If you have had your 355 valves guides replaced, what type were used?

  1. Manganese Bronze, no problems since.

  2. Sintered Steel, no problems since.

  3. Manganese Bronze, have had problems with new guides

  4. Sintered steel, have had problems with new guides.

This is a simple pole. The issue of valve guide replacement on 355s has come up over and over and there has been much discussion of what type of guides should be used, Manganese Bronze or the factory, Sintered Steel. There have been contradictions from the experts as well. Brian Crall has stated that he has used manganese bronze without problem. Recently, Dave Helms has returned and commented that the latest thing is replacing after market manganese bronze guides that have failed. I'll make no comment other than to say in the 5 years I have been reading the 355 group I can not recall anyone saying that they had to have guides done a second time regardless of which type were installed. So let's get some real data by taking a few minutes to answer this pole and generate a data base. Maybe we can come to a consensus.

You need a choice for don't know. That will include most owners.

As long as you change them and they are done correctly.

Seen so so many pros put in guides that had worse clearances then the original bad ones.

Most important use a GREAT machine shop with impeccable reputation. machining is also an art.

I had mine replaced by Ferrari of Fort Lauderdale in 2012, and they used cast iron valve guides. Not a choice in your poll. Excerpt from my quote:

Well it's not like anyone asks. Hell, half my clients don't even want the invoice, they just want a bottom line.

Force the knowledge of what you did for the customer or tell them an extra 10% on the PO for no explanation LOL

You can try all you like. Most don't care. Some I spend as much time explaining as I do working on the car but they are a tiny minority. Like I said a very big percentage do not even want the invoice. When it comes time to sell they just call and ask for a set of copies to throw on the seat. Do not mistake the people here with the average Ferrari owner. A substantial percentage just have an annual appointment and drop it off, sometimes they ask how much it will cost. If you specialize in being someone they can trust that is how it usually goes.

And why would I force anything on anybody? For any reason? If they have an interest, great. If not, that's OK too.

They want the car maintained, they demand it be reliable. The rest is just BS to most.

Again, people here have the mistaken impression they represent the majority of owners. That's a long way from reality.

The main reason in Sweden for not wanting the invoice is, we don't want to pay the 25% of VAT.....

They are paying tax, they just don't care about records.

I am the one accountable for the tax and I am the one who goes to jail for not collecting it. Sorry, I know it sounds unreasonable but I am not going to jail so someone else can save a few bucks.

"Don't know" isn't an answer. It doesn't contribute to the data base.

Not mistaken at all. But I can not ask those who don't frequent FChat. And I would presume that those who have had their guides done by Ferrari had sinter steel installed.

It's just a community poll which may shed some light on this community's experiences.

A little Rectal Cranium Inversion on my part :)

I tend to look at things from my past. When folks got to me on the most part due to a severe catastrophic incident with the car and possibly personal injury where they wanted to know but did not know what to ask. Part of my job was to assure them and powder their ass that everything is OK in their minds or my job was not done.

Totally missed the point of view of a quality service center customer base.
