I was and I agree. I remember quite clearly many of the smart/big players got out before the economy became an issue. Prices had already started softening. We referred to it as a big bender was ending.

Yup. 1989/1990 was very different from today.

BMW is selling i8s and Porsche is selling 918s.

Back then, Jaguar was suing customers in order to take delivery on XK220s.

Not to say that we might have a big bender ending, we're just not in those dire straights now.

Things start to slow in high end purchases before it shows up in the economy. Ferraris topping out was the beginning of the then downwards slide.

Just like in my construction services business, I saw a slowdown in March 07 but business was still brisk. The big crash came in January 08 in housing in Florida.

The economic trend line is still moving upwards and rates are too low for holding cash.

Wow, I didn't remember ~$300k for the TR top. I was vaguely remembering ~$225k. I have all of the old FMLs from the mid-1980s on, but haven't looked at 'em in years. I wasn't actively tracking TR prices, just reading the mags, etc. Guess if I was working at a dealership, a price of $300k would be worth remembering.

Other thing to consider in these bubble situations is what I think of as the "Law of diminishing rate of return." That is, while there -are- people around who can afford $150k for a 328 or $300k for a 512 TR, most of them didn't acquire money by being stupid. Buying a 512TR for $300k means it's gonna have to go up a LOT from there for one to get any kind of decent return, if looking to sell later. Now, if you just want a particular car, buy it and keep it forever. However, that's not what's driving the current hot car market - greed is.

Here's an example I like to use, per the stock market:

    * Buy stock for $100/share.

    * Goes up to $200/share, you've doubled your money, righto?

    * Stock then goes up to $300/share, you've tripled your money, righto?? WRONG.

Since you had the chance to bail out at $200/share, doubling your money, any future appreciation needs to be measured against $200/share. This means that $200 --> $300 is really a 50% profit, -not- a tripling...apply this concept to the car biz and see where you end up...

In this latest classic car run up, we will eventually get to a point where the only buyers left are the true collectors(which is a small percentage of buyers right now), who intend to buy only what they want and keep it a long time.

Timing bubbles is a rather trick biz, ain't it? :)

The Hagarty online price tool should be updated any day. If the chart trajectory continues on its path, condition 1 should be in the $110k area. I cant see a condition 1 TR for $110k anywhere.

Yes but no, AMA328. You can't take your stock for a run down the highway at midnight, keep it in 3rd round that long bend, zip it up to the redline and get the fear and loathing, feel the back mooooove, twist it back, flick into 4th, keep on going, wonder when the cops will come, then shift sharply into 5th, let off the throttle and just cruise with that 12 cyl twang goofing along behind you at a barely legal speed while thinking, Tesssssstarossa!
And then when you stop at the lights all these annoying tourists take selfies with your car and you just want to go home.
Or if you can, I need the name of your broker!

    I like your analysis Maven!

One thing that I keep reading on the different forums is the push back on the ever automation and lack of driver involvement. I wonder if that is also driving this market. I'm seeing Diablos go through the roof and a large uptick in Testarossas while Murci's, Lp640's, 430's and 360's are just going down down down.

This is why I want to get out of rental properties. It's nothing but frustration, cost and unpaid rent. At least with certain cars as investments, I can at least have fun with them.

Shamile, I think you have to be right about driver involvement and automation. My blasts in my 512M (not been for a really proper drive in my Testarossa yet) are the most exciting drives I have had, and thanks to my job I have driven most of the supercars of the modern era quite extensively. f12 a far better objective car than 512M, 599 also, yet which would I want to drive...easy.
I think 80s and 90s really were a golden era. Though being fair, 430 Scud and 458 Speciale are not boring...

Drove a 997 6 speed last week. It was fast and tight and way easier to drive than a TR. Makes a great DD but hardly anything special. No, the TR is way more fulfilling despite its quirks. It's in a different legue all together.

One of the reasons I wasn't a fan of Mercedes-Benz. You get lazy because the tech does most of the work. Give a false sense of security. You think your in control but it really is the car. Porsche has always had some form of issue. 930's great car BUT the high speed front end lift will push you right out into the wall or guard rail. Overall....still like Porsche!

Not a fan of the water cooled Porsches. I've driven both 964 and 993 and was impressed with both. My father just grabbed an 02 996 two years ago and I BEGGED him to go air-cooled. He could have got a 964 for nothing back in 2013. I've driven his car quite a few times now. The handling is superb, other than that the car is a total bore. 996's are going to be the bargain of the century soon. At the rate everything is climbing and the new cars coming out, you'll be able to get one for the price of a happy meal LOL.

I just saw, for the first time, the most awful video ever on youtube.

It is David Hasselhoff in a video with a lamborghini countach. It is so bad, that I now think the value of the countach will fall 50% then bring the testarossa down 40% just because of its close 80s association.

Back on track, I was offered $105K for my TR by a dealer at a local cars and coffee last Sunday. Current belt's, super clean White / Tan and 14,000 miles.

I told him, thank you but no thank you.....this is not a wholesale car.

Awesome car, absolutely. Crushing, in fact. I have never been so impressed by a car's all-season ability.

    But boring nonetheless.

    And I had a 996 Turbo S tuned to 577 BHP...

My every day fun car is a WRX STI with a stage 2 tune. It is far more fun than my 991S, is almost as fast and I feel like I'm in a rally every day I drive it to work. If you can get past the crazy rear wing and the cheap plastics, it is incredibly entertaining.
