    Hey guys,

Has anyone else experience very hot rear brakes (much hotter than the fronts) but even after a relatively steady drive? Mine get hot to the point of burning skin even after what I would consider a relatively steady drive. The fronts however are at a normal temp as I would expect.

    Anyone else?

    Thanks

    James

that's certainly atypical from my experience

    A few random thoughts

    1) the rear brakes are what the car uses for stability control, are you driving straight and narrow or throwing it around? (i.e. on track, you'll go through rear pads quickly if the system engages a lot...).

    2) are the brakes dragging at all?

    3) "hot" is a relative term with CCM's. However, rears should not be "hotter" than the fronts. Question - while it's not scientific, the VDA screen will show brake temps (blue-green-red, warm-up/go/hot). Are you getting a "red" on that screen?

If the brakes look like they are getting unusually worn (look at the pads and rotors), might be worth a check by the dealer. If they are dragging, you'd hear them at very low speeds.

    Keep us posted please

    Hey,

    Thanks for the info,

So, just got back from a drive - nothing too fast. Back brakes still getting hotter than the fronts but no indicator on the VDA - rears still displaying as green so as you mentioned I presume they aren't 'overheating' - do you think it's possible the pads are so new they just need a little bedding in?

    Thanks again.

Not an F12 but my first FF went through a set of rear pads in about 35,000 miles while the fronts looked almost new. I assume traction control is regularly stepping in for me.

So this is all based on how they feel to your touch? Which ones are you touching first?

Yes it is based on the heat radiating from them and a one time touch, The fronts i can actually touch without the risk of a burn finger - the rears no chance. And i'm not driving hard. Will keep running it for a few weeks and see if the rears improve - it may just be the pads are touching the brakes very slightly and a little wear will take that little pressure off?

Just picked my F12 up today. Awesome bit of kit! I also noticed that the rear disk where hotter than the fronts. That was with very light stop start traffic through the centre of London in Sport mode. The disks and pads are new so I wonder if they are needing bedded in properly. It is slightly concerning as the fronts should be working harder than the rears. Does anyone know the bedding in procedure for new disks and pads as I have never had carbon ceramics before so don't know what the procedure is.

The bedding in for both my California and my FF has been multiple hard stops from slowly increasing speeds. I don't have the exact procedure but read it a couple years ago when I replaced all the pads in my Cali. It had something like a dozen somewhat firm stops from 20-40 mph with a cool down. Then another dozen with higher braking effort with a cool down and finally a few from 70 mph or so into the ABS, so very hard stops. When you start the bed in it may have near zero brakes, be very careful, then they slowly get better and better. It all takes about 20 minutes as I remember.

I find it interesting that this same thing would be needed for every new car off the assembly line however the silly user manual says to be nice to the brakes for the first few hundred miles. I ignore that with my new Ferraris now :)
