I don't see how a twin turbo car with the engine on the back can go without such intakes... It is not about the engine, but about the turbos and as we all know, the turbo coolers must have a direct air flow... Look at the Porsche Turbos (997, 991..) There is no way to get rid of that. Ferrari take their design more seriously than anyone else, so if they haven't found a solution to hide the intakes, then there is no other solution.

The 911 turbo sounds decent with an exhaust

The solution was simple, though obviously more expensive -- don't use the 458 body.

It's not the fact that it has intakes, it's that the result is mediocre at best due to wanting/needing to increase the return on the development of the 458 platform.

I will agree with you on that; they could've done a prettier job with a fresh design.

    Thanks for posting.

    My reaction:
-- The turbo whine sounds similar to my 1.4L Abarth.
-- It's loud enough at a standstill but it's misleading.

For starters 8000 RPM will not have the same sound pitch as 9000 RPM. Then under load at higher RPM, there will be more energy taken out of the exhaust to force more air into the intakes. This will reduce sound amplitude. Ferrari seems to have partially wired around this by limiting boost in lower gears.

There is no substitute for driving one.

The F430 had intakes that look nasty now in comparison to the more modern 488's IMHO. Not sure if everyone who is complaining about the intakes also were haters of the 360 and 430's too?

I'd take the intake and look of the 488 over the 430 and 360 anyday now. I think the 488 design holds up well next to the 458 and is a little more daring compared to the now subdued looking 458.

I think alot of 458 owners have "confirmation bias". As soon as they trade in their 458 for the 488 though they will all sing a different tune including how "good" Ferrari managed to make the car sound even with the turbo.

    We shall see..........

+488 brosef. I love my Sheila with all my heart and daily driving my 458 Spider is a jolt of Cialis to my soul. But, for myself and others, the 488 represents exciting new technology and performance. Like I'm going to be a whiny little b-tch about sound and intakes and OEM rims when I'm getting 100 more HP than Sheila and 52 pound-feet more torque than an F12 LMSBO.

We shall see exactly. Jomana and Red Menace and I will bookmark this thread and come back 2 years from now when we have 488 Spiders in our garages. I will bet Mayweather money the silence will be defeaning

"Confirmation Bias" is a more politically correct term than "Hatorade". I knew when I aced my Psychiatry rotation in med school I would learn one useful bit of information.

At least StevenB, Dusty and my boy Carlo are coming around. Sh-t worse case scenario I fly out Carlo to my crib for some curbside consultation on how to get more sound out of my future bride:) Lord knows he's the resident F-chat sound expert.

Don't forget Carlo my hearing is actually more sensitive than normal;)

Notice how that sound clip of the 488 only "starts" sounding good once it begins to bounce off the rev limiter. Maybe some of the aftermarket companies (ie IPE) will be able to enhance the sound but so far the clips that I have heard are not that impressive.

I for one couldn't agree more. Now that my 458 is gone, I can't wait for my new 488 to arrive.

Does anyone know when the press can get their hands on the 488? I'd imagine within the next month right?

I find many of the owners suffer from cognitive dissonance and simply convince themselves into something.

On the track of course you don't notice any lag but on the street yes lag is noticeable because you aren't in the top of the rev range at all times... I have yet to drive a turbo car that has zero lag..

These are street cars so feeling on the street is more important than any track numbers(that few if any drivers will ever achieve).

Listening to reviewers is pretty useless as well since they have the car for a few hours and all do the same routine fiorano lap + crappy hill roads around Modena....

Almost none of these reviewers actually own cars for a long time period defined as at least 6months to give a real review of the full street experience(including negatives)...
