True. Or even if it's a specific car, and the word is adequately spread, folks'll swing by Seattle ...

As a buyer and seller at retail and wholesale auctions since 1988 I can share with you a very simple comment. An auction is nothing more than a fast paced negotiation. Forcing opinions and perceptions as the standard is senseless. Every auction and venue is different. And the slight nuances to each event and the moment someone makes a decision can shock even the most seasoned attendee like myself. They simply are not predictable, PERIOD. Roy is dead on, the sale or lack of sale is extremely specific to that moment in time with those people present and their moods also.
Auctions were recorded as early as 500BC! I seriously doubt anyone here is going to imply there are standards and rules which have applied since then.
The word "auction" is derived from the Latin augeō which means "I increase" or "I augment"
    Nuff said.

One car that went across for a great price was this BMW 2002. I didn't see it in person, but $4000 "all in" seems like a great buy for a '75 2002:

    Totally.

We live in a global world linked by the internet. A good example of any iconic sports car will attract real bidders even if the "auction" is on an Island on the South China Sea. The convenient notion that certain venues or auction houses are not ideal when a poor result or no-sale occurs is primarily an excuse.

    GREAT!

I take it from your comment you will be getting out of the "Brokering" market for Lamborghini's..

after all there is NO MORE commission fee's for you to make on these cars..

Seems like a 360 degree turn around from not long ago when you constantly "championed" the 89 anniversio car as THE BEST ever made of the Variant and a great investment car..

I wonder HOW your customers are re-acting NOW to what you say, after you told them the opposite and SOLD them an ANNIVERSARY car..??

OH wait, I forget, you had one FOR SALE during those times...

Let me take a guess..the NEXT great one of all times and a MUST have will be a Periscopa.. LOL

That's a good point to make, because the way I look at the ownership landscape today, many of the new collectors will never have to sell, and will only do so if they want something different.

that shld be a positive factor supporting prices for good cars

I fall in the buy the low mile car camp but I certainly can see buying the white car roy has and actually driving it, enjoying it, while saving 100k. maybe in another 25 yrs mileage wont matter as much but it certainly seems to matter for cars from the 80s on.

good luck with the sale roy

I disagree. As a participant in several different venues and auction houses results vary depending on several factors.

Location, marketing, attendance, & the overall experience. Some vendors really cater to their elite buyers/sellers making them feel good about spending their millions while some others are operated like a hot dog stand.

I have NEVER in my life seen such a D**K swinging in the wind responses the way it blows at any given moment as yours does....

I wonder how you would have responded had the car HAMMERED at $375K..

"see my estimates I make are spot on...the MARKET has spoken, just let me pat myself on the back..OH and yes I can do that with my eyes closed all day long"

Someone should make a GRAPH of the last few years of your in-consistent comments on cars..BUT YOUR constant CONSISTENT same "negative and derogatory" comments on EVERY SINGLE car that you did not have a HAND in selling..seems like unless YOU TOUCHED it with your blessing, then it is just a POS no matter what LOL

The $450K Countach you had NOTHING to do with..so it is poo pooed..but if you did, YOU WOULD be here from the TOP of the mountains declaring the record sale...

Also amazes me HOW you throw your customers under the bus and throw them away and poo poo their cars when they make a choice NOT to use you again in the future..EVEN when you sold them the car in the FIRST PLACE..because when you SOLD it, it was the BEST thing since sliced White Bread...now when it got re-sold AND YOU had NOTHING to do with the sale..it is all of a sudden a POS...AMAZING just AMAZING...

But I am glad we NOW have this in writing from you..because I know of at LEAST 3 89 cars ALREADY set for Auctions (all 3 different auction house's in Monterey in August). I JUST cant wait to see all the GREAT deals everyone will get at buying these all at UNDER $200K each I just cant wait...

But then again, I am sure there will be some MAGICAL D**K in the wind excuse for each one that goes good..ESPECIALLY the one you are representing.. If I recall correctly you blessed it and ordained it with Holy Sackey water while driving it threw the Swiss Alps and re-citing the Owners manual in 3 different languages while displaying the Italian Flag on the side window and of course LAST but NOT LEAST from your "private" collection of "Factory archives" (cough cough) show that it was built on the 3rd Monday of September by the 3rd longest employee at the factory because the second longest one was sick that day..so it got special shock absorbers and had an EXTRA key made with it...then went down the line and had special "calf Skin" one of one leather with special cut dye marks added because the upholster lady came back to work for ONLY ONE day to teach the new people..as is evident in "my one of one factory records"....and it was painted RED, the most used color, HOWEVER this RED was from the LAST can of Red Paint that Mr Lamborghini HIMSELF looked at as he walked the hallways of his FIRST factory which he drove to on his FIRST built tractor....

    But hey..."Thanks for sharing"

In the small world of Lamborghini byers/ entusiasts, everybody and their mother know all the Lambos at this perticular auction belongs to Roy, there is no bargin to be had,why bid when ,if interested, you can call Roy and actually talk to him and save the buyers fee,the only Lambo bidders at this auction where people wich would trow out some number, thinking who knows, probably wont work, but what the heck,

It is, and therein lies my point, because even in a less-than-ideal market (2009/10 for example) good cars are still supported by strong prices.

I'm sure there are buyers out there who can easily drop $400K+ who also spend little or no time on forums. For those buyers, for which I work with several, it's an emotional purchase. The last thing they need is to read that their car is substandard because it has a wrong screw. Being at several auctions for things that I had no plans to buy I can say from first hand experience that there are buyers out there that buy just because they like what they see and that they just happened to be at an aution when the item came up.

    So true.

I sold a 2006 Prevost bus at a Mecum auction this year for $600k hammer. It was on the second day of a 10 day auction and was the 11th vehicle across the block. It sold under the hammer to a buyer who never looked at it. Bought it from the 10th row from pictures on the screen since it would not fit inside the building. The best part? We have become great friends over the last 5 months and are in contact regularly.
And to let you know how delicate these auctions are...
His friend nudged him while the bus was on the block with his elbow. "Hey, isn't that the bus you were thinking about bidding on?" He had turned to the person sitting behind him and was having a conversation about a car. If not for his friend he would never have bid and would not likely have bought the coach.

I disagree. Actually it costs quite a bit of money to prepare for an auction as a purchaser. Fly you and or your inspector to the venue, register for the auction, etc. without knowing if you will even end up with the car. Not to mention that you can't drive or fully inspect the car. With the high hammer prices as of late, many don't want to go through the hassle if they can find a car through private treaty or a dealer. For the right cars auctions make sense, but certainly not for every car.
