OK...the car has developed a strange metallic rattle. I've looked around the engine compartment/firewall area for anything that might be loose, but have found nothing. I've searched threads here, and it appears that rattling only seems prevalent after a cold start. Mine is the opposite condition....

When I start the car from cold, it sounds and drives perfectly for about the first 20 minutes or so.

Once the car gets warmed up, if I decelerate without pushing the clutch in, I hear a tinny-metallic rattle that appears to be coming from right behind the firewall. doesn't seem to be coming from the pumpkin area or rear of the car.

Upon deceleration, if I hear this noise, it immediately goes away if I push the clutch in.

    any thoughts?

It sounds very much like the flywheel rattle. If the flywheel grease has partially leaked out (or thinned-out or it is incorrect type), the flywheel will start making the rattling noise when it warms up. Pressing the clutch will make it stop or get quieter. The rattle sound will transmit through the whole engine so it may be heard as coming from its front.

I was kind of thinking that, but unsure. I've got the car apart for my yearly service anyway....time to look more into it....

Id love some of those wheels. Looks great.

Dual mass flywheels tend to make noise so that kinda makes sense, push in the clutch and it goes away sounds like the flywheel to me too.

Might be the TO bearing. My car would start and drive normally and after a good long drive would start squealing like a stuck pig. Different symptoms but might be the same disease. It didn't sound like it was in the tranny from the driver's seat even though it was.
New clutch/pressure plate from Plugzit and Hill TO bearing from Ricambi fixed her right up. Shifts better than ever. Flywheel was fine.

Cuneo- why "plugzit" clutch vs OEM?

i've had 2 similar rattles. One was the flywheel (replaced)...the other was the bypass valve.

Bruce (user Plugzit) sold me the OEM clutch and p plate for a great price, he's not a manufacturer.

too many people just writing something to say something while they are not correct.
if you push the clutch pedal and noise goes away, then it is not the flywheel.

more likely to be thrust bearing or input shaft of gearbox if noise disappears when clutch pedal is pressed.

I had an annoying rattle...it was the drivers side engine side panel that was vibrating at certain RPMs. I removed it, and added some foam tape in a couple spots, reinstalled, and no more rattle. ;) I also had a rattle once on a heatshield on the exhaust bypass Y pipe. I friend added a couple spot welds to fix it.

whatever, its something, he needs to figure it out, neither you me or anyone else can trouble shoot over the internet, we can only talk about what we have seen in the past.

I'm not just pulling anything out of the blue, this is a issue I have seen.

But your not just writing something to say something right? you know exactly what it is.

See if the rear hood of the car is loose, if it is, you can tighten it up very easily by adjusting the bolts on the latches. Also check the right and left lateral shields by the engine bay.

I have the exact same problem. I talked to another 355 owner has the exact same problem. I am guessing mine is the t/o bearing I won't know until I pull it apart this week. I will let you know what I find

There are all kinds of of things that can cause what you are hearing. Too hard to narrow down over the net. I would suggest you take it in and have it looked at.
