I was looking through some old vacation pics from a trip to the Smithsonian when I came across the attached photo. I am somewhat aware of the origin of the Shield and Francesco Baracca but was wondering if the Prancing Horse was placed on all or a lot of Italian planes in the second World War or if this might have been a pilots personal choice to put it on there?

There is a thread here about this subject. I can't recall the specifics.

And American pilot Lt. Col. Edward B. Giller flew several P-51D Mustangs, all called the "Millie G," and at least some had a red prancing horse on the tail.

    Horses look cool.

From what I read, this is where Enzo got the inspiration to use the prancing horse on his product.

Sorry Ross, but most probably no.

There is a small controversy, as with many things Ferrari, about the origins of the "Cavallino Rampante" emblem, as figuring on Francesco Baracca's planes during the first World War.

Some people think that Baracca might actually have taken the emblem from a german airplane that he shot down, and which might have had a prancing horse from the Stuttgart city "Wappen" as a badge.
However, most people rather consider the "other theory" as being more probable: Baracca's fighter regiment descended directly from the "Second Regiment "Piemonte Reale Cavalleria" from the Italian Army, which cavalry regiment had a "Cavallino Rampante" for emblem (only a red one).

    Piemonte Cavalleria - Wikipedia

According to Enzo Ferrari, as the legend goes (well, as he wrote it...) it was the mother of Francesco Baracca who suggested to him to take her son's emblem as the emblem for the Scuderia, this in 1923. He modified the drawing on one point: he had one of the rear legs of the horse drawn standing up.

The former Fighter Regiment into which Francesco Baracca served continued to use its variant of the "Cavallino Rampante" as a badge, and continues to this day. Note that it is the former version, with the two rear legs of the horse on the ground.

It must be the "4th Stormo Caccia" today, if my memory serves me well.
(well my brain cells are not too weak, the 4° stormo it is indeed:

...and for those of us who still have nostalgia for the fabulous F-104 Starfighter, said 4° Stormo Caccia, being Baracca's former fighter regiment, has never missed an opportunity to display its proud association with Ferrari.
Some of its Starfighters were painted in "Rosso Corsa" from time to time, and the 4° Stormo is twinned with the Ferrari club Italia.

I've stood next to a German Luftwaffe, F-104 during a mock Arms Control Inspection during a training course.

I was shocked. They are the Mini or Smart of the aircraft world.

Teeny tiny little things .............. ALL ENGINE.

As a kid, I grew up near the French/Luxemburg/German border during the sixties and the seventies.
When the weather was at least fair, I only had to go in the garden and wait five minutes or about to see one, or more, flying above my head LOW; and I mean LOW: there were almost no rules about altitude security during the cold war.

At any period of time there were never less than at least four Starfighter fighter wings in a circle of less than sixty miles around the house, notably at Marville, Grostenquin, Zweibrücken, Bad-Sollingen...mostly the Canadians.
It was such a fascinating aircraft to watch, that "Zipper"...

YEP. During the Cold War fixed and rotary-winged guys did some really C R A Z Y stuff.

In retrospect, in a perverse way, it was fun times.

Come on, Patrick...put "F-104" "4 stormo" in your search engine of choice and you will find hundred of pics of the "spillone" (the pin hat, one of the names the italian pilots used for it) in different camouflage colors, or some in very, very attractive special liveries...
    How 'bout that one?
