My father-in-law used to tell us (my wife and I) that only those whom can't afford stuff, have a need to show it off.

Now that I'm older (AARP age), I understand what he meant. We don't give a damm about what others think about inconsequential stuff like cars, houses, lifestyle, etc. We don't live for them. If one's ego is derived from how others view your choice of car, then I would say that person has a problem.

So next time I'm in your area, I'll go on and on about your F40 and you can take me for a ride. If you come to Myrtle Beach, I'll take you in the 360.

I try to stay on two lane mountain roads. I pass slow cars when I can. They are so far behind no chance to rant at me. Problem solved.

On four lanes or bigger I try to do speed limit +5 mph. That's where the cops are. Void them when possible.

Biggest problem for me are bicyclists. They think they own the road. Ride three abreast even though there is a nice paved and empty bike path a few feet away. I honk. If they don't move over I lay on the horn. They don't like it. But there is no way to pass them in many places unless they get over. Colorado law is you can't get closer than 3 ft. Haven't hit any yet but if I do I will probably not feel a thing. They will. Sorry. Like rats on the road.

When my family and I biked we stayed on bike paths whenever possible...there were much fewer 20 yrs ago here. On the road we stayed on the right in single file. Most today do not.

This thread is getting more life. An update....

Last week my wife took the Speciale to the (same) grocery store (the very long way). She parked out front in a safe spot, and did her stuff. The store is a great, family-owned place that employs high school kids. Of course, they notice her in the car, so she gets 3 of them to help her carry her 2 bags out. Offers to let them sit in the car, take pics, etc.

She gets home, realizes she forgot a few things. I volunteer to go back over, but I take the Abarth. In the checkout line, must have been the same kids, still talking about the Ferrari that was out front. (forgive my language here). So I said "really? Red with the blue stripe? Was a MILF driving it?". the kids laugh and say yes....so I finally got to say "yeah, I'm doing her" as I walk out.

NFW. I did tell her. Also told her at least she had the boys chasing her, vs. that other young girl in the BMW.

I am the luckiest man on earth.

I have a wonderful wife that I find hot and whom I"m deeply in love with. She's a great mom to our two daughters. She let's me race cars and likes the fact that we get to drive Ferraris. She also takes my daughter all over the country to race karts, with a smile. She also walks the walk, she took over the PTA to show parents they can't outsource their kids upbringing in this day and age to a school.

She's MY MILF and I consider myself blessed.

    LMFAO, good one.

Yesterday, I was parked at a bank speaking with some friends of mine. Two different people interrupted our conversation to talk about the car. One was a young fellow with a Mitsu Eclipse. He asked to take photos, I said sure - of course. The other was a middle-aged woman with an M-B E350V4. She told us that her husband has a Lambo Gallardo and a GTR, and had an M5 until he crashed it last year. I gave her a business card for the Ferrari club and asked that her and her husband join us for a few events and become members. She was very interested.

It was a nice encounter - my car tends to draw crowds wherever she goes. The young fellow asked if it was a 488. I was a little bit shocked, and I said no. Before I had the chance to explain that it's a 360 Spider, he asked if it was a 458. Again, I told him no, but it is a 360 spider. He asked about turbocharging and if my car was anything like a 458. I told him, well, my car is a Mid-Engine rear-drive V8, so that's the same configuration as a 458. And that the 458 traces its DNA through the entire line of the mid-V8 cars.

So, anybody else been asked yet if their car is a 488??? Especially when your black fabric folding spider top is clearly visible?!? :D

I never had the 458 question, but more than once I've been asked if my 355 is "that new Ferrari."

Guess I'm out of the loop if a 355 looks like the newest ones.

During a garage sale we did before our move to Utah, I had the 355 covered and a small group (one of those travelling caravans from sale to sale) asked me how much the Corvette under the "tarp" was. That gave me a chuckle.

I've followed this thread for a long time. I've heard many of the same comments when driving my 360 spider and my current 458. I try to remember that it is a treat for most folks to see an exotic in person around here. When I hear "nice car," I usually respond with "thanks" and immediately give the model to avoid any awkwardness. I'll then politely answer any questions, and I always respond to the question of cost with, "they can be a little pricey" without more details.

Last fall and again this weekend, I encountered a couple of new ones.

Woman in her 50's and her adult daughter pulled up beside me at a stoplight in a non-descript SUV and yelled out "sweet car." Right after I said thanks, she yelled "at least mine's paid for." I sort of stuttered and said "Uh, so is mine," and they pulled away leaving me a little startled.

Twice since last fall, I've heard a variation of this one: "you know those aren't legal to buy and drive in this state, right?" WTH? I responded that they are legal in all 50 states.

Have any of you gotten that one?

Proof the 355 is aging very well indeed! :)

    Kind regards,

Yikes. Yours are two pretty new ones - I haven't heard those before.

It's quite amazing isn't it? People seem to know so much about our personal finances (relative to the debt/equity in our cars) as well as state regulations about various makes/models and their legality just from the cars they see us driving.

I dunno, I guess some people tend to express a bit of an inferiority complex when they see exotics.

    I would reply, "Yeah, I know they're illegal...that's why I drive it." :D

I'm sure others have had this experience. Last week I drove down to local strip mall to run an errand. When I came out of the store, two elderly ladies were standing behind my car admiring it and pointing to the engine that was visible through the rear deck. When I got to the car, one of the old dears asking me if this a new Mustang.

No, maam, I replied. It is a Ferrari.

Oh, I thought that perhaps because it had a horse on the back it was a Mustang.

I ended up spending about five minutes with these two ladies. They were really interested in the car and asked if they could see the engine with the deck lid open. One asked if she could sit inside and admire the leather. I had a great time.

I offered them a ride, but they giggled and said they would love to but I would then have to give a ride to their husbands as well.

Said goodbye as they walked away.

For the first one, I think there is another benign interpretation... she said "at least mine's paid for" not to imply yours is not but rather to say something positive about hers... she was trying to say she knows hers is not as nice or great a car but she is just thankful it is fully paid down. That is a fair interpretation too, I think... not saying that was necessarily the intent but I could see it bith ways...

Your mistake was responding to the "mine's paid" comment. When she blurted that out, you should have put her on ignore.

Oh, I thought so at the time, too. I was just caught off guard by her yelling it and then pulling away.

Like I said, I always remain polite and cordial when people are interested in my cars. I don't get offended by any of the questions or comments. It's just that those examples left me shaking my head a little.

I wonder if the husbands would be offended if the car in question was a Civic . . .

    Hi guys! First post here!
When my 575 got delivered last Saturday in the container, the Customs guy thought my MB C300 on the drive was a better and better looking car....
The driver of the lorry then lectured him that the 575 must have 50 thousand, so it should be better than the C class!

Thanks! Today I fitted our local numberplates. Not a straightforward exercise as the predrilled holes did not fit the holes in the car!

I was wondering the same thing. Can't make any sense of that comment, other than some guy thought the Merc was a better car.

I see that a lot of F-chatters seem to have a "glass half empty" attitude in life; yet have an inflated sense of entitlement.....
