The NBCSN announcers in the US certainly didn't notice Hamilton in the pits until he came out!

One good thing of Verstappen crash and Mercedes wrong pit call: We got to hear Hamilton say "stop talking to me" again!

I'll confess I'm a Ferrari fan and not a big Hamilton fan, but at least by ramming into the #3 sign at the end showed a bit of personality! Not as good as Vettel being happy with 2nd place, but at least it's some personality!

Not one chance in a million Vettel passes either of them, let alone both.

Did Vettel even have a big enough gap to pit without losing position?

Correct. Was never going to happen unless Lewis or Nico screwed up

It's easy to be a General after the war. Not so easy when you have 10 seconds to decide. Nobody knew how strong the Ferrari would be with fresh SS vs old softs on the Mercedes.
Vettel did have enough time to pit.

I provided one possible explanation. It makes a lot more sense than the VSC/SC explanation or the cold tire feedback.
There is no way Mercedes didn't know that 19.7 sec was not enough.

When the Mercedes mechanics come out I thought it was a precaution for a flat tire. I knew it was game over when I saw the car approaching.
You guys actually believe that a pitwall full of engineers didn't know there wasn't enough time?

19.7sec will never be greater than 20sec+possible pit mistakes even under VSC rules.

Excuse me, but what makes you think you know what I thought and when I thought it?

All I'm saying is that it's easy to make that conclusion after the race. Now we all know that even a fresh set of SS will not help you much.

but with history, it was always a pretty safe bet, wasn't it?

Plus...if Vettel had stopped, he'd have had other traffic to fight with before catching the Mercedes anyway.

Where did you get these "20 sec" from? Are they under normal conditions or when the safety car is out? Because under safety car the cars on track need more time between the pit entrance and the exit as well so the loss pitting might be less than that...As far as I can see this is where the misscalculating of Mercedes happened...

Question - if Ferrari could have pitted Vettel and kept 3rd place has has been suggested, then why didn't they? Answer - because they aren't completely stupid and used a bit of human brain power to work out it wasn't worth the risk. This marks the difference between a smart team and a team of cyborgs who can't think for themselves.

Aside from the comedy of these pics, it is sobering to think how different the outcome could have been for Vers Junior had he crashed at that speed into the much more limited barrier protection that Vers Senior crashed into. It's easy to mock F1 these days, but one thing we should all be grateful for is the advance in driver safety.

Yes, but it's still a unknown. Didn't Pirelli just introduce this SS at Monaco?
Vettel would have retained his 3rd position. All the lapped cars are allowed to unlap.

My problem with this excuse is that you can miscalculate by 0.1-0.5 seconds but how in the hell do you miss it by 3+ sec? 3 sec is an eternity in F1.
Plus if you watch the race again there was plenty of time to cancel the call. Check when the actual SC came out then how long the mechanics were waiting for Lewis.
The VSC/SC miscalculation doesn't add up.

    Agree.

I think they were over confident and thought they could pit and still lead and have the unnecessary insurance of fresh rubber to rub the others face in it ... but it backfired big time!

Showing off in F1 usually ends with egg on your face, lol :D
