.K. car?

    Ciao Roberto,

Of the 4 Vetroresina cars in front of me at the moment, three have the differing handles as per your image. One has all handles the same.

I have no reason to suggest that the tool kits have been tampered with, but I cannot be sure.

I am certain the other posters can chime in, since they assembled the kits at Maranello in 1976 :)

I'll post some images later if anyone's interested.

Anyone know what car the O/P has???

Carl, didn't you realise that some of these guys know infinitely more than the factory itself ?
I am sure there will be some explanation forthcoming :p

    Ciao Carlo,
to be honest, some close up pics of the screwdriver handles (the four from each tool roll on one pic, please) would be much appreciated. We are discussing serious stuff here, so we have to investigate as thoroughly as possible ;-)
