    Nils.

I live in Southern California, spend my time between here & London, and everywhere in-between.

    I get around.

Ive never lived in Durban, but I feel sure that making an unsolicited approach to a Countach owner there by knocking on his door would not be wise. In fact, I'm relatively certain this approach would at very best be viewed with a great deal of suspicion by any Countach owner (besides you of course). That's the point most posters are making on the subject of unsolicited approaches.

Quite frankly, the accepted, appropriate & most productive way to buy a very expensive car like a Countach today, is a matter of common-sense (or lack thereof depending on your viewpoint).

I sell Countachs for a living, and my name is not unknown in relation to the car, and yet, I would not dream of just simply showing up at someone's house and knocking on the door, when I could introduce myself via several other far more credible means. Again, bear in mind that I do this as a full-time profession, with some success.

Perhaps this topic requires patient explanation, but perhaps too I can be forgiven for being redundant, as half your responses are trolling ones like this http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/143952024-post4383.html and many read like you've had too much st margaritha.

You're entitled to your opinion on appropriate ways to make an unsolicited approach, mine simply mirrors that of most meaningful posts made on the topic. I encourage you to try yours, and see how it works out for you.

My absolute favourite place in the whole world!!

Pity the real estate is so expensive - 19mil euro for a "livable" shack on 350sqm of land!
Although having a permanent suite at Hotel Splendido wouldn't be a bad idea ;)

Who said people are knocking on doors???? This is like a soap opera . This all started from someone calling Countach owners so they could buy a car. Nothing wrong with a person using PUBLIC information to try and obtain (legally) the car of their dreams. Everyone on this forum puts their info out there for the PUBLIC to see. With todays resources (the internet , in case some of you have been living under a rock) people can find you very easily. If you want your privacy.....don't post your thoughts, pics, opinions etc. Sorry for the rant but if you want to talk about your cars, expect the rest of the world to see.....Post that you own a Yugo to avoid a phone call :)

Perhaps you missed it, but its been suggested & covered here:
    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/143950602-post4375.html

And mentioned how it worked in the past here:
    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/143952230-post4386.html

Added to this, a client of mine did have someone knock on his door recently. His information is not public. A line was crossed. It didn't work out too well for the caller...

    Carry on gentlemen.

Joe, i am trying to put some humor in to my replies, some with more sucess than others,
I am inn to the Countach mania to have fun,and an absolute fan of the car from when i first saw it in a magazine in the early 70s,i know you do this for a living,or part of it,and you have my outmost respect,
Me, and most guys on this site, makes our living in other fields,i do appologise if i offended annyone with my replies, but believe me,its all good, i noticed you hit me a couple times under the belt in your rant, but i am not going to coment on that. I do however know there is places you Can still knock on the front door if there is a Contach sitting in the Driveway, mine happens to be one of those, wheter its in Boulder, or Florida, not to mention Oslo.
Have a great Memorial day everybody, i am taking the family boating, hopefully i can have one of those Margaritas you where refering to.

    By "caller" I meant visitor.

What the person did was trespass a private estate and knocked on the front door. I'm not going to share the details of what transpired, but let's say it did not end well for the person who made the approach unannounced. This scenario is pretty easy to imagine, and I dare say was simply the result of not using common-sense, which seems pretty common these days.

As Ive said, I make a living successfully buying Countachs from people I don't know, and none of my approaches involve knocking on their front door unannounced, even though I know their location before I make my introduction. Makes sense?

Personally, I don't, but as you can see http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/143950602-post4375.html there are some who would consider it, of course, depending on their property location, when & how the approach was made etc.

The point is, like it or not, we live in a different world today, and anyone pretending that's not the case is simply being naïve.

So too, there are methods to buy a Countach today that do not involve surprising or stalking the owner. Its pretty simple.

    Love this!!! So True!!

I am glad that there are plenty of other sane minded individuals coming out and supporting the theory that a phone call properly identifying an individual interested in buying your car should not be grounds for sticking a 44 magnum down their throat unless you are Dirty Harry.

The other thing I have seen some people complain about is how much attention the Countach gets. Amazing!!! How much effort does it take to allow an ogling teenager drooling over the car to take a picture with it.

It should serve as a reminder of how blessed we are to have any of these exotic cars.

Dirty Harry: "Well, you gotta ask yourself a question.... Are you feeling lucky punk??!!!"

    Or how about this....

Wealthy polite neighbor: (Ding Dong) - (Door answers)
"Hi, I'm so sorry to bother you but I live two doors down from you and I saw you out yesterday with that gorgeous Countach. I have always wanted one since I was a child but they are so rare that I have never even seen one in person. I was wondering if I might be able give you my business card and humbly ask you to keep me in mind, should you ever wish to sell it?"

Dirty Harry: (Takes out his 44 Magnum)"Go ahead Punk!!! Make my day!!!"

I will close with a song from the 'Black Eyed Peas' for your reflection
    - "Where is the love?"

Thank You. That is the exactly the point I am trying to illustrate....a phone call is not crossing the line. People get unsolicited phone calls everyday. If you don't like them screen your calls like I do. I will talk to a fellow car enthusiast who calls me any day, even if none of my cars are not for sale :)

I'm so glad that the conversation has gone full circle back to someone cold called a Countach owner and that is in bounds. So then what? As I previously inquired, if you do entertain the cold caller, who should make the first volley? Buyer? Or Seller?

    Obviously.

Phone calls are of a completely different nature from unsolicited in-person home-visits from people who are complete strangers. By complete strangers, we are not talking of people in your neighborhood from 2 doors down - who you would obviously know!

Phone calls are easy to handle, no problem at all, and in an era of unsolicited calls, they really don't cross any lines.

One time there was a guy who walked by my car when parked and wanted to buy it. He took pictures, posted them on the internet, told everyone on his forum that the car was a pile of crap, and that he was hoping to offer me 40 grand for it. Then he created a new name on Fchat (his old one got banned) and asked if he could buy the car. This has to be the worst buyer-approach of all time. I would have taken "WANNA SELL IT" from a jackass driving by over this any day of the week hehe.

Thank you for sharing this story.

You've illustrated yet again that some people will always be more tactful than others.

With your kind permission, I'd like to use this as example number 36 in the new book I am working on entitled: "How Not To Buy A Motorcar" :)

I think it would be fair to expect the person contacting you out-of-the blue to make a solid offer, and make it in writing.

Since they are approaching you unsolicited, they have to establish credibility with you by following through.

In the spirit of being humorous but also real, this conversation has gone the way of most when kindergarteners play telephone in a circle. Is this really what you think has been suggested? Phone calls are now that same as walking onto gated estates, I see. ;)

Stop watching so many movies guys :)

I wish the world was a better place where we didn’t have to lock our doors, and everyman’s handshake meant something, but it’s not.

If someone walks past a closed gate, up a 200 ft manicured drive, and knocks on a door asking about a car that’s worth $$$, if (big IF) someone was to open the door don’t be surprised if they have a weapon within reach or behind their back in Condition 0. Oh and smile, you're on camera too. If it was a 10 year old child knocking then shame on his parents for allowing him to walk past the gate up to a strangers door.
