Maserati Ghibli (1966 - 1973)

Hi Ivan,
After a lot of looking I have to report that there are no marks found so far on my doors. The second one went off for rust removal this week so expect lots of holes in that one too. I will see if the paint / rust removal exposes anything...

Since your build sheet does not have a radio listed then you car most likely was not supplied with one. My 1969 Ghibli has a Blaupunkt radio. You are right there were not that many choices when these cars were made.

I've ordered a reconditioned Becker from Chrome. They probably will be able to fix your original radio.

My 1969 Ghibli came with a Becker Grand Prix which is shown as a special order on the factory build sheet. Also, Chrome London is an outstanding source for the radios. They were able to find a mint condition Becker Grand Prix for my Ghibli and a Europa for my Mexico. First class service.

OMG they're able to install bluetooth too in these radios. I've bought old radios with an aux connection, but that is totally new to me.

However, the photo clearly shows the issue.

This is a test of your Ghibli knowledge.

There is a nice looking Ghibli spyder for sale in Hemmings. No VIN is provided, although they say it is a late production car. This is a photo of the car. Can someone tell me two things from this photo that look a bit out of place on a 1970 Ghibli?

Knock off wheels and square headlamp buckets?

 

I would say it has straight (ie early style) headlamp pods and non-original wheels with knock off hubs. Shouldn't the inside hood cover in the additional photos be trimmed in diamond pattern stamped vinyl too Ivan?

As others have pointed out the square headlights are ususally for the early cars. The Borroni KOs could be correct for a 1970. My 1969 has these same wheels and the square headlight buckets. THe yellow running lights do not appear to be the correct size and shape. Most of the late cars that had the bumper overrides on the rear also had them on the front. The mirror may not be correct but who can say for sure since most cars came without mirrors and various kinds were installed by the dealers or early owners. The steering wheel and tail lights are for US cars(or French) but the side lights appear to be EU

I noticed the square headlights and the true knock off wheels, which do not appear to be Borranis. Also if you noticed the non original front turn signals you get added bonus

Note speedo is in MPG, padded steering wheel, manufacture plate on door jamb and it has the black emission plate in the engine bay ... this sure looks like a USA delivery car.

I have inspected the Ghibli spyder prototype (#1001) that was built in 1968 and that car does NOT have the square headlights. While Gene comments could indicate that these MIGHT be original to this car ... I would look closely. I seem to remember there was a spyder involved in an accident and the front clip was repaired from an early coupe. I think the problem was that the chassis number on the car was that from the donor coupe, which significantly complicated matters. Even if this is the same car, the spyder unique features are from the firewall back therefore I would still consider it a genuine spyder. Again, this is from memory and it might not be the same car therefore my apologies to the owner.

It is a nice looking spyder and I wish the owner the best of luck.

I know of one cut car that originally was a coupe but for some strange reason it originally had a spider VIN number. I am not saying this is that car, only making the point that it does exist, I reconfirmed the story last week with the guy who cut the car.

 

I remember talking to the owner of that car at Concorso in 2000.
The story sounded weird to me but the owner assured me it was born a coupe.
Would be interesting to learn the VIN and have Fabio pull the birth certificate.

Out of curiosity, I emailed Fabio. He told me the documents he has show that my car (1967 Ghibli) was fitted with a Blaupunkt "Koeln" (sic). I take this to be Koln. I have a Becker Mexico AM/FM/cassette which was already installed when I bought the car five years ago, which looks cool, but is incorrect for my vehicle.

Ask Fabio!

 

Well, the Becker Mexico is way more valuable and cute than a Blaupunkt Koln. It's period correct too. Better than a Motorola for sure.
I'll do a further tentative!

Ivan, I know of at least one Ghibli spyder which left the factory as a coupe, but with an odd(not even) serial number. I saw the Ghibli, as a coupe, have it's engine rebuilt in a friend of mine's garage. I commented to him that both the engine and body had matching serial numbers that belonged to a spyder. A couple of years later it was cut into a spyder using one of Ralph Paul's kits.
It did appear at Concorso Italiano, maybe in 2000, as a spyder and won it's class. It was red and I think had wire wheels. I was always curious as to what the factory build sheet said. It must have been intended to be a spyder, but definitely left the factory as a coupe. I don't have the serial number, but I'll research my files and see if I can dig it up.
Since I know of one, maybe there are others.

Mine Becker has just arrived from Chrome and is being installed this week. I have bluetooth as well. I'll give you some feedback and pic.
