Pre Oiling The Baldwin Filter

I was wondering the same thing, noticed mines weeping oil all over the valley tray today, thought that's a terrible idea on a filter mount

 

That pictogram (I believe) is more to indicate putting some oil on the contact surface of the rubber sealing ring (so it slides easily during tightening so the applied torque goes into compressing the rubber seal and not "dragging" it against the sealing flange). It never hurts to pre-fill an oil filter, but I've only ever done it on gasket-end-up designs (not sideways mounted nor gasket-end-down designs).

 

It messy and not sure it really does anything as the oil has to go all the way up to the filter anyway. I tried it and made a big mess. Use lots of rags around base and hold it over a pie plate at the angle it needs to screw on and get it on quick! HA I think if it were perfectly upright or sideways it would be easier but its at just the right angle when you turn it it seems to come out...

Agree - unnecessary. No car/engine manufacturer suggests filling a filter for routine oil changes.

OTOH, we all think we know better than Ferrari did re what oil to use so what the heck; fill the filter!

 

I fill some of the new motor oil through the oil filter housing mounting bolt (center hole), just before I mount the filter. Let it overfill a couple of times so that it also fills up the hose to the oil cooler. It might help if it has been a while since you drained the oil, and are planning on starting it right after you mount the filter.

 

Oil pressure does not protect the engine parts, oil does. When you drain and refill the motor all the parts are still coated and will be just fine when you start it up. Don't overthink it.

I have run, so far, at least two vehicles with top-mounted oil filters in excess of 200,000 miles. Plenty of other things to worry about. Not worth the mess.

I do swipe a thin coat of oil on the rubber gasket prior to installation, if there is one.

 

I use the head end of a finishing nail to pry open the anti-drainback valve, fill the oil filter to the top, then quickly flip it into place and spin it. Minimal drips.

I've also poured all 10 quarts into the engine via the oil filter mount, half toward the oil pump, half toward the bearings.

I believe it makes a difference, but I can't prove it. At least I know I made the "maximum effort".

We don't even do that on the race motors. There is no evidence to support the benefit.

 

Along these same lines-I am going to be doing my first oil change soon. Do you guys just unscrew the filter and remove or do you poke a hole in the top of it prior to removal? I have heard that you can make a mess if you just unscrew it without poking a hole in it first.

 

I do it every oil change:
1) Fill filter about half way or so.
2) Wait for oil the be absorbed by the filter
3) Flip over and spin-on

 

Poke a hole in it when you start. Do all the other work first and change the filter last. If that time span has been less than an hour or so surround the area with rags. Also be sure the cover and gasket are in place for the timing mark hole. If there is an accident you do not want to oil down the clutch. When the filter is spun off, before flipping it over cover that hole you made with a finger.

 

After each and every oil change, I turn the crank exactly 12 revolutions to make sure all old oil and new is properly mixed and has saturated the filter LOL

 

Just be sure it is over 10 and less than 15.

I have always pre oiled every oil filter I change

 

I use a pie pan and after spinning the filter off, slip it under fast. Also on the UFI and Baldwin if the car sits overnight it never leaks a drop until you take it off and turn it upside down. Most times I change the oil last, the car has been on the stands for a month. It loves fresh oil!

 

I prefill the oil filter, install the car onto a rotisserie, flip upside down and spin the filter on, anything less and you will get an air bubble. Engines hate air.

This is also how I clean out the door pockets. Its the only way the factory would have recommended.

 

I hope you weren't kidding Mike, I did this to get clean oil wicked into the filter media and prevent air pockets. Just superstitious about starting out with clean oil, even though you can never get all of the old oil out. But just enough oil to get the media wet, not halfway full.

 

I send mine to Oz, and then pull the filter while it's down under. Put on the new filter and ship it back, nary a drop is ever spilled.
