458, Speciale, 488. Sorry boys at that level of automobile it's more about who's behind the wheel then the car. I will put my money on an average professional driver in a 430 (not Scud but regular plain old 430) over any of you non-professionals in your choice of any of these three cars. 10 laps any track. Not only will they beat you handily but hey will probably lap you.

Looks are subjective. Sound is subjective. Speed is quantifiable. What the 488 will do is make all the non pro drivers better at their relative amateur level

Who cares? The fundamental difference between a Speciale/488 is far less than the difference between a Speciale/650S/GT3/Huracan/Whatever which get compared repeadedly and which people are always interested in. Fundamentals are of little significance in the scope of exotics.

The question stands: If you have $300K for a mid-engine exotic, what do you do? Do you test both the Speciale and 488 to figure out which you like more, or do you just buy the 488 without even considering the Speciale because it's supposedly not in the same niche/class?

Not a 'given' at all. That supposes that every 458 is a prospective Speciale owner. They're not. For many the Speciale is not the kind of car they want. For those that it is, the 'rodded 488 will be along in due curse.

Yah I agree, although I really like Evo.

Same deal with the Scuderia vs 458. CS vs F430.

I did like the comparison to the F40 though. Helps people understand how far turbo charging has come.

    Some things to consider.

I bet virtually all owners of the Speciale also own another luxury car. Most of them own multiple Ferrari's.

My sales person at Ferrari of SF told me that many of his customers had Scuderias for the track and 458s for their dailies...at least prior to the release of the Speciale.

I suppose one needs to ask, have Ferrari's become too user friendly and too practical. Crazy question but perhaps merits some discussion.

Have they become overly refined at everyday speeds.

How many customers actually use a 458 as a daily driver? Would be interesting to see the data on that.

    I think it's the same niche/class :
after having owned a 458 Italia for over 3 years and before ordering a Speciale in April, I saw 488 GTB in Geneva (March 2015) and the choice between Speciale and 488 GTB was raised.

You can use a Speciale as you can use a 458 Italia or 488 GTB : easy to drive, Speciale is just more exciting, addictive and efficient than Italia !

Exactly. The Speciale isn't some hardcore stripped out race car like some people make it out to be. It's a normal street car just like the italia/488 but without carpets. It's the 458 in its final (and best) form.

The divider piece on the side vent is a good place to rest your drink while you admire your car.

No one really uses the power these cars have, people just want the "best." It's the same with other cars, especially AMG. I drank the cool-aid and bought a CLS 63, I never could use the power over the standard car legally.

I for one will keep my 458, because it's still a fun car to drive and sounds great. I don't really feel the need to spend another $ 100,000 to get the 488. If I move up, it will be for the 488 replacement, which should really be a step up, a la 430 to 458. I'm guessing hybrid like "The Ferrari."

V-8's will remain Turbo - V-12's will be hybrid.
But smart move to skip a generation

I agree with you on everything except for using the power. I happen to use all of the horsepower - multiple times - whenever I drive it. There are still true drivers out there.

I agree - you can use the power if you are careful. But actually driving the car on the limit on public streets is pretty darn hard - without being an asshat and putting people in danger - yourself included. Many people don't know what that really means either and don't have the proper instruction or experience. But a little powerslide here or there can be fun if you have the skills and the proper kind of roads/visibility/etc.

What 488 configuration is going to be the most valuable?
How about the "mini LaF" configuration?

Something like rosso corsa, black roof, black dash and cuoio seats
scuderia shields, rosso calipers and every carbon option

    thoughts?

Hard to tell at this point. You'll always have the group that thinks any Ferrari needs to be Rosso Corsa with black or tan interior.

The new metallic trilayer Rosso Corsa will most like be quite popular, as is the usual case with with debut colours. Generally speaking, it seems that a lot of people think it looks best in a metallic colour. In other words, the popular colours will most likely stay the same as with the 458.

As for the two tone being a very popular and valuable combo, i seriously doubt that. Looks like too many shy away from the two tone cars. The fact that this colour was seen on the LaF, won't matter much in my humble opinion. I think RC with Nero roof, will hurt resale, unless you find that unique buyer who wants nothing else. I for one do not care for it, that being on the LaF or on a 488. I personally think Rubino Met., Rosso California or Rosso Fiorano will suit it very well.
