He was being childish. Same when he took 2 hours to exit the car and hit the #3 sign rather than stopping.

I cannot even imagine what Alonso would have said in the same circumstances.

No, I was impressed by Hamilton today; he didn't throw his toys out of the pram as he so often did in the past.

Are we seeing the return of good basic sportmanship in F1, or is it too much to hope for?

I think he was trying to calm himself before facing the media and possibly saying something he'd later regret.

Better to cool off before having a mike stuck in your face.
The guy was gutted. Don't begrudge him a minute to collect himself.

Hitting the sign was genius. I loved it.

He heard Toto blaming an algorithm. Seriously. They needed an algorithm to calculate a pit stop delta. Mathematics is so 20th century....

Now Uhlenhaut is spinning in sympathy.....

I would have been more impressed if he had managed to calm himself during the cool down lap.

I did watch part of the replay race with interviews (how nice of NBC to allow us to see driver interviews.....) and he handled himself better in the interview than on the cool down lap.

Contrary to what some had said, Nico didn't gloat, either. He was understandably happy, but acknowledged right away that he was lucky. That's racing. Nico's car has failed him more than once in the past few years. That's also racing.

Maybe the title of this thread should be changed to: How to make friends and influence people, or The psychoanalysis of Mr Lewis Hamilton....

Thanks. That makes me laugh every time I see it. I think because it was casual, so obviously unrehearsed and in-the-moment. It couldn't have been staged more perfectly, with the standard not coming into the frame until just before impact, standing straight as a toy soldier, refusing to be knocked down. Perfection.

Surely the FIA must have some penalty for "unauthorized striking of a parc ferme finishing position standard."

When you get 160 mil for performing in public it comes with the territory.

Fans figure that you owe them.

There are at least three inaccuracies in that statement.

True, but I think he acquitted himself well, given the situation. Is also agree it was smart to gather himself before facing the media...no longer do we have the days when James Hunt was respected for saying what's on his mind.

Corporate F1 requires diplomacy, even in the face of harsher situations.

Algorithm? What algorithm could possibly account accurately for being behind a safety car? Under race conditions, I can see the simple math of how much are you ahead, and how long might you spend in pit lane, but behind a safety car? It was the fog of race conditions and they flat out made a mental error and exercised poor judgment, unless telemetry was telling them there was a problem with the car.

It was not telemetry, as Lewis' quit about 1/3 of the way into the race. Lack of telemetry may have fueled the desire to change the tires though (out of precaution)

I don't get why so many fans are saying Lewis was robbed. It's pathetic!

Nico did not steal the victory or cheat in any way. He was merely in the right place at the right time and has every right to celebrate the win.

Probably because he WAS robbed of a win due to a careless error. Nico had nothing to do with it though.

Watching Lewis act like he is alright with what happened ("I'll just concentrate on winning the next one")... instead of getting mad, getting angry, is what's wrong with F1. I miss the days when a man could get fired up and say what he wanted to say instead of what the PC police want him to say. They are millionaires reduced to "milk toast" for their fear of upsetting anyone, anywhere, anytime.

I don't care if Lewis wins or not, but I want the race I'm watching to mean something when a dominate car and a dominate driver comes in 3rd partly because of the difference between Safety car on track vs Virtual safety car. The "sport" in this so called sporting event went right out the window. It became an exercise for those who love to argue rules and technicalities, not very satisfying to anyone on or near the podium today as everyone looked embarrassed for F1.

There was no good reason for them to pit, regardless of virtual safety car, real safety car, or any other kind of safety car. The mistake was that pitting had even entered their minds.

Nobody robbed Lewis any more than Lewis was gifted each of his prior victories. F1 is a team sport and every component must function at its peak in order to win consistently.
