How do all of you German Shepard owners like your dogs? We are looking at getting one for my sister and one for me... Pro? Cons?

I've had three and really like the breed. German Shepherds are very intelligent and loyal dogs that can be trained to perform a broad range of tasks or simply be great companion dogs. They can suffer from health issues that all large breeds face, so I would suggest buying from a reputable breeder. They also shed a lot.

What are you looking for in a dog?

 

I'm looking for pretty much everything you just said. Haha. My mom grew up with German Shepherds, so that why I initially started looking at them.

 

Last year, a week hunting Cali, Nv, Wy and SoDak...did wonders for my blood pressure petting them 6-8 hrs a day on the road

Technically not my dog but my parents dog when I was in middle and high school... She's nearly 10 now

We picked her up from a pound when living in Germany believe that she is originally from Romania.

Here are my 2 pooches;

Clara Bell, our Great Dane, is around 6 years old, and weighs about 125lbs.

Buddy is an Australian Shepherd, about 4 years old. I had to include a shot of him as a puppy!

Location and circumstances would make owning a dog irresponsible, but I'd love either a Bichon, a Belgian, or both. (Never met a Bichon whose liveliness didn't put a smile on my face or a Belgian that wasn't alert, intelligent and striking.)

I have two PITA dogs, the last dogs I will ever have. My past cats were more loving and protective and not worried about their next treat like these "food whores".

Venting.

 

Watch out, Gregg. Hating on dogs is akin to loving on Satan in some quarters. LOL.
But, I hear you. I often joke to my wife that I went to school for 20 years to be the hand servant to a 30 lb diva that understands only two words - chicken and poop. However, she's the light of our life, so I just get with the program.

Wow. I'd say someone earned themselves a doggie treat that day! Some of these stories I've read about the intelligence & loyalty of akitas are pretty impressive....T

 

He certainly did. In my experience with these dogs, I have to say they are real thinkers, they will guard and bark, but they do it in the most bizarre way, Harry creeps up on people nosing at the gates and only barks when he is inches from them, just as he comes into view.... I've seen big men run in panic before they even consider what barked! It's so funny, and he loves it too, teases them to come in and try their luck, dances about and really seems to be saying to them, come on, have a go, try your luck!

 

New dog coming home Tuesday the 9th. He'll be 8weeks and is a German Shepherd. I normally have Rottweiler's. This will be my first non Rottweiler in 16 years. Two of my past Rottweiler's. I'll get pics of the new puppy Max next week.

My plan is to have Max fully trained in a year or two and then get another Rottweiler.

In my picture is the corner of head from my third dog.

I was basically no more Rottweiler's because they made me sad. They all look like my past dogs. Now I'm out of the grieving process and want another one.

I'm thinking about buying this dog: Elton vom Hause Neubrand II ? working-dog

 

Not to be a wet blanket, but is adoption or rescue an option in your area?
