Any chance I could get someone who has a CarFax account to run a VIN# for me? I'm considering downsizing from the BMW to a VW GTi 2.0T, the VIN# is WVWEV71K58W072613.

    Would be much appreciated.

All I know is that this isn't the car I would choose for a road trip from TX to Juneau, AK.

The Bimmer is fine and just received a new set of shoes and a Mobil 1 full syn transfusion but the maintenance cost would probably be double over the VW. Checking HADA & KBB the high end for this model/year and mileage max's out at $4.5K so the asking price of $10.9K is ridiculous. I would rather have a 4-door anyway.

Dave the 2.0T VW engine is very highly regarded as one of the best ever produced and in my opinion 144K miles is not a issue. Have you seen the prices for both MKI and MKII MR2's lately, it is insane.

I do appreciate the input though. My research has yielded not only a nice savings in insurance but also in fuel cost and if I do decide to pursue this model my biggest decision will be between a manual or auto, sad I know.

I have no plans now or in the future of driving to Juneau so that is not a concern.

Probably wasted breath but here goes anyway....

It has nothing to do with the 2.0T "highly regarded" engine. Engines aren't the only thing on a car that wears out. Seats, rubber bushings, electronics, etc., etc. Cars with 144k+ miles are nearing the end and aren't cars that should be purchased for daily drivers.

And by the way; just because an item commands a high price doesn't mean that item's value is actually worth that price.

Go buy a Caddy CTS with under 35,000 miles on it. They depreciate like crazy and their value has dropped like a stone. Most of them have lost almost 60% of their value in the first 2 years! You'll get a reliable car, which is what you need, for not a lot of cash and you won't be driving some rice burner or a German car that frankly, you can't afford to fix.

Wayne, why does the first ad you posted show the mileage in kilometers? That would explain the discrepancy between the two mileages, but it makes me curious-- was this a euro or Canadian delivery car? Does it have proper US paperwork?

VW build quality in the States is not as good as VW build quality in Europe. My sister had a VW Beetle (same mechanicals as the base golf) a while back, which was constructed in Mexico. There's a fundamental difference in the mentality of the factory workers and attention to detail with quality control that you get from the German factories in Europe that is not reproduced elsewhere in the world. German brands are generally expensive to repair and run... my parents have been through multiple Mecedes, multiple BMWs, multiple Porsches, I've had two SmartCars, and have had a MINI. They are all nice cars in their way, but have all incurred significant cost at some point over the years.

Generally speaking, I would either buy American or Japanese over there Gregg. Such brands have US-based factories and supply lines, so the cars are cheaper and your repair parts will cost less. When I get over there I'll be looking at Ford, Chevrolet, Subaru, etc... to find something reliable.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Sorry to burst your bubble Andrew but GM builds more cars OUTSIDE the US borders than inside the US borders.

+1.. those Mexican bugs shed parts like a Space Shuttle on re-entry

Val loves her Turbo S, but at this point it needs full paint and a bunch of specific interior trim parts, not cheap!!

    Like everything else, of course!

We're even wasting our time responding to this thread. No doubt, the VW thing was but a thought that entered his head, hovered in there just long enough for him to begin posting about it, and then fluttered away in an instant.

I think Gregg's probably several steps ahead of the rest of us. By the time he hits the "Submit Reply" button to post a new thread, he has already given up on doing whatever it is in the thread, as well as two or three other ideas that we've yet to even hear about.
